Guest guest
My parents are coming up to pick me up from my house to go out for breakfast for mother's day. I think the ride will be a good half hour each way. Anyone have good tips on surviving the car ride and restaurant escapade? I know this is something that people recommend I avoid but I really can't think of a way to not drive myself without seeming like a long-stretched excuse. Guest guest
Just say you have some errands to run afterwards, and need to drive yourself. Just leave it at that. That also gives you the ability to leave in case one or both your parents start acting up on you. " I will not let you talk that way to me. If you do, I will leave. " and if they do act up, leave. > > > My parents are coming up to pick me up from my house to go out for > breakfast for mother's day. I think the ride will be a good half hour each > way. Guest guest
I never, ever get in a car with my mother anymore. It is the perfect place for a BPD attack since it is almost impossible for the victim to escape. If you still want to accept a ride from them, write down or store in your cell phone the number for a cab and take enough money with you for the ride back home. Be prepared to ask them to pull over or stand up and leave at any time if they act up. I think there are some other tips on making a graceful escape from restaurants in another recent thread. Hope that helps. > > My parents are coming up to pick me up from my house to go out for breakfast for mother's day. I think the ride will be a good half hour each way. Guest guest
You'll probably get this tip too late, but...if you can't avoid riding with them, this is what I do: keep a mental list of " safe " things to talk about. Stuff that gets one or both of them going on and on and on. For me, it's my mother's job or stuff that gives her anxiety...off she goes, with nonstop talking! good luck! > > My parents are coming up to pick me up from my house to go out for breakfast for mother's day. Guest guest
OH! one other of my favorite tips for these kind of situations: if possible, invite a buffer to join you, someone who they don't know very well and won't act up with. > > My parents are coming up to pick me up from my house to go out for breakfast for mother's day.
