LOL -Wes EMS commanders, trainers disciplined for sexual harassment charges One commander mooned cadets during a pre-training exercise, report says. By _Claire Osborn_ (http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/01/05/mailto:cosborn@s\ tatesman.com) AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Saturday, January 05, 2008 Two Austin- County Emergency Medical Services commanders and four instructors were punished Friday in connection with accusations of sexual harassment stemming from a November training session. During pretraining exercises, an EMS commander dropped her pants and mooned cadets, and other instructors used vulgarity and racial slurs, an EMS official said Friday. The two commanders involved in the incident have been put on probation, removed from the training academy and given temporary suspensions, said Ernesto , acting director of Austin- County EMS. The four instructors who were involved in the exercise were reprimanded, he said. Two volunteer trainers who were at the exercise will be replaced during training by EMS staff. EMS released a report on the incident Friday written by an outside investigator. called the behavior of the staff members who were disciplined " completely unacceptable. " " I will not tolerate this, " he said. The staff members included commanders Broadwater and Janelle Boone, as well as training captains , Shadden, Jim Persons and Andres Capra. Broadwater was suspended for five days without pay, and Boone was suspended for three days without pay. The incident happened Nov. 2 during an outdoor team-building training weekend for 13 cadets at the Highland Lakes Baptist Encampment in Spicewood. Since 1995, the training weekend has been held for cadets after their first week on the job. Before the training started, the staff held an ice-breaking exercise called " I Itch " at a pavilion in the woods during which the command staff tried to do embarrassing things to make themselves more human, the report said. During the exercise, Boone pulled down her pants and showed her buttocks to the group, which made some participants uncomfortable and feel like they were obligated to do likewise, the report said. Broadwater grabbed his pants in the crotch area as part of the exercise, and Shadden touched her breasts while still wearing her shirt, the report said. EMS staff members made vulgar jokes and swore during another exercise the same night, the report said. said training sessions have been held with EMS staff members since the incident to emphasize the organization's values and expectations. An investigation was done immediately after the November incident, but EMS administrators decided reports from cadets at the time did not warrant further inquiry, said Warren Hassinger, an EMS spokesman. " Only after someone from outside the cadet class came forward with more pointed accusations did Ernie request the outside investigation, " Hassinger said. **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
Ya know, I can believe that some of these things happened as a majority of us in EMS tend to have thick skins and a bad sense of humor. And perhaps it was taken to far. But i find it very hard to believe that these paticular people did everything they've been accused of doing. On last night's 6 o'clock news it was stated that these people were making gay, racial, sexual jokes as well as " dead baby jokes " . This i find particularly hard to digest since less than one week prior to this supposed event most of the people on that list attended the funeral of my 13 day old daughter. Hell, one of them even picked my grandmother up from the airport so that she could attend the services. If this was a lapse in judgement, let us all learn from it because we are all guilty of forgetting to use the filter from our brains to our mouths at some point in time. > > I know people want to " Keep Austin Weird " but I did not know EMS was > included.
