DonnaI hadn't ever heard that about graham crackers. Interesting! When I had my first baby my mil told me to mix real thin baby cereal in a bedtime bottle for her. I had to enlarge the opening of the nipple a tiny bit so the cereal would go through. That way she slept longer and sounder. No, we weren't crazy about being cooped up in that cabin with my dil with the horrible sore throat. I don't remember getting sick that time though. Of course, us MSers have the overactive immune system and that keeps me from getting most illnesses. But if I DO get sick it is so much worse that for the others in my family. I am going to try that onion cough syrup the next time I get a bad cough! SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. I'm happy

to hear that your daughter-in-law survived the killer sore

throat, though I'm also thinking that you guys weren't

tremendously thrilled with being cooped up "indoors" with her

during her treatment period.. LOL... I LOVE garlic, though I'm

not so sure I'd be wanting to drink a "tea" made from it.. and

tells me, if Earl or I are doing the cooking, that he'll

make me up a bed on the porch if I eat that.. LOL..

Home remedies actually seem to work better than modern medicine

at times.. had a really really.. well probably his first

bout with pneumonia one winter.. and he would NOT go to the

doctor.. so I made up a mustard plaster for his chest.. didn't

have dried mustard powder stuff.. so substituted bottled

mustard.. It, surprisingly, worked!!..

I still can't imagine using the onion cough syrup type thing

though.. I do know that an onion cut in half and placed over a

bee sting (wasp, hornet type sting) will draw the venom out of

the sting if you get to it immediately.. or fairly soon after

the sting.. and hornet venom when absorbed by the onion, will

turn that spot of the onion black..

Always kept Graham Crackers on hand when the boys were babies

and toddlers.. they will resolve constipation for a baby within

an hour or so.. just have to crush them up and mix them into the

formula in a consistency that the baby can swallow.. (newborn,

has to be extremely thin that can be sucked through a nipple

where as a baby who has started on strained stuff can actually

have a baby cereal consistency).. but that something I learned

from my mother as well.. newborns who aren't sleeping 4 hours

between feedings.. just aren't getting enough in their tummies

(usually).. and if given some substance in their stomach, will

sleep for four or more hours.. doesn't hurt them.. none of the

children given this developed allergies to anything.. even if

the doctor doesn't like the idea... keeps them regular

comfortable and happy little creatures.. LOL

When we were in Alaska my daughter-in-law got

horribly ill and had a killer sore throat. She didn't have

insurance (and didn't want to hike out two miles each way

anyway:) so she looked through one of her books and found a cure

for a sore throat. It was garlic tea. She put four big cloves

of garlic in a cup and poured boiling water over it. She drank

it as hot as she could (while making all sorts of faces) and

then ate the garlic. She did that several times each day for a

couple of days. Her sore throat was cured and so was she.

The onions sounds similar except for the addition of the sugar.

Interesting!

That

certainly sounds better than what tells me his

mother made for them when they were kids... not sure if

it's an old Lithuanian cure or what... But she'd chop up

onions, put them in a bowl, completely cover them with

sugar, then put something HEAVY on top of that mixture

in the bowl.. that will somehow "juice" up.. and she'd

ladle that into them by the tablespoons... Personally I

think it SCARED the cold out of them.. LOL..

Sharon,

Well the Graham Cracker thing.. My mother brought my cousin home

from the hospital as a newborn.. (long ugly story behind that

one, but his mother died shortly after he was born).. the

doctor's were actually sending him home to die, because he

wouldn't put on any weight or anything, and they had no clue as

to why (this was 1948 or 49).. My mother talked to one of my

dad's aunts who had a son that was exactly the same way when he

was born.. in the mid 20's.. (he grew into a tall strapping

man).. and the aunt told her that she fed him the graham

crackers every couple of hours.. and he began to thrive.. So my

mom did the same thing with my cousin.. and by the time they

went in to see the doctor in a week or so.. he had put on weight

and the doctor was amazed.. and he told my mother, he hadn't

expected to see them for a baby visit, he expected the little

boy to die.. (same theory worked on Zucco when we got him too..

fed and watered him little bits every two hours.. until he could

keep it all down, then added a bit more and a bit more.. and now

the horse weighs 76 pounds!.. the vet didn't expect to see him

again either)..

