Guest guest
Bill, I have to partially disagree with the engineer. It may be that I should update my software but that would not resolve the problem that we are currently dealing with. Eudora 2.2 and Eudora Lite will read html and do a number of other nice things. It will read any message you send directly to me no matter which of the standard protocols you may use. The problem is in the way Yahoo is summarizing the digests. The same messages that are readable when they are sent directly to me cannot be read by anyone when they are summarized by Yahoo for the digest. This goes beyond the fact that the digests don't pass on attachments and images. One reason I don't currently upgrade is that I'm using an old 486 for my mail server. That machine is running Windows 3.1. The new free version of Eudora, which I use at work, only runs on machines that use Windows 95 or above. It's an excellent mail program though it is quite slow when running on older Pentiums with little memory. One advantage of using this set up at home (besides the fact that I'm cheap)is that no one anymore is writing e-mail viruses for these machines and programs. I'm somewhat puzzled why Yahoo is not working to resolve the problem with Netscape. It probably has something to do with Yahoo not wanting to cooperate with AOL and its Netscape product. The image was a small cartoon boy up a tree with a bear chasing him, but the Yahoo digest does not pass on attachments and treats imbedded images as attachments. I get the CBGD postings as a digest and it always fouls them up also. I looked carefully at the full headers on a bunch of messages and found that Netscape 6.01 does use some sort of new protocol. HOWEVER - You and Jim need to update your software - Jim is using Windows Eudora Pro Version 2.2 (16) and you are using a slightly newer version - QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.6 (32) with Spelling Checker - Charmayne helped me here by sending me a note to get and use Eudora and she is using version 5. something so Jim is using 3 versions back and you are at least 2 versions back. Charmayne mentioned that Eudora is free also, so update as about 18 months ago MS made some changes to allow better html in email. To all - UPDATING software is important - computers before the Pentium series used 16 bit microprocessors but the Pentium's use 32 bit processors. If the software you are using is 16 bit - the microprocessor has to continuously convert everything which takes up RAM and if you run out of RAM your computer locks up (crashes). While everyone is using different brands and versions of software - no one here is using CPM-85 anymore which was 8 bit software and I'm sure that Yahoo just did not write it's programs to handle old versions of software. With Pentium IV's out on the market your old 486 software will not work much longer. Game software written in the days of 8 bit computers is still floating around - you see it as freeware or shareware - if you use it and run NOTHING else on your computer at the same time - it will probably run - but put another program on the task bar or open another window and boom your computer will crash. Be careful about the software you buy now - look for 32 bit versions - but beware - they are talking 64 bit computers ) You can get Eudora 5.1 free at http://www.eudora.com/ Take care, Bill and Charlotte =============================================== ******************************** *** Peg & Jim *** # 29 Cruz Heights *** Ipan-Talofofo, Guam 96930-4736 *** USA *** *** Note: Guam is 15 hours ahead of *** Eastern Standard Time (EST). *** 14 ahead of EDT. ********************************
