A letter out of the blue from a total stranger, who has heard her story 5th

hand, may not be well accepted.

I could suggest a book your daughter could read, and perhaps her friend would

read as well. It is very eye opening, and if the friend reads it , she really

won t need to say much more.

The book is Safe People, by Cloud and Townsend.

She will see her predatory acquintance on its pages, and perhaps, realize what

is what.

Dear BPDingNoMore,

I realize that you may not have done this on purpose, but by writing " There are

many people who choose this lifestyle... " you have communicated a significant

amount of bias. Vegetarianism is a lifestyle, unless you have a health condition

or allergies to animal protein, it is a choice you consciously make and can stop

at any time. However, being gay or lesbian is not a lifestyle. The first time

you had a crush, did you consciously make a " lifestyle choice " to fall for a

boy? Just like you can't explain why or how you happened to have your first

crush, a gay or lesbian person cannot explain why they first felt an attraction

to a person of the same gender.

I am also failing to understand what your intention is and what your goals are

here. I am not a person who advocates for standing by idly when there is real

potential for harm to a child. Some of the wonderful people here, who gave me

excellent advice, will remember that a year ago I was very concerned when my son

came home telling us of a classmate who he suspected was being abused in some

way. We intervened and brought the matter to the attention of the school

officials. The boy has really thrived since then - his school performance

skyrocketed, his parents have been a lot more watchful and involved with the

school, they have enrolled him in excellent extracurricular activities,

behavioral problems have completely disappeared and this child seems truly

happy. (We never found out the full details, but apparently it was either a

relative or family friend who was being inappropriate with this child.)

However, from what you have written, all I am picking up is that there is a

lesbian girl in your daughter's circle and every time this girl attempts to

interact with other girls your daughter attempts to run interference. I realize

that you may be 100% correct in your assessment that this girl has BPD and can

potentially harm other girls. On the other hand, you have presented no evidence

whatsoever - no facts, no specific issues, nothing for us to go on. (In the case

of the boy in my son's class, he was using inappropriate language, being

disruptive, making sexually charged comments that were way above his age and

development level, etc.... all of which I tried to report to the group here so I

could get meaningful input, and I got it in spades. I am forever thankful for

this fantastic support community.)

It also appears that some of your concern may be based on your own previous

personal experiences with a lesbian former friend. This could potentially be

coloring your assessment of and your response to the situation, and may be

unintentionally biasing your daughter.

I applaud you for your concern for these girls, but please give us a little more

information, and I am sure I will not be the only one who would be more than

happy to help you figure out a way to deal with a potentially very difficult

situation. All children deserve a happy childhood, and have a right not to be

abused, be it by adults or their peers.

didn't mean to write that. I do believe that most are born that way. I can

see why you would take issue with those words. I just misspoke.

My daughter has only " run interference " with THIS girl because she feels

that she has changed everything about her lately. She's redefining

everything she is suddenly.

What i see in your post is that you are spending more time focusing on the

one little thing i misspoke about instead of the issue. My daughter just

really wants to know what she can say to the girl and then move on. That's

how my daughter is... she wants to say something and the she's out. If the

girl truly wants to be a lesbian and the 20 other things that she's changing

all the sudden, then she should live without regret and go forget it. But I

highly doubt that she wants her grades to go down, have panic attacks, be

completely consumed with this person, give up all her other friends,

isolate, be irritatble, etc... etc...

I have a lot of friends that are Gay and Lesbian and I don't have an issue

with it. My oldest daughter's first babysitters were a lesbian couple.

That was in 1990. I think I " m pretty comfortable.

So now that you know I'm not anti-Gay and Lesbian, can you offer me some

advice?

thank you.

I'll look for that. I think it's hard even as an adult to figure out how to

pick safe people in a crowd. I bet this would be helpful for a teenager.

And when I say most... I mean that I wonder sometimes if some people become

homosexual or even bi-sexual, due to circumstances. It's just something I

wonder about since so many people who I have met that are Gay/Lesbian have

been sexually abused. Just something I wonder about, I have no idea if

it's true or false.

Yeah there's a lot of politically correct issues pertaining to homosexuality.

People can do what they want and I'm not too worried about it but I have started

paying attention to N issues that may be involved. I'm just really fascinated by

human behavior.

