Guest guest
Hi everyone, I've been a member here for a few years now, and have greatly enjoyed your constant company. Coming up soon I get to pick a dissertation topic in Sociology, and I've come to value how much knowledge we collectively have. So rather than choosing a topic the way most of my peers do (read a book, redo a study, but modified), I was thinking maybe I could ask all of you for your collective wisdom. If there was something I could research for us, as a group, what should it be? What issues bother you the most? What do you want other people to know? What would be meaningful or useful? In other words, how can I use this research project I have to do on my way to a PhD in Sociology in service of our group? It's ok if this is a bad idea or no one really sees potential here, but I wanted to start a conversation by asking. If you had me as your researcher, what would you want me to find out? Guest guest
You're doing a PhD in Sociology? Good for you!!! Maybe research into the dearth of adequate psychological services for the treatment of BPD (such as counselors et al trained in DBT methods)? Or the effect of personality disorders in the workplace, how that affects productivity? Or how often BPD is actually used as grounds for the termination of parental rights in child abuse cases that make it to the courts? And why and how in some cases the BPD is given a pass to possibly abuse again? > > Hi everyone, > > I've been a member here for a few years now, and have greatly enjoyed your constant company. > > Coming up soon I get to pick a dissertation topic in Sociology, and I've come to value how much knowledge we collectively have. Guest guest
Ooooo! I have been trying to find statistics regarding how many child injuries and child deaths per year (worldwide, or anywhere, really) are due to parents who have a Cluster B personality disorder (specifically) or psychopathy, or any mental illness. The statistics I've located so far include things like the perpetrator's location, sex, age, and socioeconomic status, but the info on their psychiatric condition (if any) doesn't seem to be included. I'm beginning to wonder if this particular piece of information RE statistics-keeping is considered to be " politically incorrect " or something? Are there lobby groups who feel that keeping statistics on child abuse/child death when its perpetrated by mentally ill parents is somehow showing prejudice against the mentally ill? I thought the DSM, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual would keep stats like that? If so, they're not available to me. I think that if it can be shown statistically that children are at high risk for neglect, for emotional and physical injury and abuse, sexual abuse, and even death from Cluster B parents that there will be more public awareness that children need to be rescued or at least closely monitored and given therapy/emotional support if one or both their parents exhibit the traits and behaviors of Cluster B disorders, or psychopathy, or other mental illnesses. So-- statistics on child abuse/death perpetrated by mentally ill parents, please. Thanks! -Annie > > Hi everyone, > > I've been a member here for a few years now, and have greatly enjoyed your constant company. > > Coming up soon I get to pick a dissertation topic in Sociology, and I've come to value how much knowledge we collectively have. Guest guest
Yes,Annie, that's a great idea! There is no central data base kept on these kinds of statistics but one is greatly needed and perhaps a published dissertation could help prompt to action. > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > I've been a member here for a few years now, and have greatly enjoyed your constant company. > > > > Coming up soon I get to pick a dissertation topic in Sociology, and I've come to value how much knowledge we collectively have. Guest guest
Having a brother who died by suicide from the severe depression he suffered which I feel is directly related to having been raised by a bpd parent (whew), I would love to know statistics on the rate and severity of depression among children raised by a bpd parent. I think it would be interesting to split out the statistics of those with formerly diagnosed bpd parents and those who feel their parents definitely have bpd but are undiagnosed. I think this would give light to the affects of the poor diagnosis, treatment and education our mental health system has in regards to bpd. I day dream about coming up with a study and research break-through in this area so that no other ko has to loose a sibling to this horrible scenario again. Good for you! I would be happy to provide you with anything you need for your research. patinage
Guest guest
So here are the possible projects I'm hearing so far: 1. Statistics regarding child abuse by mental illness (particularly cluster (to show that Kos are at a high risk for neglect, emotional and physical injury/abuse or death so Kos can get more support/treatment etc). 2. Lack of adequate counselors/ care for BPD 3. How pds affect work place productivity 4. BPD and the courts: loss of parental rights and/or allowance to further abuse the KO 5. Statistics on the rate of severity of depression among children raised by a BPD parent (and how this shows the effects of poor diagnosis, treatment & education in mental health system towards BPD) Does anyone else want to add anything (or correct me if my summary doesn't really reflect what you meant)? -Sandy
