Guest guest
> I have a baby that is ten months old and having a difficult time getting him started on solids. I have fed him avocados, mashed on and off. I thought this would be a good fat for him. I have also tried cooked squash, mashed bananas and egg yolk. He seems to have tummy aches at night after I have fed him these things all at different times of course. They have all been hard to get down him. He tongue thrusts most of it out. He does like to pick up food his brothers and sisters leave behind and chew on it. He really seems to like foods he can feed himself. He loved chewing on some bread and waffles left behind by siblings. I know he would eat these more willingly than what I spoon feed him, but I didn't want to start him on grains and they are a mixed food. I am breastfeeding him and it is the only thing he gets most days. Could I start getting him to drink our goat milk from a cup and when I am sure he is used to it, add egg yolks? He is on the small side and seems to have a delicate digestion at this point. Would love any suggestions! Thanks, I'm not a parent, but my gut feeling is that you should let him eat what he likes even if they aren't the ideal food. Encouraging a healthy appetite is more important than feeding the perfect diet, IMO. The egg yolks and milk sounds like a good food if the milk is raw but I'm biased - that's my favorite breakfast! Have you tried feeding him bits of meat that you have already chewed and softened? I read in NT or on the WAP site that african mothers would feed bits of masticated raw liver as their childs first food. Meat is pretty easy to digest. Guest guest
at 10 months he should already be on finger foods, and he's clearly wanting that,so I would stop giving him mush and give him food cut up small. My daughter stopped wanting to be spoon fed at 5 months and ever since has eaten by herself. I used to scramble eggs into an omelet and cut up into squares. Cooked fine grain kasha gets thick in the fridge, then can be cut into squares and warmed a bit. Vegetables are easy to make into finger foods. bananas are full of sugar, I would go easy on them. You can make him potato pancakes with just the yolk. Cut up apples is good or make him chunky apple sauce. If you don't want to give him wheat, you can make waffles and pancakes from buckwheat or rice flour. I would probably give organic cheese but if he's been vaccinated then you have to be more careful about allergies. Guest guest
Why rush it? I'd let him eat solids when he feels like it. Some people think the cause of most allergies is feeding foods too early, and there is no harm in waiting. Babies have very thin guts and lack certain digestive abilities: certainly howling and tongue thrusting could be signs that he knows what is good for him. I started feeding some solids fairly early, but mainly because the kid was screaming for food and scarfed them down (she LOVED rice cereal). I did not feed her proteins though, or wheat, because of the potential allergy problems. But I could not produce enough breast milk -- probably because my own nutritional condition was so bad. If I COULD have only done breast milk, I would have. Other cultures do breastfeeding as a main source of food for years and the babies thrive. The push to feed babies early is, I think, primarily a result of Gerber advertising! -- Heidi At 10:29 AM 4/17/2002 -0500, you wrote: >I have a baby that is ten months old and having a difficult time getting >him started on solids. Guest guest
Unless he is not thriving (keeping pace with his own growth curve), there's no reason to worry about him. If all he wants is breastmilk, that's all you need to give him. Breastmilk is a complete food and can sustain a child long past 10 months as the sole source of nutrition. Tongue thrust is a good sign that his digestive system is really not mature enough; possibly a sign that he may have food allergies. Forget the spoon altogether. I never spoon fed my kids who are now 6y and 4y - finger foods are the lazy mom's solids! If he really wants to eat some finger foods, just cut up the avocado or whatever into small pea-size chunks and let him make a huge mess on his high chair tray and himself. I like the idea of putting the egg yolk into the milk (I have a 6.5mo myself). ~ Carma ~ To be perpetually talking sense runs out the mind, as perpetually ploughing and taking crops runs out the land.