Is the issue here that this girl is trying to convince your

daughter's friend that she's really a lesbian but doesn't know

it? Or maybe that your daughter's friend has decided she's a

lesbian and it seems to be more an attempt to try to get closer

to this girl than a genuine feeling from inside her? If not,

what does her being a lesbian have to do with it? If the girl is

having confused feelings about her own sexuality on top of being

sucked into a problem friendship, that's going to make it even

tougher to deal with without alienating her completely.

In my experience, people, especially teens, who are getting

sucked into a friendship that is problematic have to learn for

themselves that something is wrong. Trying to tell someone that

they shouldn't be friends with someone tends to backfire and

increase the attraction rather than lessen it, especially if

there's some kind of infatuation or obsession involved. Whatever

your daughter says, it probably ought not to involve criticizing

the other girl directly. Perhaps your daughter could tell her

friend that she's concerned about the way she's changed so much

lately and use that as a starting point to discuss why she's

changing. If the other girl is using your daughter's friend

and/or being emotionally abusive to her, it is important that

your daughter be supportive and be available when the

relationship goes bad and her friend ends up feeling hurt.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone you see getting

into that position is be there to listen and make encouraging

comments as they figure out for themselves that something isn't

right about the relationship.

Dear BPDingNoMore,

The reason I focused on certain elements of your message was because there was

little else I could really focus on.

You have to agree that " she has changed everything about her lately " is

extremely vague and gives us practically nothing to go on.

If you want honest and meaningful input/help, you have to help us see this

situation much more clearly.

How was she before?

What are some specific things that have changed?

What is this girl's background?

Which girl are we even talking about - is the lesbian girl the one who has

suddenly changed, or the other friend who is under the influence of the

" lesbian " ?

A drastic change in a child's behavior is much more likely to be caused by

something going on in her family than just one single peer's influence. Kids act

out in response to different stressors (in psychiatry this is defined as an

" immature defense " ). They often look for some group to take them in (e.g.

gangs), something/some cause/some group to which they can belong, when they

perceive that their own safety net is no longer there (for example when parents

are going through divorce and the family is falling apart). Therefore, if it's

the girl who is under the influence of the lesbian who is going through changes,

telling her " the lesbian girl is bad news and a predator " is not going to change

anything unless the root cause of her vulnerability is addressed.

I forgot to add, that I am a little concerned by your statement that your

daughter just wants " to say something and then she's out " . I don't understand

the value of this. When people are going through a tough time it is rarely, if

ever, helpful for someone to just throw a few words in their direction and keep

moving. If you are really committed to helping this girl then you have to be

willing to do more than just " say something " and " move on " . It sounds like your

daughter is a caring person, so I seriously doubt that she intends to act in any

way smug and self-righteous. Unfortunately though, when people just say

something and move on that's how they tend to appear (because their words seem

to serve little purpose beyond being able to say " I told you so " later).

As I said in my previous message, I strongly suspect there is more going on with

this troubled girl - something in her home, something at school, something much

more significant than one single peer trying to convince her that she's a

lesbian.

I am not sure if you meant that she's actually having panic attacks, or you

think she might end up having them (I can't quite pick up solid details from

your message), but if she is having them then there is definitely something

serious going on in her life. A million possibilities are going through my mind

- she could have been recently molested or raped (by a peer, a relative, a

stranger, or even a parent), which could explain dramatic changes in behavior

and a sudden interest in rejecting males, she could have witnessed inappropriate

sexual behavior by someone, one of her parents might have been caught having an

affair, etc.

She is going to stay friends with her, but doesn't want to harp at the

issue. She wants the one statement she says to count and then leave the

issue alone and allow her friend to make her own choices

My daughter doesn't want to act smug or self-righteous and neither do I. We

just thought that this girl might want a heads up that she is about the 12th

empathetic person that she has tried this routine with in the past 7 months.

My daughter and I are in no way " I told you so people " .

Thanks for the statement that there might be more going on with this girl.

You could be right about that. My daughter will probably try to ask her

about that.

I feel you are more interested in the semantics of the matter.

My daughter's friend is the one that has changed.

I don't think I'm going to go through and detail everything out because it

just isn't relevant.

