Guest guest
I just discovered through my work with a counselor that my mother most likely has bpd. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that her erratic, controlling behavior had a name and that my brother and I are NOT alone in dealing with someone like this. No one ever believed us. " She so nice and she loves you " ,they say. Yet, they have never seen the red faced rage because they chewed their food too loudly or walked too heavily. They have not been the recipients of constant put down humor or isolated from friends and neighbors. I doubt any of them who think she is so wonderful and misunderstood were ever chased up the stairs while being hit or hid under bed covers to get away from the beating. My heart goes out to all of you on this list, but I am so relieved to know that it is NOT just me. That I am not over reacting and I am not making things up, as some would believe. I feel validated now, if that makes any sense. Rosie
Guest guest
Welcome to the Group Rosie. Yes, I too found it so validating to discover that it wasn't just me, that I wasn't the only one who had grown up with a mother who could seem so nice and charming around other adults, and yet could change into such a terrifying, raging, critical person toward me (and my Sister and our dad) in private. Her rages sometimes struck out of the blue, and at other times I could see the irritation and anger building up in her toward an explosive rage. Her rages often included physical violence toward my Sister and me, as well as shaming and humiliating us. It helped me greatly to realize that I did not cause my mother to act that way. So, you are not alone. My suggestion for new members is to read up as much as you can about the Cluster B personality disorders. Borderline pd is part of this cluster: the dramatic, erratic personality disorders are histrionic pd, borderline pd, narcissistic pd, and antisocial pd. Some of the traits and behaviors of the other Cluster B pds can overlap borderline pd, and sometimes occur with bpd as a comorbidity. There are many good books out there now, such as Randi Kreger's books, and Lawson's book " Understanding The Borderline Mother " , and a book called 'Surviving A Borderline Parent. " There are books about overcoming codependency, and about setting protective boundaries for yourself, also. There is a reading list at the home site of this Group. There is something about understanding and accepting that our parent has a genuine mental illness that somehow allows us to take their abusive behaviors toward us less personally; it helps us to shed the misplaced guilt, inappropriate feelings of responsibility and false beliefs that if we somehow try harder, we will change our parents or cure them, or make them happy. It is simply not in our power to save our mentally ill parent from their own self. Nothing we can possibly do or say can make your mother happy with herself, inside herself. She is the only one who has that power, but she has to want to change herself and seek therapy. We, the children of the mentally ill, did not cause our parent to become mentally ill and we can't cure them. All we CAN do, all we have the power to do is decide how we are going to behave, and how we are going to manage a relationship with someone who is chronically abusive to us, or dangerous to us, or someone who chronically exploits us, or is chronically looking to us to rescue them. We CAN choose to protect ourselves, and seek therapy for ourselves to help us heal from the emotional damage inflicted on us during our vulnerable growing-up years. As adults we now have the power to create normal, reasonable boundaries to protect ourselves from further exploitation, mistreatment, and abuse, such as going Low or LImited Contact with firm boundaries and consequences in place. In the most severe cases (if our parent or sibling is threatening to harm us/our family physically or do other harm) we have the power to decide to go totally No Contact either temporarily or permanently. So, welcome. We're all on a journey here toward personal healing and greater peace, each by our own paths. But its good to have fellow travelers on that road with us. -Annie > > I just discovered through my work with a counselor that my mother most likely has bpd.
