Can I afford an Independent Retirement CommunitySeniors today have questions about the affordability of Independent Living retirement communities. Since most seniors have been retired for 10 or more years when they start researching independent living retirement community options, they are not struggling over how to PLAN for retirement; they are struggling with whether or not their money will last as long as they do! These seniors could benefit from some rules-of-thumb from a Financial Planner that they trust. Questions to ask a Financial Planner include: how to project income after allowable medical and allowable "care" tax deductions and after including investment interest over a 15 - 20 year period; what do with cash and how much cash should be kept on hand; etc. Some seniors are concerned about leaving a financial legacy for their children. Most are dependent upon the sale of the home to supplement income and they want to know how to best make that money work for them for as long as possible. These are legitimate questions that are essential to the retirement community planning process. A majority of seniors seeking the independent living retirement lifestyle are now mortgage-free and anticipate significant proceeds with a sale. They want to know how to gauge the housing market and time the sale of the home for the most return on

investment. It is a good question to ask a Financial Planner; "should I sell now or wait for housing prices to get better?" Continuation - Independent Retirement Community

Zero BalancingZero Balancing is a holistic bodywork modality which balances the energy flow and structure of the body while the client lies face up, fully clothed on a massage table. Throughout a session the practitioner systematically assesses the movement and energy quality of the bones of the

spine, torso, hips, feet, neck, and head. As blockages of energy are released with firm but gentle stretches, rotations, and finger-tip pressure, the client experiences a deep state of relaxation and tranquility, usually accessible only through meditation or really sound sleep. The client's body releases tension and tissue-held trauma-from past physical or psychological injuries or from past or present emotional issues throughout the session, and for up to three days following it. As the client's body re-orients itself, reintegrating energy, gaining or tightening range of motion, and making postural adjustments, the mind returns to its natural peaceful state, allowing for experiences of insight, wonder, and connectedness. Additional work on the joints, organs, and tissues are incorporated into the session by the practitioner, as needed.

Is Zero Balancing New?Not really. Zero Balancing, also known as ZB, was developed by Dr. Fritz back in 1973. A chiropractor's son and an osteopath himself, Dr. created this modality after studying acupuncture, chi, and the meridian systems of the body through which the chi energy flows. In Zero Balancing the Western understanding of human anatomy and the Eastern wisdom concerning the natural pathways of the body's energy come together to create relaxation, renewal, and healing on all levels.

Travel ideasYou know as I've been reading the newsletters that have come out, I think there is a lot of good advise for seniors, and that's good. So I sat down and asked myself, what would I like to read about? I have just gotten back from a trip to Australia. I traveled with a group of women. One was 74, one 82, one 77, one was 72 and I'm 60. We toured Sydney, then up the coast of New South Wales, flew to Coolengata on the Gold Coast toured around there; went to a rainforest, then whale watching, snorkeling, and touring around a little bit on the Sunshine Coast.

Now if we can go traveling around, why not you? There are all types of tours for seniors out there and each is more fun than the next. There are senior cruises, bus trips around the United States and Canada, train trips down the coast of Mexico, or through Australia and Canada. There are European trips and River cruises both in Europe and the United States and Canada. There are gambling trips, if that is your thing and cruise tours that include a tour before or after the cruise. And you know that no one is too old for Disney! I have a couple of group tours that I am forming for 2011. If you are reading an email publication, then you're ready to travel. If you have a group of friends that you enjoy and know that you would like to travel with, call them and let them know about the trips and get your group together. Well, the fact of the matter is, not all of the parts that we all hold so dear to our hearts, work

as well as they once did. So, instead of fretting about our troubles, let's concentrate on something fun and exciting. What are your interests? If you let me know, I can give you information about what is going on around the world that would entertain those interests. Are you into genealogy? How about sports? Do you have remembrances of WWII that you'd like to explore? My personal favorite is relaxing! OSA can be life threatening: Treating it is importantIn fact, OSA reportedly contributed to the 2004 death of football great Reggie White. Experts also believe that it may be responsible for a high percentage of on-the-job injuries and motor vehicle accidents, as well. In fact there is a 10 % higher frequency of automobile accidents with Sleep Apnic patients. SO, if you have some of these symptoms you should be evaluated ASAP. THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT CAN ALERT YOU TO SLEEP APNEA ARE....· Frequent cessation of breathing (apnea) during sleep· Choking, gasping, or gagging during sleep to get air into the lungs· Loud

snoring· Waking up sweating during the night· Feeling unrefreshed in the morning after a night's sleep· Headaches upon awakening· Daytime sleepiness· Lethargy· Rapid weight gain· Memory loss and learning difficulties· Short attention span· Depression· GERG - Acid reflux· Poor Judgment· Personality changesWhile continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is still

considered the most efficacious treatment for OSA, many patients find this form of treatment uncomfortable or intolerable, making an oral appliance often a more appropriate option. The new practice parameters validate the effectiveness of oral appliances as a viable treatment alternative for those patients with mild to moderate OSA who either prefer it to CPAP, or are unable to successfully comply with CPAP treatment. Until there is higher quality evidence to suggest efficacy, CPAP is indicated whenever possible for patients with severe OSA before considering oral appliances. WESTCHESTER, ILL., February 1 - New practice parameters published today by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in the medical journal SLEEP recommend oral appliances as a first-line treatment for snoring and mild - moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This is good news for the estimated 18 million OSA sufferers in the U.S., since it enables them to avoid the