My mother would listen to my first sister-in-law and brother

whine about the baby not sleeping more than 2 hours at a clip,

and then being fussy all the time when she was awake.. Mom kept

telling SIL to FEED the baby, she was hungry, and SIL refused

cause the doctor said no.. and SIL also kept that baby on the

rigid every 4 hour feeding schedule.. no giving her a bottle in

between or anything.. Well.. I remember, mom was babysitting..

and she didn't have time for the SIL's nonsense.. the minute, or

shortly after they left.. mom took out the graham crackers..

mixed up a bowl of "cereal" consistency mush for her.. fed the

baby.. who smacked her lips and opened up her mouth like a

hungry little bird.. One her belly was full.. she went right off

to sleep, and stayed that way.. woke for a bit while getting her

ready to go home, but continued to sleep, and then slept for a

few more hours after she got home.. SIL called pissed to the

MAX.. wanting to know what my mom did to her baby.. Mom just

told her.. the baby was hungry so I FED her.. try it sometime..

SIL soon learned my mother just wasn't as dumb as she believed

her to be.. and that her pediatrician wasn't as smart as she

believed him to be..

I never had a problem with either of the boys.. started feeding

them something other than formula from the day we came home..

doctor's change their opinions of how to feed a newborn every

couple of years.. so I just went with what was tried and true..

if the baby is hungry FEED IT.. Earl started sleeping the whole

night through by the time he was six weeks old.. Unseasoned

mashed potatoes, baby cereal.. but the graham cracker thing was

always around.. as well.. then I didn't have to deal with

constipation.. And yup.. I had to cut a cross in a couple of his

nipples as well.. for him to be able to suck the cereal through

the nipple.. DARN.. do you realize just how wealthy one of us

would be had we thought to start manufacturing those nipples???

Oops...

forgot the 2nd paragraph reply.. uh duh..

I'm happy to hear that you don't usually catch whatever is going

round the house.. I wish I could say the same.. couple years

ago, when I was working, we just kept passing whatever the

hacky-coughy-wish-we-were-dead-hoof-n-mouth disease it was back

and forth and all around the two ('s & mine) offices..

Was a miserable couple of months.. and I still get everything

brought into 's office, whether he gets it or not.. to

paraphrase Sam Cooke's song.. he Brings it on Home to Me!..

Here's to hoping for a virus free winter for all of us..

back in the day - late 60's they had plastic syringes - jumbo size for formula and cereal for babies - by the time my oldest was six months old he always woke up for "Dark Shadows" and I better have the 3 syringes ready to go - he was hungry - he was a premie and was eating fruit with his formula at 3 weeks - didn't tell the docs though

did the same thing with his brother

a year later he would grab a green bean or french fry off my plate and gum it into submission

my grand daughter is tiny and skinny - doctors are into starving kids again

My son got pissed at me when I told him in exasperation to look in his baby book and see when I started him (MS memory again) - he got pissed and didn't call for 6 months

feed the kid and make sure their tummies are full and they will sleep and get strong God, grant me the strength of eagles wings, the faith and courage to fly to new heights, and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there.

When we were in Alaska my daughter-in-law got horribly ill and had a killer sore throat. She didn't have insurance (and didn't want to hike out two miles each way anyway:) so she looked through one of her books and found a cure for a sore throat. It was garlic tea. She put four big cloves of garlic in a cup and poured boiling water over it. She drank it as hot as she could (while making all sorts of faces) and then ate the garlic. She did that several times each day for a couple of days. Her sore throat was cured and so was she. The onions sounds similar except for the addition of the sugar. Interesting!

I wish I could say the same.. couple years ago, when I was working, we just kept passing whatever the hacky-coughy-wish-we-were-dead-hoof-n-mouth disease it was back and forth and all around the two ('s & mine) offices.. Was a miserable couple of months.. and I still get everything brought into 's office, whether he gets it or not.. to paraphrase Sam Cooke's song.. he Brings it on Home to Me!..Here's to hoping for a virus free winter for all of us..HUGS|)onna

Our son next door kept getting pneumoina and so did everyone else. Finally I said I am coming over with the Lysol and we are wiping down EVERYTHING!!! I wiped down exactly that. Figurines, window sills, fridge, washing machine, etc. and anything that couldn't be wiped down got sprayed with Lysol spray. It finally ended them all being sick. Plus it was in the winter and I said everyone upstairs till I am done down here. I opened every window downstairs and between the Lysol and the freezing cold temperature I think I froze what germs wrere left!! After that I tackled the upstairs.

