Guest guest
My son was diagnosed with failure to thrive at about 2 weeks old. He was admitted into the hospital where there were social workers that would come in to see how mother and baby were bonding. They then suggested that we weren't feeding him right making me feel very inadequate as a mother when I had tried everything I could think of plus what they had suggested. This went on for about a week and a half when finally a new nurse had been assigned to the pediatric floor and decided to give him one of his feedings out at the nurses station so I could go get something to eat. Mind you every nurse that had been on that floor had tried to feed him thinking it was my fault. This new nurse started feeding him and knew right away what was wrong with him. Everything that he drank could not empty from the stomach because the muscle at the bottom of the stomach was closed too tight.( Pyloric Stenosis) She called the doctor and told him what she thought my matthew had and the doctor ordered a stomach x-ray. By the time I had gotten back to the hospital they were getting him ready for the test. The x-ray confirmed that the nurse was right. I truly believe that if that nurse had not been transferred to that floor they would have never found what it was and Matt would not be here today. That was 11 years ago so I don't know if the thinking has changed any in the medical profession or not. But my experience with this was awful and I never ever got an apology from anyone up there. I know I didn't help you much but I thought I would share my experience with this to show they can diagnose this and there can be a physical reason for it not caused by anything the mother is doing or not doing. Guest guest
Hi Nikki, OK, you got my blood pressure up pretty good. I can't say what I am really thinking. I think they put people in jail for that. I don't have any specific info on failure to thrive except for RSS. The only thing I could suggest is if you could get in touch with your friend's friend and maybe descibe your child and how RSS is often consideredd FTT. Then maybe suggest a second opinion with your doctor. I hope others can give you more guidance that I can. Her ped. is an evil woman from hell, and told her it's her fault that her child is not growing. Has made threats to take her child out of daycare if she cannot get him to meet the goals she has set for the child. The term failure to thrive has been described to me by her as a vicous (?sp) cycle- the mother and child cannot bond so that the child cannot thrive due to the lack of bond between the two. Also, they have not even tried to send him to a geneticist or endo. to figure out if there could be something else underneath it all. I was so mad when I was told this, tried to explain that we do not live in the stone ages, and am waiting for this mother to contact me so that i can get some more information on her child and try to get my ped. to see her. My ped is a saint, and I know will do everything to see that the child is properly diagnosed. Has anyone else heard of this description for failure to thrive, or does someone have a real medical term for this. Getting frustrated with narrow minded docs. Sorry for the vent, hope you can help.
