Guest guest
Following is an update on this project. I sent it to people who contacted me. If you are interested, there is still plenty of time to get involved. Hello: Recently you contacted me about doing a memoir project. Thank you for writing. I am glad to hear from you. When I first sent out the announcement, I was planning on doing a booklet full of stories. I have changed my mind. I will be collecting stories and essays to put them on my new web site. I am redoing my sites right now; it will be ready by the end of the year or before. This will give people plenty of time to write, and give people an audience to write for. About 25-30K visit my website a month. This is very doable, unlike a printed book, and the essays don't have to be perfect. Right now I am not ready to start the group. I am putting together some instructions and guidelines. But for now, if you are interested, please join the group by sending a blank email to this address: Subscribe-WTOPEP . Once you sign up, you will choose whether you want to have individual emails or a digest. PEP stands for personal essay project. I have the list set up right now so I need to approve all new members and all posts. That is for your privacy and protection. Right now, I will be using the group to keep a list of people who are interested and communicate with them all at once. In the next several weeks, I will be putting together some files for you to read and instructions about writing and critiquing it. So please be patient. There will also be guidelines that people must follow to be in the group. These will be similar to the WTO guidelines. People must act professional to be in the group: I will make be a safe, supportive environment. For now, I invite you to purchase a copy of an essential book that will show you in detail how to put together your memoir or personal essay. I have read it and it is a very good book. I can't underestimate the importance of getting this book and reading it carefully before you start working. You will save yourself a great deal of time and effort. It is by Adair Lara and it is called " Naked, Drunk, and Writing: Shed Your Inhibitions and Craft a Compelling Memoir or Personal Essay. " I will be using the guidelines in there when critiquing your work. The Amazon link is http://www.amazon.com/Naked-Drunk-Writing-Adair-Lara/dp/0578012456. (By the way, in one of the chapters it says not to include discussions with a therapist. That will not apply here: talking with a therapist might be an essential part of your essay.) Right now Amazon says it is out of stock, but they will get more soon. You can buy the ebook or only $11.99 and read it right on your computer even if you don't t have an ebook device. I will be making a file of one or two chapters in the book, but you really need the whole book if you are serious about writing something. A book you MAY wish to buy is " The Power of Memoir: How to Write Your Healing Story " by Joy Myers. " Here is the link on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Power-Memoir-Write-Healing-Story/dp/0470508361/ref=pd_ sim_b_5 Please pay particular attention to Step 5: The Dark Stuff. While " Naked Drunk and Writing " is about the craft of writing, the Meyers book is about empowering yourself to write and gaining the courage to tell your story as you see it. However, be aware that WTOPEP is not a therapy or support group: please get support on your WTO/BPDFamily message board. If you have any questions, please write me. However, I don't have a lot of answers right now since I am just putting the group together. If you have some thoughts about what you would like to see, please let me know. Thank you for your interest in this project!