I don't

remember how early I had Bud off baby formula, but I remember

Earl was off formula before he was six months old.. ended up

with him on 2% milk though because he had, and still does, an

allergy to whole milk.. not severe just those little pimply

things on his arms and chest.. switched him to 2% and he's been

fine since.. If they are getting the nutrients that they need

from other things formula is more convenience than necessity..

Earl was a riot though.. from the time he came home from the

hospital, he was his "daddy's boy".. he woke every morning to

see his daddy off to work... (so I was like a banshee trying to

fix Bill's breakfast, make his coffee, pack his lunch AND get

the bottle & cereal ready for Earl at the same time).. and

then the boy's eyes opened at 3 o'clock in the afternoon..

daddy's quitting time.. and he did NOT go back to sleep until he

spent time with his daddy in the evening.. He was in the

hospital with brochiolitis (that virus and a gastroenteritis

were going round in babies and small children that year).. and I

was walking the floors with him until 10 at night.. if his dad

didn't come visit him directly after work.. Couldn't get him to

sleep until I was able to raise Bill on the phone, and put the

phone to the babies ear.. and then he'd fall directly asleep

while his dad talked to him on the phone.. Go Figure!

back in the day - late 60's they had plastic syringes -

jumbo size for formula and cereal for babies - by the time my

oldest was six months old he always woke up for "Dark Shadows"

and I better have the 3 syringes ready to go - he was hungry -

he was a premie and was eating fruit with his formula at 3

weeks - didn't tell the docs though

did the same thing with his brother

a year later he would grab a green bean or french fry off

my plate and gum it into submission

my grand daughter is tiny and skinny - doctors are into

starving kids again

My son got pissed at me when I told him in exasperation to

look in his baby book and see when I started him (MS memory

again) - he got pissed and didn't call for 6 months

feed the kid and make sure their tummies are full and they

will sleep and get strong

God, grant me the strength of eagles wings,

the faith and courage to fly to new heights,

and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there.

Re: Donna....Re: "Cures" and remedies for a cold,

Sharon,

Well the Graham Cracker thing.. My mother brought my

cousin home from the hospital as a newborn.. (long

ugly story behind that one, but his mother died

shortly after he was born).. the doctor's were

actually sending him home to die, because he

wouldn't put on any weight or anything, and they had

no clue as to why (this was 1948 or 49).. My mother

talked to one of my dad's aunts who had a son that

was exactly the same way when he was born.. in the

mid 20's.. (he grew into a tall strapping man).. and

the aunt told her that she fed him the graham

crackers every couple of hours.. and he began to

thrive.. So my mom did the same thing with my

cousin.. and by the time they went in to see the

doctor in a week or so.. he had put on weight and

the doctor was amazed.. and he told my mother, he

hadn't expected to see them for a baby visit, he

expected the little boy to die.. (same theory worked

on Zucco when we got him too.. fed and watered him

little bits every two hours.. until he could keep it

all down, then added a bit more and a bit more.. and

now the horse weighs 76 pounds!.. the vet didn't

expect to see him again either)..

My mother would listen to my first sister-in-law and

brother whine about the baby not sleeping more than

2 hours at a clip, and then being fussy all the time

when she was awake.. Mom kept telling SIL to FEED

the baby, she was hungry, and SIL refused cause the

doctor said no.. and SIL also kept that baby on the

rigid every 4 hour feeding schedule.. no giving her

a bottle in between or anything.. Well.. I remember,

mom was babysitting.. and she didn't have time for

the SIL's nonsense.. the minute, or shortly after

they left.. mom took out the graham crackers.. mixed

up a bowl of "cereal" consistency mush for her.. fed

the baby.. who smacked her lips and opened up her

mouth like a hungry little bird.. One her belly was

full.. she went right off to sleep, and stayed that

way.. woke for a bit while getting her ready to go

home, but continued to sleep, and then slept for a

few more hours after she got home.. SIL called

pissed to the MAX.. wanting to know what my mom did

to her baby.. Mom just told her.. the baby was

hungry so I FED her.. try it sometime.. SIL soon

learned my mother just wasn't as dumb as she

believed her to be.. and that her pediatrician

wasn't as smart as she believed him to be..

