Nada's Facebook Account

I made the huge mistake of setting nada up with a Facebook account so she could

keep up on our family's lives and we could cut down on phone calls. She added a

bunch of high school friends and started posting scriptures and odd messages

(e.g., how men should treat their wives, etc.). One of her HS friends e-mailed

me awhile ago to let me know that nada's behavior was concerning. Apparently

nada was contacting her former boyfriend's family and harassing one of them over

facebook to the point that he considered reporting her to Facebook. He actually

ended up getting off Facebook. For awhile she thought that the government and

mafia was watching her through Facebook. She would remove all of her pictures

and request that the account be closed so that no one could hurt her or our

family. She was really stressed that it takes 14 days to remove a Facebook

account but then she was also obsessed with the guy she was harassing so she'd

end up logging back on and re-opening the account before it was even closed.

She changed her mind about the Facebook account multiple times a day over the

course of a month or more. Meanwhile, my siblings and I were embarrassed about

her quotes. Thank goodness for her commitment to God. She gave up Facebook for

Lent and has been Facebook free so far as I can tell!

" Gave up facebook for Lent " something about that struck me as hilarious.

Good luck with your mother. :-)

Oh geez - I see elements of psychosis in these behaviors. We need to call in

the big gun (Annie) for diagnosis. I believe she would say your mother has a

co-morbid disorder, and that BPD can at times become psychosis. But ANNIE

help

And yes that is awesome to give up Fbook for Lent. I love that.

(Lol RE me as a " big gun " )

The behaviors I find the most concerning are: (a) your nada harassing someone, a

former boyfriend's relative, via the Internet and (B) her feelings of paranoia

RE " the mafia and the government watching her " via FaceBook.

I hope that your nada will consider seeing a psychologist about these behaviors.

I am not a psychologist, and all I can offer here are my own personal opinions,

but I feel I can say with confidence that such behaviors are not normal.

One of the diagnostic traits of borderline pd is:

#9. Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation, delusions or severe

dissociative symptoms

Only a psychologist or psychiatrist can determine whether your nada's behaviors

are part of her borderline pd, or if there's something else going on as well.

Psychosis must by definition involve true breaks with reality. Paranoia,

delusional thinking and dissociative symptoms *seem* like breaks with reality,

but apparently (if I understand what I've read correctly) it has to do with

frequency and intensity, and one of the defining points of psychosis is that the

patient is having hallucinations that seem real to him or her. True psychosis

means the patient can no longer tell what is real and what isn't.

I hope that you or someone can convince your nada to talk with a psychotherapist

about her negative behaviors before they get her into legal trouble for

harassment, and I hope that she can be convinced to stay off of social

networking sites altogether.

Thanks Annie and GirlscoutCowboy. She doesn't know that we know everything

that we do so it might be hard to talk to her about seeing a psychologist.

Plus her psychologist wasn't very helpful as far as we could tell. She

told us that he said she could come if she wanted to but didn't have to come

if she didn't want to. I think she was lying.

Either way, the information on psychosis is very helpful. I've been

attending the Family to Family class provided by NAMI and they gave us a

Crisis File which has also been very helpful. We're starting to sort

through things slowly but surely as a family. Thanks to everyone for your

support!

Ha!!! I'd describe Annie as a 44 magnum handgun - you only use it if you are

serious. Now who is weirded out that I know my guns? Don't worry, its an

" occupational " hazard of growing up as a little cowboy.

So what is this crisis file like?

Cow GIRL. You aint no BOY!

Doc Holliday favored a 44.

But being as this a a 44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the

world, and it ll blow your head clean off, you got to ask yourself a

question. Do I feel lucky? Well do ya, punk?

So should any ask who would presume to F with Annie. Well punk, do ya

feel lucky?

I guess I say " boy " because my nada tried to make me into one when I was

small. Boy clothes, colors, haircut, you name it. I guess it wasn't

literally a boy, but she tried to erase every bit of feminity. It didn't

work.
