Guest guest
Wondering if other KOs constantly second guess themselves like I do. Sigh... I had to sit out of school for 4 months due to having surgery. I had a GREAT group of people that were with me then. We had no drama, all got along great, etc. Now I'm with a new group of people and oh dear god... we have some drama-mamas in my class. Today, our instructor was out sick. Because it's a one class a month thing, when this happens (which is rare), the head of the nursing program will come in and give us projects (busy work) to do. BUT, it's still a way for us to use the time to LEARN what we're supposed to cover in class that day. No, it's not particularly fun, but hey... we're all adults, right? right? There's been all kinds of crazy drama in class & clinical this month with some of these girls. Today, two of them got up and left when the head of the program stepped out, after she told us that another administrator/instructor would be in to lecture shortly. Well, that instructor had also been in & out of the room and noticed that the drama mamas had left. They were bitching & moaning " Hey, we're all adults here, right? We can leave if we want to! " . Yes, they're right. But because of their decision, they put some of us in an uncomfortable position and they will be marked absent for the day, which I know is going to tick one of them off because she goes on & on about her " perfect attendance " . Anyway, the uncomfortable position was when this other instructor asked us who they were! We had to rat out our classmates. Thanks, ladies. Thanks a lot. Because now I know they're just going to be livid pissed and bring more drama. In clinical yesterday, one of them was about an hour late. I was doing med pass with my clinical instructor, and she comes up to us and starts telling her how she got pulled over & blah blah blah but got off with a warning. Later that day, just as we were getitng ready to wrap up, she tells me and a couple other students how she LIED about it and didn't even wake up until 7:12 am (we have to be there at 6:45 am). She was bragging about it! " I so totally pulled one over on <instructor> " . Really? That's SO GROWN UP of you, " adult " . Oh that just bothers me so much, but I decided to keep my mouth shut because I have to put up with these broads for 8 more months. And it causes a moral dilemma for me as well... if she can so easily whip up some lie to manipulate the instructor, is she lying on her paperwork/charting regarding her patient care? Something says she might be doing that... considering that usually the instructor is busy with someone doing med pass and those two can almost always be found sitting on their asses at the nurses station, B.S'ing. Yes, we all have to do some work at the nurse's station to do our notes & things, but I'm BUSY! I am with my patient, or helping others who need it. But it never fails, any time I need to find a fellow student, I can find those two at the nurse's station just yapping. And do you think I want to ask either of them for help? Oy. OMG, I could go on & on and I've only been back to school 3 weeks. It's ridiculous! But of course after today with being asked by the other instructor for their names (Myself & 2 other students) I'm expecting the worse from these bullies. Yes, I do put them in the bully category as well because they will make fun of other students for asking questions. Grrrraaarrrr! So I'm second guessing myself now. I had to stop & think of the one girl's name because I'm new to this group of people. Then another girl remembered it. This was right before lunch and of course then just about the rest of the class was bitching about her asking other students to name names. Come on! No it was not a great situation, but on the other hand I was asked and I am not going to lie to my instructors or anyone else for that matter. Geezus. The school was trying to find an alternative way to educate us. We're all paying for that education, after all. Just shut up & do the work, it was really not a big deal at all! " Oh no, we have to self study & *gasp* do homework?! " (Most instructors do NOT assign homework, grades come from tests & quizzes, papers, etc... but not really homework. But I still study my ass off). You know, none of us are perfect. We ALL make mistakes, and when I do I try my best to learn from them. One of my motto's for life is, " If you mess up, fess up " . And given what I've had to listen to & witness this month, they are so not like that. They were running their mouths again after the instructor pointed out some errors in their nursing notes. We all had errors, some more than others. But there goes drama mama #1 " My notes were PERFECT. She just HAD to find something to mark wrong on them. " Guess what, kiddo? They weren't. Because we were all waiting to have our notes checked, and some of us were listening to her correct YOUR papers to pick up tips & pointers. Sheesh. Sorry, this is long, rambly & VERY much a rant, but I am ready to scream. They are very intrusive to the learning process, especially in lecture with their snide little remarks & swearing. NOT professional at all. I sure as hell wouldn't want them to be my nurse or the nurse of someone I love. Mia the frustrated 2nd guesser. Guest guest
Yes, I second guess myself constantly. My T would tell me to say " Look drama mama, shut up and do the work. " I would. It will feel good. And the drama mama will have more respect for you after. Hugs > > > Wondering if other KOs constantly second guess themselves like I do. > > Sigh... Guest guest
Wow, I am amazed that these students you describe who are so disrespectful that they just bail out of class, who are blatantly uncooperative, who are not doing their assignments properly, who talk during class, and complain and whine when caught cheating or doing a sub-standard job on their assignments... why aren't these jerks just tossed out of the program altogether? Why are they allowed to remain in the program if they behave like that, show up late, and don't do the assigned work satisfactorily? I don't get it! I'm amazed because I was in an employee chorus for a few years (back when I worked for a large, very high profile corporation). The chorus was part of a big annual Christmas show at a large theme park, a very lavish production, etc. So, we're talking a semi-pro level of performance... but nothing like as serious and professional as a nursing program. And yet for this amateur, volunteer employee chorus the Rule was that if you missed TWO rehearsals you were out of the chorus. Period, end of sentence. Turn in your robe and collar, you were history. If you were over 10 minutes late for rehearsal, you were counted " absent. " How is it that a professional nursing school allows such childish, unprofessional, bratty behavior from their students, is what I'd like to know. Jeez, Louise! That's awful! -Annie > > Wondering if other KOs constantly second guess themselves like I do. > > Sigh... I had to sit out of school for 4 months due to having surgery. Guest guest