I never had a problem with either of the boys..

started feeding them something other than formula

from the day we came home.. doctor's change their

opinions of how to feed a newborn every couple of

years.. so I just went with what was tried and

true.. if the baby is hungry FEED IT.. Earl started

sleeping the whole night through by the time he was

six weeks old.. Unseasoned mashed potatoes, baby

cereal.. but the graham cracker thing was always

around.. as well.. then I didn't have to deal with

constipation.. And yup.. I had to cut a cross in a

couple of his nipples as well.. for him to be able

to suck the cereal through the nipple.. DARN.. do

you realize just how wealthy one of us would be had

we thought to start manufacturing those nipples???

my son - older one - was a volunteer fireman for years - my grandson went through a phase when he would play "Backdraft" until he wore our two tapes

when my son had a night call out he couldn't understand why he couldn't go with daddy

when my oldest one was a single - 9 years and 6 weeks between my two sons- he woke me up screaming in my ear at 0700 hours - seems daddy had taken his jeep and tank to the reserve center for show and tell and didn't tell him

first he had to find my glasses and then the phone - I called out to the Reserve center and told them to relay a message - NOW - daddy didn't have permission to take his sons toys and he better bring them home at lunch or I was bringing Bobby out to the center to retreave it

since I had worked to after 11 pm the night before I wasn't too happy

the toys - rather large ones were promptly returned after lunch

the mistake was not repeated again

they had gone from being infantry ("grunts") to tankers - my ex was field artillery God, grant me the strength of eagles wings, the faith and courage to fly to new heights, and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there.

SIL soon learned my mother just wasn't as dumb as she believed her to be.. and that her pediatrician wasn't as smart as she believed him to be.. I never had a problem with either of the boys.. started feeding them something other than formula from the day we came home.. doctor's change their opinions of how to feed a newborn every couple of years.. so I just went with what was tried and true.. if the baby is hungry FEED IT.. Earl started sleeping the whole night through by the time he was six weeks old.. Unseasoned mashed potatoes, baby cereal.. but the graham cracker thing was

always around.. as well.. then I didn't have to deal with constipation.. And yup.. I had to cut a cross in a couple of his nipples as well.. for him to be able to suck the cereal through the nipple.. DARN.. do you realize just how wealthy one of us would be had we thought to start manufacturing those nipples??? HUGS|)onna

To: MSersLife Sent: Thu, November 11, 2010 11:47:31 AMSubject: Re: "Cures" and remedies for a cold, etc......Re: AkibaI'm happy to hear that your daughter-in-law survived the killer sore throat, though I'm also thinking that you guys weren't tremendously thrilled with being cooped up "indoors" with

her during her treatment period.. LOL... I LOVE garlic, though I'm not so sure I'd be wanting to drink a "tea" made from it.. and tells me, if Earl or I are doing the cooking, that he'll make me up a bed on the porch if I eat that.. LOL.. Home remedies actually seem to work better than modern medicine at times.. had a really really.. well probably his first bout with pneumonia one winter.. and he would NOT go to the doctor.. so I made up a mustard plaster for his chest.. didn't have dried mustard powder stuff.. so substituted bottled mustard.. It, surprisingly, worked!!.. I still can't imagine using the onion cough syrup type thing though.. I do know that an onion cut in half and placed over a bee sting (wasp, hornet type sting) will draw the venom out of the sting if you get to it immediately.. or fairly soon after the sting.. and hornet venom when absorbed by the onion, will turn that spot of the onion black..Always

kept Graham Crackers on hand when the boys were babies and toddlers.. they will resolve constipation for a baby within an hour or so.. just have to crush them up and mix them into the formula in a consistency that the baby can swallow.. (newborn, has to be extremely thin that can be sucked through a nipple where as a baby who has started on strained stuff can actually have a baby cereal consistency).. but that something I learned from my mother as well.. newborns who aren't sleeping 4 hours between feedings.. just aren't getting enough in their tummies (usually).. and if given some substance in their stomach, will sleep for four or more hours.. doesn't hurt them.. none of the children given this developed allergies to anything.. even if the doctor doesn't like the idea... keeps them regular comfortable and happy little creatures.. LOLHUGS|)onna

