Guest guest
No holidays are celebrated in my community on Sundays here except Christmas and Easter so the grandkids went out trick-or-treating last night. The grandkids are all in a stupor today from their colored candy. Seriously in a stupor. That's because almost all of my grandkids have reactions to artificial food colors and most preservatives. But their parents make an exception on Halloween so the kids can be like all other children and have the colored Halloween candy. Tonight we are having our annual family Halloween party, complete with hay ride and s'mores around the campfire. I am make a pumpkin spice graveyard cake for the party. I hope it turns out like I want it to. My 14 year old granddaughter is in the kitchen making Halloween sugar cookies and cupcakes. My daughter-in-law is making bread dough now to set to rise all day. We are having an assortment of snacky type food along with fry bread and beans for dinner. My daughter and her husband and 4 kids will join us late this afternoon. So today I will have all eight of my grandkids here! hugs to all of you on this very spooky day:) SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Kate... It was a wonderful time and I am exhausted today:) It sounds like you haven't ever had Indian Fry Bread. Right? It's just what it sounds like--fried bread dough. We like to put a smear of refried beans on it. Sometimes fry bread is made into "Indian Tacos" with refried beans, lettuce, tomato and salsa on top. Other times it is just served with a little butter and honey or just a sprinkle of sugar. love SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Thanks for sharing the recipe, Sharon. It sounds delish. Some of my kids like refried beans, some do not... do you make your own refried beans? What sort of beans do you use; black, kidney, small red?I like it the sweet way myself.Love, KateTo: MSersLife Sent: Mon, November 1, 2010 3:14:10 PMSubject: Re: Halloween here at Sharon's house Kate... Guest guest
Hi KateYes, I make my own beans. I cook pinto beans then mash them. Do you want to know the secret of excellent refried beans? You must fry them in lard, not oil or shortening. It's the only way to make authentic Mexican refried beans. hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Sharon, When you said "fry bread".. I immediately thought of the stuff my cousin's grandmother used to make when we'd visit on a Sunday afternoon (as kids).. She always had homemade bread, but it works with store bought'n too.. But she'd butter both sides of the bread, pretty heavily, and then place them on a cast iron griddle on the stove.. and grill both sides of the bread.. sort of like a grilled cheese, without the cheese.. Up here though, what you call "fry bread" we call "fried dough".. but it usually the dough put in a deep fryer.. when it comes out, it's either dipped in powdered sugar or a mixture of cinnamon and sugar is sprinkled generously on both sides... People actually make their living for the year, traveling to different fairs and carnivals with there little trailers.. But the one thing I loved very much as a kid was the local "grange" fair would get those little vanilla and chocolate ice cream squares, that came wrapped in like parchment paper or something.. but they would toast waffles, take them out of the toaster and pop that ice cream square between two waffles, and sprinkle them with powdered sugar.. and make an ice cream sandwich.. they were great!! I've tried to do them at home for the boys when they were growing up.. they were good, but nowhere near what I remembered from that "fair".. Halloween sounds great around your house.. I wish I could do for Halloween, all the things I love to do.. For most people Christmas is their favorite holiday.. I like it fine, but Halloween is the one I'd go all out for.. I love all the spooky stuff!!! That is something I definitely miss.. Guest guest
Kate... Nope Lard isn't bacon grease.. though it does come from a rendered pig.. You can usually find Lard in the grocery store.. in the cooler section somewhere.. Lard has to be kept refrigerated or it turns rancid.. Lard is the secret that most baker's won't tell you about.. but Lard was something used, in the good old days.. it's what made the bread golden brown (well that and the pinch of sugar added) and the pie crusts extra flaky.. and quite a few other things.. My mother used Lard in her pizza dough.. an people came from West Virgina to her place in the mountains of PA to get her pizzas and take them home with them.. they'd buy five or six and take them home and freeze them.. The Lard along with a pinch or two of sugar would turn her pizza crusts a nice golden brown.. HUGS |)onna You mean like bacon grease? I don't know where you get lard from...duh! Sorry, maybe it's obvious, but I'm sorta dense, you know? Are pinto beans red? I wanna make em now. hugs back atcha, Kate
