Guest guest
The iron lab values stink. With a ferritin of 12 I was really almost in a stupor, yet since normal started at 10 I was... " OK " ...right? Never mind we have to get it up above 50 for any chance of good thyroid function. Low ferritin is one of the causes of RT3. http://thyroid-rt3.com/whatare1.htm There is such a thing as too much iron, but then we're talking ferritins over two or three HUNDRED: " Serum ferritin levels elevated higher than 200 mcg/L in premenopausal women and 300 mcg/L in men " from http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/177216-diagnosis I always try to get my ferritin up nearer the top of the range, maybe 150, because it will always start dropping immediately, and that way as it drifts down over time...120...90...60...I have a " window of opportunity " where I have a chance of getting thyroid to work, and before I need another IV. > > > > After reading something about iron toxicity that scared me, I found this reassuring article about iron needs and sources. Guest guest
My ferritin is at 120 which your posts indicate as good. But Val and others say we should see it between 60--90. So, is 120 too high? > > > > > > After reading something about iron toxicity that scared me, I found this reassuring article about iron needs and sources. Guest guest
A ferritin of 120 is not too high. I think creates a useful safety margin between you and low ferritin. A ferritin of over 200 is reason for concern and needs to be investigated further. http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/177216-diagnosis > > > > > > > > After reading something about iron toxicity that scared me, I found this reassuring article about iron needs and sources. Guest guest
Hi Margery or anyone else who uses IV Iron, Am curious about how you feel after an Iron IV - do you get any side effects, how long does it take for you to notice the good impact? Do you keep supplementing iron orally as a continual thing and if so at what doses? Guest guest
I had my first Iron IV Infusion (Venofer Iron) on Monday and it took 1 hour total including the waiting around for the nurse that was called away. I noticed nothing other than typical IV pain and felt the same after. I don't feel any changes yet BUT they said it takes a few weeks. You do not take oral Iron according to the nurse. GOOD LUCK! Guest guest
Hi Gail: How I feel after an iron IV depends on how low my iron was beforehand. If I was really low (like a ferritin of 12), I feel much better (a lot more more stamina, less fatigue, less depression) in less than an hour after the IV. If my ferritin was already around 40 or 50, there is still improvement but it is not quite as dramatic. The iron I get is Venofer, I understand that is the one with the least risk of side effects. I've never had any bad side effects at all. The bottle lists dizziness as a possible side effect, but I've never had any. To minimize the possibility of dizziness, in people with low blood pressure, the IV is supposed to be run much more slowly (when my BP was low, the IVs took an hour; now that it is normal they take 1/2 hour). This is certainly a caution worth taking, but I've never had any dizziness at all, regardless of BP or IV time. I do keep taking oral iron, at the same doses. Venofer is expensive, and I figure the more I can raise iron by taking pills the less Venofer I'll have to pay for. Here are some links of people's experiences with iron IVs, that were posted on this group. Hope this helps. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/message/35433 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/message/35464 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/message/32581 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/message/34651 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/message/38082 http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RT3_T3/message/37960 > > > > > > > > > > > > After reading something about iron toxicity that scared me, I > found this reassuring article about iron needs and sources.
