I just thought I'd throw this out for anyone who may be considering " city

chickens " ...

I visited a farm the other day to get some new chicks, which they were

keeping in a small outbuilding. They had made a small (4 x 8) aviary out of

the other side, just fenced it off with some chicken wire and added a

light. In it were 4 hens. I asked what were they for? The guy said, " Oh,

they are the owner's. 4 eggs a day! And that pen hasn't been cleaned for 3

months! " .

The significant part here is not that this is an ideal way to keep a bird,

but that for a cage that hadn't been cleaned in 3 months, it smelled and

looked just fine. The hard part about keeping " city chickens " is cleaning

the cage constantly, but there are some wood pellets out now (for horse

stalls) that REALLY absorb odor. They break down into sawdust-type

material. I haven't checked all the ingredients yet, but if they are ok,

it's a great idea. And for those of you who REALLY want fresh eggs, you can

keep a few birds and just feed them well (or make them an attached " run " or

let them have access to your yard, if possible). They like kitchen scraps,

so ours double as a garbage disposal (wilty salad greens, watermelon rinds,

etc.)