risks associated with surgery and the discomfort that can accompany other treatment methods. "Oral appliances may help people who have tried other OSA treatments and have been unsuccessful or who have not complied with their treatment," added Lawrence Epstein, M.D., president, American Academy of Sleep Medicine. "OSA is a serious, life-threatening condition - but for may patients, alleviating its effects can be as easy as utilizing an oral appliance at night," explains ADSM president, Kent , M.D., D.D.S. "Oral appliances, which resemble sports mouth guards, may control mild to moderate OSA with minimal discomfort or disruption."This practice parameter is based on an accompanying review of extensive evidence found in the scientific literature that was performed by an expert task force. According to Dr. , oral appliances offer a safe, effective and non-invasive treatment option for the

millions of Americans suffering from OSA and severe, chronic snoring. When utilized during sleep, they help maintain an open and unobstructed airway in the throat by repositioning or stabilizing the lower jaw, tongue, soft palate or uvula. There are many types of oral appliances, with some designed specifically for snoring and others intended to treat both snoring and sleep apnea. An oral appliance is a highly effective solution, for the majority of patients, to the problem of loud snoring and mild to moderate OSA. Its exceptional levels of patient acceptance and compliance, and treatment efficacy are backed by a large body of clinical research. Continuation - Independent Retirement CommunityChoose a Financial Planner who understands that making a move to a retirement community is more than a financial decision. It involves tough choices about the realities of a change. It involves realistic evaluations of the current living situation. It involves exploring the "what-if" scenarios of potential future needs. There are decisions to be made about where (geographically) you might like to live, and, what lifestyle goals you would have at a new residence. If a move to a retirement

community is right for you, pro-active planning definitely includes a careful review of finances. This is a first step no matter where the housing market appears on the economic bell curve. Work with a Financial Planner to evaluate how your financial situation matches up to what you have decided is right for you. Ask questions such as:

how can I maximize my income and assets to reach my lifestyle goals and potential future care needs?

What part do insurances: life and long term care play in the financial evaluation?

After the Monthly Service Fee, which includes my apartment, interior and exterior maintenance, housekeeping, scheduled transportation, one meal per day, fitness center, activities, taxes and utilities, how much extra should I plan on for sundries?

What happens if I run out of money? In today's economic downturn, another important discussion to have with a Financial Planner is the question of waiting to see if the housing market turns around before the research begins. It is altogether possible seniors could lose more than they might gain if they wait. First, beyond the monetary loss, seniors who wait could find themselves stuck in a living situation that no longer suits their needs - and missing out on the very things that make retirement community living attractive such as freedom from home maintenance and housekeeping, the health advantages of nutritious food and exercise, and the social benefits of peer interactions. Also, there is no way to predict even if the housing market gets better how long it would take (if ever) to return to pre-downturn prices. Lastly, ask your Financial Planner if it

is possible that selling now could net a better return on your investment than waiting. Yes, your house is likely to continue to appreciate in value - but the cost of living in your home is also rising; taxes, insurance, regular maintenance costs, and big ticket repairs. If you sell your home now you will not get boom prices, but if you have owned your home for years, you will still get a good overall appreciated price. The fees at the retirement community of your choice are not going to go down, they will most likely go up, so does the cost of taxes, insurance, maintenance, and upkeep at your present home. If you lock in a lower rate at the retirement community now, the savings will compound for as long as you make the community your home, compared to paying higher fees in a better economy. Make sure you are comparing home costs to the costs of a full-service retirement community where everything is included. It is a good idea to enlist

the help of a Senior Specialist Realtor who can provide realistic feedback on how many days on the market is average for your area and how that number of days varies between housing at high, medium and lower price points. That information will also be helpful for planning your move. Everyone's financial situation just as everyone's needs and wants are different. Be honest with yourself about what you want and what it will take to get there. Take the time to meet with a Financial Planner and don't let a downturn market keep you from evaluating your options and making a good choice in retirement community living.

Continuation - Zero BalancingWhat Are the Benefits of Zero Balancing? Clients have found that it reduces stress and alleviates problems associated with stress, such as muscular tension, irritability, nervousness, and insomnia. It improves postural alignment, reduces aches and pains, and releases trauma held in the tissues of the body without having to identify it or discuss it. ZB has also been used to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of headache, backache, depression, and fatigue.Regular treatments allow clients to gain greater

perspective on the events in their lives, achieve the dissolution of long held limiting and uncomfortable patterns of all kinds-whether those beliefs are conscious or not, and return the body and mind to a state of equilibrium. Additionally clients have found that incorporating ZB into their lives aids them on their chosen paths of development and transformation by providing them with a greater understanding of their emotions and their bodies and a deeper connection to their wholeness and inner peace. Zero Balancing promotes optimal ongoing health and harmony through the use of informed, skilled touch. Many people seek initial treatment to relieve symptoms from an ailment or injury but continue their sessions because of the increased quality of life they find themselves enjoying. Naturally this modality works in conjunction with traditional medical treatment and is not a substitute for it. How Often Would I Need a Treatment? At the

beginning a session is scheduled each week for three weeks.By then you will have a strong sense whether this modality is right for you. As the benefits of Zero Balancing last longer and longer, appointments may be scheduled every two weeks, then every three. Eventually a monthly session might be all you need for the maintenance of optimal health.Written by:Eileen Mahood-Zero Balancing at Mind, Body, Spirit of WaldwickE-mail - Eileen