I don't understand why you have to tell on the absentee student to the (absentee?) stand-in lecturer? Surely the lecturers are responsible for roll call? I think it is a boundary crossing issue for your instructor to be asking you to name names - why aren't the instructors there to see for themselves what their students are doing? It is unfair to unload that responsibility onto the other students... When I have a class of students I feel that I am responsible to assess their attendence, punctuality, coursework, and attitude, not the other students...? Have I missed something here?!!LOL! Guest guest
Yes, we all second guess ourselves. When the IT asked your class the names of the little girls, not women, who left, you were not snitching to name them. Look, they were aware that someone left in a hissy of drama. So, had you not said it was Betty and , what I would have done, had I been teaching your class, is simply get a roll book and ask each of you who YOU are. 2 will be missing. Those 2 are the drama queens. As you pointed out, if they will lie about this, what integrity do they have in regard to pt care and meds? I don t want someone like that caring for me, or my wife or children. But you know, come test time, they will suddenly find out that OMG this is hard and you DO have to be in class and do the work. If you were on the job with one of them, and saw them inject Demoral into their arm, or pocket a pill intended for a pt, would you report that? I hope you plan to be the kind of nurse who would have the integrity to do so. These spoiled little bitches have no business being nurses. If they are called on their behavior and straigthen their butts up, then maybe. But I predict a fine future in the fast food industry for them. If they do come back and subject you to abusive behavior, report that as well. Why do you think the instructors wanted to know who copped an attitude and walked the class? I can promise you that they are on thin ice, if your Nurse Educators are worth thier salt. As to the thing of not doing homework or self study, don t let them kid you, kid. If they are NOT spending time working out thier nursing plans, and studying hard as hell for Chem, Pharm, and some of the back breaking courses, they are not going to be nurses. Nor should they. If they can t take criticism or correction, and learn from their mistakes in class, where they can t kill anyone, they have no business being nurses. You just keep doing what you are doing. Some day you ll be the charge nurse, and some of your girls will laugh with you about seeing drama mama at Wal mart marking the price on Bras. Did I mention, my daughter is a nurse? And a good one. Guest guest
Thanks for the replies guys. And yes, Doug, if they were stealing a pt's meds, ABSOLUTELY I would report them. No doubt about that. Same if I witnessed them abusing a PT or some other very clear cut thing, but I start to question myself when it comes to something like lying about why she was late. It's not as clear cut. And since I am not with drama mamas all day, I really have no idea what they're doing at clinical. I do think it is a bit odd that I can ALWAYS find them at the nurses station, but that doesn't mean when I walk away to go back to my unit and do patient care that they're just staying planted there... I suspect they are, but to say for sure that they are isn't exactly fair nor something that should come out of the mouth of a nursing student who believes in evidence based nursing. Right now, it's just yellow & red flags. I do have integrity, and that's partly why I don't feel or know if I should just go running to an administrator about this. It's not med stealing, not abusing a pt, it's not as clear cut and I'm not in elementary school. As for why they're still in the program, I can't say. Like I said, this is a new group of people I'm with since I had to sit out for surgery. Sure miss the drama free hard working bunch I was with before. But I don't know what their behavior has been like up to this point. I can take a good guess that it hasn't been great, you know? And with things at clinical, like I said, an RN can only have 10 students at a clinical. That doesn't sound like much, but trust me having 10 people to keep track of, to help pass meds on, etc etc etc is quit a lot. So no, she can't babysit them all day either. As for the instructor being out sick, it happens. We have to be realistic enough to realize that things happen. Hell, I had to sit out for 4 months to have surgery. Trust me, I was hoping I could wait until i was done with the program to do that. We're going to have our relief call off sick when we are nurses and have to pull double shifts. It happens. One month, my instructor's husband had a pulmonary embolism and missed a couple of classes, so we had the head of the program those days too. Yes, it was a lot of self study, but when our instructor returned & we had to take our test... we all did fabulous. The difference there is that group of people did a lot of self study all ready. The similarity, yeah, none of us really liked what was going on, but we just kept our mouths shut & did the work & made the best of it. You're there anyway, and they were trying to find an alternative way for us to get the education we're paying for... so why not shut up, stick around & do the work. Nurses are supposed to be adaptable, flexible, and ready to improvise. A nurse's work would rarely be the same thing day in & day out. There will be kinks in the chain, so to speak, nearly every day. I wouldn't be surprised if they were on the verge of being kicked from the program. I've seen and heard about lesser things getting people kicked out. But at the same time, when these girls act like angels in front of the instructors it's hard for them to really see what's going on, you know? I also shouldn't be naive enough to think they don't know what's going on, these are smart people. I just don't like being made to feel like I'm in kindergarten again. Not my job to babysit drama mamas. No, it wasn't cool of the step in instructor to ask us their names, but on the other hand, it happened. What was I supposed to do? Just ignore her? No. And I still feel that it's drama mamas' place to realize that they put their peers into an uncomfortable position. Yes, they are " adults " (I use that word loosely) and they made the decision to do what they did, now they have to suffer the consequences of it and realize how it effects other people too. Guest guest
I just looked at my gradebook online... those drama mamas are going to be even more pissed that they left. One of the projects we had to do yesterday in class was a group project, they added it to our grade book. So now they are missing 25 points. Perhaps this will be the end of the drama-mama situation. I still don't know if I should talk to someone about the lie told at clinical on Tuesday. Maybe I'll talk to one of the instructors I had a few months ago that I really trust & respect to get a feel for what she thinks.