To: MSersLife Sent: Thu, November 11, 2010 6:16:51 AMSubject: Re: AkibaThat certainly sounds better than what tells me his mother made for them when they were kids... not sure if it's an old Lithuanian cure or what... But she'd chop up onions, put them in a bowl, completely cover them with sugar, then put something HEAVY on top of that mixture in the bowl.. that will somehow

"juice" up.. and she'd ladle that into them by the tablespoons... Personally I think it SCARED the cold out of them.. LOL..HUGS|)onna

I always make my own recipe of "Cold Cure"-- a mix of orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime juices. I swear it will cure what ails ya:)

You're

right nne..

It wasn't until my boss laid in disinfectant spray for the

keyboards on the computers.. and then a HUGE bottle of Alcohol

to wipe down the telephone mouth piece when each person was done

with the phone, before someone else started using it.. and of

course in 's office they had the spray for the keyboard as

well.. that we ended up finally shaking it so that everyone

finally got over the grungies.. and Dianne announced "For

GOODNESS sake.. If you're sick.. stay the heck home for a day or

two!".. I even brought in a bottle of Germ-X for my hands and a

cannister of those Clorox Wipes and kept them on my desk.. LOL

Our son next door kept getting pneumoina and so did everyone

else. Finally I said I am coming over with the Lysol and we are

wiping down EVERYTHING!!! I wiped down exactly that. Figurines,

window sills, fridge, washing machine, etc. and anything that

couldn't be wiped down got sprayed with Lysol spray. It finally

ended them all being sick. Plus it was in the winter and I said

everyone upstairs till I am done down here. I opened every

window downstairs and between the Lysol and the freezing cold

temperature I think I froze what germs wrere left!! After that I

tackled the upstairs.

Earl's

favorite was Kenny "Six Pack".. and every one in the

house knew that movie line for line.. and yup.. he wore out the

video tape.. At 28, still claims it as his favorite.. and I'm

thinking the we still knew it word for word when we found it in

bits & pieces on YouTube a year or so ago..

Bud went through a phase with firetrucks & helmet.. and he

had a siren down perfect.. actually had a 60 plus year old man

running from the back yard to the front, looking for the fire

engines.. with just his voice making the siren sounds..

Wish the kids would have been as much fun way back when, as the

memories of those times are now.. LOL

my son - older one - was a volunteer fireman for years - my

grandson went through a phase when he would play "Backdraft"

until he wore our two tapes

when my son had a night call out he couldn't understand why

he couldn't go with daddy

when my oldest one was a single - 9 years and 6 weeks

between my two sons- he woke me up screaming in my ear at 0700

hours - seems daddy had taken his jeep and tank to the reserve

center for show and tell and didn't tell him

first he had to find my glasses and then the phone - I

called out to the Reserve center and told them to relay a

message - NOW - daddy didn't have permission to take his sons

toys and he better bring them home at lunch or I was bringing

Bobby out to the center to retreave it

since I had worked to after 11 pm the night before I wasn't

too happy

the toys - rather large ones were promptly returned after

lunch

the mistake was not repeated again

they had gone from being infantry ("grunts") to tankers -

my ex was field artillery

God, grant me the strength of eagles wings,

the faith and courage to fly to new heights,

and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there.

it is doubly precious to me - I can't remember - and then something triggers and they flood back

when my grandson was born in 1990 - I had a mental block about what happened his first three years - major amnesia from the abuse from his sperm donor that I made the mistake of marrying in 1967

twenty years of blank memory and then it flooded back - good friends helped me through it

then the MS took memories away again - remembering later - probably won't remember anything - but for now - this minute I have the memory God, grant me the strength of eagles wings, the faith and courage to fly to new heights, and the wisdom to rely on his spirit to carry me there.

Steve has been asked to use disinfectant before he comes into the house. He has been a carrier of every virus that comes to his work. I never use to get sick all that much in prior years, but it seems like I catch everything now. Then it takes weeks to get over it. I even think "whatever" has been staying with me at a low level all the time now because I always feel like I'm coming down with something.

Hugs and Love, Jackie
