Guest guest
, My son had been seeing the OT for a year and she recommended he get a vision exam. She said she had been noticing the way he looked at things and averted his eyes at certain times, made her think he may have some vision issues as well. It is common for kids on the spectrum to have some vision issues. Also, he reached the point where he was communicating and interacting on a higher level than when he was four (he's 5 now), and that would make him able to participate in vision therapy if it was necessary. They need to be able to understand and follow directions to do the activities. Each session lasts 50 minutes. The vision exam revealed he has significant delay in his eye development (as far as their working together), although his vision is near perfect. He has a problem with " fusion " which results in his having some double vision. I had a second opinion confirm this. Some of his symptoms are: looks at objects, lines, in a weird way sometimes. constantly trips and bumps into doorways, furniture, people, you name it... still has considerable trouble with stairs even after 1 1/2 yrs of OT. sometimes he closes one eye or squints when he is looking at something. There are other things too, like certain activities. For example blowing bubbles - he never gets the ring in front of his mouth. He always places it to the side of his mouth when blowing. Now I realize that it is probably that he sees two rings and is blowing into the wrong one! He has a terrible time writing or coloring. His letters overlap and are all over the page, and he cannot stay in the lines for coloring. There are probably a lot of things contributing to that though, not just the vision. I am glad to be able to work on his vision now, before school really begins for him. One more piece to the puzzle. Charlene
