Guest guest
Hi Stacey, I can completely relate to your anxiety about the findings but please know that a “hot spot” is usually NOT cancer. I am hypo with enlarged thyroid and was sent for the sono and uptake scan and there was a spot on mine as well and I totally freaked... I think some of us just “freak” more than others... Not sure on that. In any case here is just one site of many that may help you feel more at ease although I know nothing can beat Hearing the words from your doc. When I went into my appt after the scans and sono I was so nervous the doc Was almost afraid to touch me, so I really do know what it can be like to be that fearful... Keep us posted, I will send good vibes your way. Sue http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/ency/thyroid_nuclear_medicine_scan.jsp Hello everyone, Ive been lurking here for the past week.Let me tell you about my situation... I blood test said I was hyperactive so I went for another blood test and an ultrasound of my thyroid. They found a single nodule and I of course freaked even though I hear nodules are very common. I was diagnosed with Graves disease from the bloodwork and I have some eye involvement. This has all transpired in the past month so forgive me because I am more than overwhelmed. I went this past Mon and Tues for an rai uptake scan and will get the results from my Dr tomorrow. The physisist that I was talking to and was in there said my uptake was high and probably a hot nodule..but I wondered wouldnt the Graves make it high too? Im just really scared because I know I have Graves and I dont think nodules cause Graves so now Im panicking that I have cancer. My anxiety is getting bad last night and today although I felt great before that.Im on only beta blockers for now and they really seemed to help.I guess Im more nervous because my appt is tomorrow. Does anyone here know or have any experience or knowledge about when one has Graves and a nodule? Thanks so much, Stacey
Guest guest
Hi Sue, Im not sure what you mean hotspots? They found a single nodule during my thyroid ultrasound so he sent me for an rai uptake scan. When they measured my uptake the first time the lines went really high,I was talking to the phsisist there about something and he commented that because it was so high the nodule was probably hot. Thats all I know...I know id rather it be hot because hod nodules are alost never cancerous but I wondered if the fact that I have graves would make the uptake go high as well? Guest guest
Hi Stacey, I was told my Hashis affected my scan and can make it go haywire. In fact they did two sonos after my scan and could find no correlating Nodule or mass for that “spot” on my scan, so as far as my endo told me, The scan was affected by my hashis. sue I am not sure about graves, here a little info on that: http://www.answers.com/topic/thyroid-nuclear-medicine-scan Abnormal results An area of increased radionuclide uptake may be called a hot nodule or " hot spot. " This means that a benign growth is overactive. Despite the name, hot nodules are unlikely to be caused by cancer. Increased radionuclide uptake is indicative of hyperthyroidism and may suggest Graves' disease or an active pituitary adenoma. An area of decreased radionuclide uptake may be called a cold nodule, or " cold spot. " This indicates that this area of the thyroid gland is underactive. A variety of conditions, including cysts, hypothyroidism, nonfunctioning benign growths, localized inflammation, or cancer, may produce a cold spot. Single nodules that are not functioning are malignant in about 10-20% of cases. Completely nonfunctioning nodules have a higher probability of being malignant than those that have some degree of function. A thyroid nuclear medicine scan is rarely sufficient to establish a clear diagnosis. A majority of nonfunctioning nodules are not malignant, but their presence increases the probability of a malignancy. Nodules that are functioning are rarely malignant. Frequently, the information revealed will need to be combined with data from other studies to determine the problem.
