Charissa has had problems with constant ear infections and sinus

infection (she also has always had lots of ear wax that gets impacted

instead of coming out by itself). She had 5 sets of ear tubes (in a little

over 6 years) and then 3 surgeries to repair a hole left in one eardrum

by the last set of tubes. (It took 3 times to get is to close as it was

in a tricky place to patch). Her ear infection problem was the result of

her eustacian tubes being too short & not at an adequate angle to drain

well, her dad has the same " plumbing " . (I think the eustacian tube

problem is what was trying to remember :) Charissa started

getting more sinus infections than ear infections when she was

around 7 or 8, and her last sinus infection was about a year an a half ago.

Charissa also had surgery on her soft palate. She didn't have a true

cleft (split), but a " sub-mucosal cleft " , meaning the muscles in her

palate weren't arranged properly. They split her soft palate from back

to front, re-arranged the muscles, and put her back together. The

palate was also too short, so they did a " pherengeal flap " proceedure - a

U-shaped flap was cut in the back of the throat behind the palate, the

bottom of the U was pulled forward & attached to the palate, which pulls

the palate back a bit (because her palate was too short). All of this was done

at the same surgery when Charissa was 9 years old. She had less frequent

sinus infections after the surgery, but still several a year.

I hope this info. is helpful....
