Guest guest
HI , Nice to 'meet' you and Emma. I wonder if life could ever be so simple for us that she just may not have enough of an apetite for the bottle if she is tube fed? Then there is the possibility of reflux or silent reflux creating an aversion to bottle drinking. I'm assuming as she's being followed for this that breathing is not interfering. How much does she rely on her mouth to breath? Was she taking a bottle previously, then stopped? Were her lungs staying clear? Any increased secretions, drooling or spit ups after bottle feeds? Does she prefer sitting up a bit to drink? Does she like her binky? Is there anything with the shape or muscles of her mouth or face that might be contributing? Are the doctors pleased with her weight? Is that enough questions? LOL-laughing out loud. There are lots of Mom's with babies on the list who can comment better. My daughter's a little older than bottle feeds. ;-) Glad you've joined us, in Ma. mom to , 21 yrs old.
Guest guest
Hi , Congratulations on the birth of Emma. Is she your first child? I can't wait to hear more about her! Regarding the bottle, many children with CHARGE have difficulty swallowing, so it is hard work for them to coordinate sucking and swallowing. My daughter (and many others) is fed using a g-tube but there are many as well who have learned to eat orally. Is there a feeding team at your hospital (or a close children's hospital?) - they sometimes have very good ideas for helping with feeding. Guest guest
, She has been seeing the feeding team since she was 18 days old. THey have tried the vital stimulation on her. Her swallow is actually fine now, she just doesn't seem to even want the bottle now. She had in the past. The feeding team is now confused and are currently taking a break from seeing her. She does have a G-Tube and is doing well with it. Just thought I would see if anyone else had any problems that were simular. Do you have anyother children? This is our first and we are concerned that if we have another that that one may have the same thing happen. I would love to have more children I am afraid it will happen again. Thanks for emailing me back. Re: Hi , Congratulations on the birth of Emma. Is she your first child? I can't wait to hear more about her! Guest guest
, I have two older sons, Kennedy was my third. She tested positive for a de novo mutation on CHD7, so that means neither her father or I tested positive for the mutation so we have no increased risk for having another child with CHARGE if we were to have more (but we're finished so it's not relevant for us personally). I would say to seek genetic counselling if and when you do decide to have another child just so you can get all the facts. Sorry I'm not much help with the feeding. Once Kennedy got a couple of aspiration pneumonias, I stopped pushing the oral feeds when she was a baby. She eats some stuff now but it's hard work for her and not enjoyable. She eats yogurt and drinks sips of things but the preponderance of her diet for sure, goes in through the tube. She's very healthy and I feel she will work on learning to swallow more effectively and eat orally when she's ready to and the motivation comes from within her. Good luck and keep posting when you can! www.chargesyndrome.info > > , > She has been seeing the feeding team since she was 18 days old. THey have > tried the vital stimulation on her. Guest guest
Hi Congratulations on the birth of Emma. I can't help you on the feeding but does Emma have Choanal atresia? because this would cause problems with her bottle. Babies are nose breathers for their first 6 months. It maybe that her nasal passageways are not blocked but very narrow (stenosis) and that it is too much effort for her to feed. Likewise do she have a heart problem, this could have an impact. Regarding first children like Kennedy ('s daughter) my daughter (6) has the mutation but she was my first child. I have another and in the UK there are a crowd of us who have first children with CHARGE around the age of 6, 7, 8 with a younger sibling about 2 years younger who are medically unremarkable. Hopefully this gives you some reassurance although I am sure that Meg (Hefner) will comment in due course. Meg is the genetic expert on CHARGE and is on the board on the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation. Guest guest
- My daughter is now nearly 9 years old and is an oral eater who can handle just about anything. But she started out on a Gtube and unable to manage a bottle. She did not have choanal atresia or aspiration issues. She did have an aorta repair as an infant with a few VSDs that eventually resolved on their own. She has a submucous cleft palate and a highly arched palate. The biggest obstacle to her feeding was oral muscle weakness, incoordination, and GE reflux. She never could coordinate the suck-swallow-breath thing and never did manage to drink from a bottle. Her reflux was horrible, but we managed it with medication and positioning (keeping her upright) until she outgrew it by age 1.5 yrs or so. We did intense feeding therapy during her first year. It felt like it went on forever. Felt like " one step forward, 2 steps back " . But it actually went relatively quickly. At 9 months, she could barely drink 10cc's by bottle and barely ate 2 TB of baby food by spoon. I have video of a feeding session at that age. It's remarkable that she went from that to having her Gtube removed at age 1.5 or so. She did better when she was able to drink from a sippy cup. And she slowly managed solid foods better. I guess the moral to the story is to hold onto hope, continue with oral motor and feeding therapy -even when it feels fruitless - and try not to worry too much. I know I agonized. I'm troubled that the feeding team is taking a break from Emma. If it's because she needs a break - that's ok - but if it's because they are giving up - well, that's not ok. There were so many times when I felt like we were getting no where. But obviously, we made progress. It was just so slow sometimes that I didn't see it. We spent the first year or so with the specialized speech therapist at the children's hospital 2 hours away. Finally, I had the confidence to trust our local speech therapist. She was young and new to the field with no experience weaning a child from the Gtube. But together, we got it done. She had her expertise, I had my knowledge of Aubrie and my experience with the specialized speech therapist, and we both had our intuition and common sense. We worked together to figure it out with no real course of action and no " expert " to guide us through. Talking things through with the folks here on the list was a huge help. It was really hard to keep up with the feeding sessions and not let my anxiety and anguish flow over to Aubrie. Of course, each feeding experience needs to be positive. And sometimes I wasn't feeling so positive. But I worked hard at it, kept at it even when I really wanted to just throw in the towel and go cry, and we made it. Now - there are lots of parents here who have also worked really hard at it without the same results. Each of our kids is very different so we can never be sure what each one will accomplish. Emma will do what she can when she can. Your job is to support her in getting there. And our job (as your newly found CHARGE family) is to support you along the way! Guest guest
Welcome !! My oldest, Wyatt, has CHARGE and we just had another baby. Toby is completely healthy. Guest guest
Still in the hospital. Have a bit of brain fog at the moment..I hate that! I'm getting better. My arms are weak and numb, but function has returned, thank God! The girls are now with a friend as of yesterday and they will stay there as long as necessary. She has four kids of her own for them to play with. I'm hoping that my stay here will not be longer than 2 weeks. As soon as I can do wheelchair transfers, I'm going to convince them to discharge me on homecare, as I'm already in their system and have their own PTs and OTs, etc... Thanks for inquiring, btw...feels nice to know I've been rememberes--this is an awesome group! Guest guest
If everybody follows protocols, the risk is VERY small - my dad had TB when I was a kid, and none of the rest of us developed it. You should be home very soon, God willing! in WY Practical Blackwork Designs " You get a wonderful view from the point of no return... Guest guest
Dear ... I'm glad to hear the girls have a good place to be. I know you were hesitant about going because of the girls.
