Guest guest
Yes! I was in al-anon for 7 years and it provides you some great tools for living. Go for it! If you don't like it, they promise to refund your misery. ________________________________ To: WTOAdultChildren1 Sent: Mon, May 16, 2011 7:53:21 AM Subject: Al-Anon Anybody tried it? Is it helpful? Guest guest
I went to a meeting yesterday and I really don't think I understand the format of the meetings. It was one of the more depressing things I've done recently, and mostly depressing because there wasn't any real interaction going on between the people at the meeting. I feel like there's WAY more interaction here on the internet with you guys, and here, we can respond to one another. We don't just say, " Thank you for sharing " and leave it at that... Also, I'm an atheist, so the praying and putting things into God's hands is kind of wearing on me. I think faith is awesome if you've got it, but in a situation like this, where I already feel isolated, it only serves to make me feel MORE isolated, you know what I mean? Maybe I need to go to more meetings. Maybe it's not my cup of tea. Maybe I should watch Fight Club again. I just don't know yet... > > Yes! Guest guest
Maybe see if there is a CODA meeting in your area and try that. Its for those overcoming co-dependency. Or perhaps there is a NAMI meeting in your area; that's a support group for those with mentally ill family members. Or, perhaps your therapist knows of or runs a group therapy group you could join. I think a lot of the flavor of how a group works has to do with who is in it and/or running it. Like in a company you work for: it can be a relatively healthy, well functioning workplace or it can be a toxic hell, and its usually coming from upper management. If the boss is nice, its a nice place to work. -Annie > > > > Yes! I was in al-anon for 7 years and it provides you some great tools for > > living. Go for it! Guest guest
I'm not really co-dependent, though. Maybe I'll check out NAMI, or maybe I need to be in a group that's like, specializing in kids of alcoholics, like this group does. I am just looking for a new perspective. My inability to express emotion and neverending lack of energy/motivation is wearing people in my life down. > > > > > > Yes! Guest guest
Every scheduled meeting is different, and there are differences from one city to another. Some meetings are sharing based, others have a specific agenda (i.e., step study). I hear some meetings can get pretty wild, with members calling each out on avoidance and justification, but I have not ever seen that in the midwest. Also, the smaller the city, the more 'God' is thrown around. People is suburban areas are more careful about recognizing not everyone has the same higher power concepts. Sounds like the meeting you went to is nowhere near the one you need to find. > > > > Yes! I was in al-anon for 7 years and it provides you some great tools for > > living. Go for it!
