Guest guest
Well - it was wonderful! One of Aubrie's comments was, " Know what's really cool? All the kids have hearing aids. " I think it means a lot to her to be with other kids like her. The aide said she looked a bit overwhelmed at one point, but then before she knew it Aubrie was signing away with the kids! She could see her watching very closely and taking it all in and consciously learning. She also thought she seems more socially outgoing on the playground than at the public school. I think the smaller groups really work well for her. The aide also noticed that instruction is more individualized - of course, with only 5 students. She thinks it will make a big difference as she is learning a new concept or practicing a new skill having someone paying attention and re-teaching when she is misunderstanding or making an error. Rather than practice something wrong for an entire class time, she will get the right info immediately and then practice correctly. And there's no worry about missing the idea and falling behind because the teacher won't go on if she doesn't get it. This may be her chance to show us what she is really capable of academically. Of course, it's only the first day so it's hard to tell how the instruction will go throughout the year. I've never taught with so few kids nor have I observed a small classroom over a long period of time. It should be really great. The aide also noticed how very friendly all the staff is. There is a very familial atmosphere since they are set up residentially. With so many students living there, the staff is invested in the student's lives 24/7. There's no disconnect between home and school because home is school. But - they also do a great job of communicating with home. I had several emails from the principal already today. All of the staff have email and the kids all get their own email address too. The aide sat at the lunch table with the principal today and was surprised at how intimately she knew every child and their needs. Also - the teachers all eat in the cafeteria with the class. Again - just like family. They had a heck of a time with the BC aide. The headband kept slipping off. But they've had experience with them and suggested that maybe she needs the next larger size headband. So I've got a call in to try to get one. I had an enjoyable day with . We got our hair cut and bought basic school supplies for him. We also ate Arby's (his favorite place right now). I noticed that I now have to look up to look him in the eye! More as things unfold.
