About grinding bones...Lehmans in Kidron, Ohio is a

supplier of non-electric goods, mostly for the Amish.

They have a great catalog, filled with all kinds of

old fashioned and interesting farm and food-production

items. They have a few pages of different grain mills.

One of the descriptions specifically says that it's

good for grinding bones. I assumed this was something

people did to use as a soil amendment--and why not? If

you're using every part of the animal, it would make

great free fertilizer. I never thought of humans

ingesting the meal. So I'd say, grind 'em up in a

grain mill. I think Lehmans even has a website now if

you want to check out the model they have.

***Lierre,

Thanks for the tip. I just checked it out - it's $340! For that price I

could get a very powerful meat grinder that people report does a good job on

lamb and turkey bones as well as chicken. I have a $100 grinder now that

does chicken bones with no problems. Also the Lehman grinder grinds very

coarse, according to the web site. My thinking is that the same result can

be achieved with the grinder I have (the Maverick) for one third the price,

with the possible exception that the Lehman one might be able to handle

harder bones, such as lamb, turkey, etc. Which is actually something that

interests me, as I'd like to not *have to* rely on chicken bones as the bone

source for my lap dogs :)
