Guest guest
I almost feel bad posting this here because so many of you are going through so much and my issue is (tentatively) on the positive side so I hope it's ok... After 3 diagnoses in 3 weeks, my mother recently had a lumpectomy and it turned out to be a adenomyoepithelioma instead of the ductal carcinoma that they originally told her she had. Naturally we're incredibly relieved, but I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this or a similar diagnosis? It is a tumor similar to adenosis or an atypical sclerosing lesion, and apparently it's rare so I can't find much literature on it. Is it unusual for something like this to be mistaken for cancer? It was removed with clean margins, but what we don't know is whether, like other hyperplasic (but essentially benign, for now, thank god) conditions, it increases her risk of developing breast cancer in the future, or what preventative measures need to be taken now. My mom has some exisiting risk factors-- she's 63 years old and didn't have a child until she was 38, and we also have another family member (my cousin, so not immediate though) currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Do I need to be encouraging her to do more than simply keep up with yearly mammograms? Has anyone with a similar pathology experienced subsequent related problems, cancerous or otherwise? Any insights at all would be very appreciated. My best to you all.
