These two have been getting some good reviews at the other Group I belong to, a

support Group for the adult children of narcissistic pd parents (my mother was

formally diagnosed *twice* with bpd, but I believe she also has a co-morbidity

of narcissistic pd, with a smattering of histrionic pd and antisocial pd traits,

PLUS obsessive-compulsive pd traits.)

Beverly Engel's books " Healing Your Emotional Self " and " How To Divorce Your

Parents " .

Has anyone here read either of these, and if so, did they seem good to you?

Hi Annie:

Beverly Engel's " How To Divorce Your Parents " is the book that got the ball

rolling for me. A pal loaned it to me about 8 years ago. Therapists were trying

to lead me down the " forgiveness " path, and that was resulting in night sweats,

terror attacks, crying jags--it was awful. I couldn't understand my own

reactions until I read Beverly's book. Beverly knew the score. she knew my

situation, and that book was a life raft.

I recently tried to buy it and it's out of print and hard to find. However, I

purchased it for used on Amazon.

Is this it? The title is different. Kinda expensive.

Aha! Thanks for the correct title, GS: " Divorcing a Parent: The Healthy Choice

for Many Adult Children " by Beverly Engel.

Funny how some books that seem most relevant to our bpd-parent situation are now

rare, out of print, and/or expensive, like " Understanding The Borderline

Mother " .

I wish these books would be re-issued as new editions, possibly with older

material revised and updated to reflect the most recent studies on mental

disorders.

Or maybe they will become available in one or more of the new electronic

formats, such as e-books.

We can only hope!

Here's a way you can afford reading these books, coming from a

librarian-in-training ;)

http://www.worldcat.org/

and you can see if it's in a library near you. Worst case, interlibrary loan

(ILL) would only knock you back a few dollars at most.

Yes, the link you sent is correct. I got a softcover edition, used, for $30.

It's a real shame that the book is so expensive because it's out of print. It

might be worth emailing Beverly and telling her there's still a demand for the

book. Wouldn't it be great if she could release an e-version!