There are tons and tons of situations that my daughter has witnessed the

girl do to people to cause drama and that lead my daughter to feel that she

might be BPDish behavior. That's enough information. My daughter reads

people pretty well for 17 so that's good enough for me.

My daughter also doesn't want to say too much to warn the girl because if

you say to much, then sometimes it can just push a person even further into

the situation.

Thank you for your paragraph about " immature defense " . That was a lot of

really good information.

It's not an issue of lesbianism, it's an issue about how this girl is trying

to change everything about her and there is nothing recognizable about

herself anymore. I think that it might be a family issue at home. I've

been reading these messages to my daughter and a light bulb went off in her

head. My daughter just put two and two together that all these years her

friend has been always trying to act like the responsible child and have

everythign together all the time because of her twin brother who doesn't

have it together. So my daughter's thoughts were... " hmmm... maybe she's

tired of thinking for herself and always thinking about doing the righ thing

and thinking about every action she does and how it will effect everything

else and her future. Maybe she's tired of thinking and likes the idea of

having someone else think for her for a change. "

Ya, my daughter wants to say as little as possible. She just wants to put

it out there that it looks like an unhealthy friendship. Then she wants her

to figure it out for herself or not figure it out and still be her friend

with no I told you so's. I think my daughter has always looked up to her

friend for her drive in life and sees her throwing it all away to see where

the day takes her instead of seeing the big picture. It's kind of

disturbing when you watch someone change right before your eyes. I think

this is my daughter's first experience seeing something like this.

Good point. Be careful not to say anything against the girl she's getting

involved with, just the way she is changing. Great advice.

My daughter will be there for her when/if the relationship doesn't go well.

Dear BPDingNoMore,

I am sorry if I have given you the impression that I am more interested in

semantics, because that is not at all the case. However, I am very aware of

words and the language we use. This could be because while many people have

suffered physical abuse from their BPD parents, the abuse I have suffered has

been mostly of the verbal and emotional type (with only a few physical

episodes). So words are important to me - they are extremely powerful, they can

heal and they can also do very real and very serious damage.

It is quite obvious that this was an emotional issue for you and perhaps you

just wrote your initial message as it came to you. Unfortunately, it didn't give

a lot of details and was a little bit all over the place, which made it hard to

give you something concrete. What I have been attempting to do is point out

potential sources of bias, and most importantly, pin down some specifics. I am

very interested in providing you whatever suggestions and support I can to help

you navigate this situation. (As I mentioned, when a classmate of my older son

was spiraling down, it was a very emotional and difficult time for me, as I

really wanted to figure out the right thing to do to help this child. This

message board was extremely helpful to me during that time, and I would be more

than happy to contribute back in the same way.)

If you have any specifics, any clues, any more details, it will be a lot easier

to give some sound suggestions on how you can improve this situation for both

the girl in trouble and for your daughter (who is undoubtedly distressed by

witnessing these problems).

For now, as I wrote earlier, I do suspect there is more going on. Your daughter

asking her about what's going on in her life is a good start. Speaking with the

school psychologist/counselor, their teacher, or principal would be a great

strategy (provided it's a caring school with caring administrators/teachers),

but again you have to have something more specific and some carefully chosen

words.

Best wishes,

Arianna

Sorry, I asked you for more details before seeing this message (we have too many

messages floating around :)).

It sounds like your daughter has spent some time and careful thought in

considering the situation, and at 17 I would trust my child too (I trusted my

child, younger than yours, last year when he thought his friend had a problem,

and he was right). She is also very wise to realize that saying the wrong thing

can push this troubled girl deeper into this potential abyss. It really sounds

like something dramatic has happened in this girl's life.

Is the school a supportive one? If this girl is actually having panic attacks

and if her grades are already suffering, then some prompt intervention by the

school may be needed. She may be in an abusive situation and her family may not

be aware, or her family may be responsible, in which case she would need to be

placed somewhere safer.

Just to be safe, and not to get anyone else caught up in semantics and

extraneous issues, I would minimize the focus on the lesbian girl and make sure

to put the changes in this troubled girl's behavior front and center. The issue

of the other girl, and even more so, of the other girl's sexual orientation

might serve as a distraction, because at this point they seem to be marginal.

There is something very wrong with this troubled child - if she is severing

long-standing friendship, her grades are slipping, she's suddenly changing her

previously established sexual orientation, etc. Vulnerable teens like her are

easy prey for any type of predator, whether it's a girlfriend with BPD, or a

pedophile online, or an abusive boyfriend, etc.

I wish you and your daughter strength and patience, so that you may be able to

help this troubled child to a better place.

My two cents....this doesn't have to be so complicated. It's very important

that your daughter not take responsibility for the well-being of her friend.

That she understand that sometimes people have to make their own mistakes - and

are really determined to do so!

All she has to do is speak honestly to her friend once, that she's concerned

that the possible BPDfriend is having a bad effect on her because of changes

X,Y, and Z that she observes. Then if the friend chooses to ignore that and

continue it is her choice. Beyond that, delving too deep trying to

psychoanalyze everyone in this situation I think could lead to unhealthy spaces

for your daughter. She's a kid and should be focusing on her own development

right now.

So the girl who's sucking the friend in being a lesbian is a red

herring and not particularly relevant apart from just indicating

one of their differences?

The idea that the friend may be tired of always being the

responsible child might be right on the mark. Kids who've always

been good sometimes get frustrated or rebellious and make sudden

changes for the worse. If her parents have unreasonable or

age-inappropriate expectations of her, that would make it even

more likely that she'd rebel by following someone who'd be seen

as a wild or bad influence. She might see some of the

characteristics she wishes to have in this girl and feel an

excess of admiration for her out of wishing she could be more

like her. Or she might just see that this girl is everything her

parents don't want her to be.

Perhaps there is some trusted adult at school that your daughter

could talk to about her concern for her friend? If a teacher or

other adult whom the girl likes and respects talks to her about

the changes she's making, maybe someone can help her see that

she's potentially causing herself a lot of problems that may

affect her future. I think it would have to be someone the girl

already respects, not just some counselor or school official she

doesn't have a good relationship with. Otherwise she might just

view it as one more adult trying to tell her who to be and how

to act.

I definately have some experiences that could cloud my feelings towards this

situation, which I didn't share with my daughter. I told her I wasn't a

good person to ask about this and so the reason I sent the initial email in

the first place is because my daughter asked me to email the list and ask

because she wanted to prevent herself from bringing her personal experiences

with BPD into the picture. I told her to just let it go and stay out of

it. I know she won't do that because that isn't her style. So she just

wants to come up with an intelligent thing to say when she does say

something.

I'm glad I wrote and asked about this because it helped to remember not to

say anything against the person her friend is involved in because that will

just make it worse. And this might be about things going on with her in her

life rather than the girl she is around.

I didn't go into the details of the matter because I feel they are

irrelevant.

Thank you for all your help everyone. My daughter feels that she has a

better grip on the situation now.

I trust my child. She is an amazing human being. She is smart academically

and life smarts. She is the one that asked me email the question to find

out if there was anything that she might not have thought of.

There is a school counselor there that recognizes predatory behavior. My

youngest isn't aware of it though because she doesn't know why I know that

school counselor is excellent. I wrote to another list about it. Not sure

if you're on that list or not. (Yes, you are right, too many posts floating

around). My oldest daughter dealt with an extremely predatory situation and

the school actually had to get involved because my daughter was going

Catatonic over it during school hours. That counselor was amazing. So I

can tell her to suggest to talk to him if she wants but I highly suspect

that my daughter's friend won't go to him about it. I think it's too late,

which I'm ok with and am hoping my daughter will reach a point where she is

ok with it as well. Just the very fact that her and I are talking about it

this weekend, I think she's coming to terms with it a lot better and might

be able to choose the option of just leaving it alone. We'll see... haha...

My daughter doesn't leave much alone. She has Asperger's and I dont' know

if you have any experience with Asperger's girls but sometimes, they fixate

on stuff.

I couldn't agree with you more. I hope she makes that choice. Another

reason I agreed to send the initial email is because I was hoping to hear

things exactly like this from someone other than me (her mother who children

tend to selectively listen to haha).

I think you may have hit it on the head when you said that the other girl

might be everything her parents don't want her to be.
