Hi All,I need your brains to help figure out a new, dramatic change in my 5 year old's behavior. For months, he has been going to bed on his own without any problems. I would tuck him in and then go to his little sister's room to stay with her until she sleeps (she doesn't fall asleep on her own yet;).As of a couple of days ago, he has become very anxious and OCD about going to bed. He cannot stay in his bed and comes into my daughter's room obsessively. When I ask him to be quiet and not say anything he cannot. He keeps saying he has to go to the bathroom (we go and then he immediately has to go again)....he says this over and over and gets very upset. He cannot control his urge to get out of bed, ask to go the potty or not talk.I am trying to pinpoint the culprit. I was thinking strep/Pandas, Phenols, virus, new supplement or food infraction. Here is a quick time line of events:Friday: party at our house with kids -- possibility he ate something with gluten/casein without us knowing. Guest guest
Have you changed the diet recently?A lot of what you are describing would fall into what we would call " dumping " on the low oxalate list.Something that might cause regressions in behavior and biological symptoms could be taking away nuts, soy, or spinach. ??? Guest guest
Thank you Channa, is, Ruth, Toni, Gayle, Eileen, and (sorry if i forgot someone!!) for all of your great ideas!!Channa, I don't remember the diarrhea smelling terribly bad. I am planning to order some culturelle on Monday (this will be a new one for us) so I will try that. I do have some goldenseal but my kids have done really poorly on most naturals -- will have to think about this one (too scared at the moment). Will order the CP 11 strain too.is, I had ruled out clostridia because he is not acting the same as he did this summer (and the poop is not dark as usual with clostridia) but i suppose it is possible that it is a milder clostridia flare (oh, i was hoping to not go back to that one soon). He is has been on Nystatin since mid december i think and Candidase since late december. My son's ALT and AST have been elevated (60 and 65 at the last test) and we are not sure why. Took out Enhansa and they are coming down. Just lowered liverlife too (even though it is supposed to help the liver, the dr. thought it could cause problems)...will have to do viral hepatitis and some other tests soon....anyway, we cant start any antibs/systemic antifungals at the moment. We do have regular epsom salts baths so will keep that up.Ruth, I think the diarrhea he had on Sat/sun could have been his "flu"...my daughter showed it differently in her lungs. My son often does not have coughs and actually since he and I had a really bad "bronchitis" that lasted 2 months when he was two, i dont remember him getting too many coughs...i think this is one of his biggies too -- a chronic infection in his lungs that he has never kicked. I have brought this up with DANs but dont know how to treat that one (LDN, valtrex, IVIG, this new treatment is is mentioning??).Toni, thank you for the new info on the oxolate dumping. I will have to think about that. We havent taken anything away but since you mention soy i am wondering if his reaction could be to some waffles i gave them (not sure when) that contained soy (i had forgotten this)....in the past, they havent been very reactive to soy but i am guessing this can change....maybe it is this...Eileen, we were planning to trial 5HTP soon anyway so hope this helps (i think it is an herbal though?). He takes 2 tsp a day of the Nordic Naturals ProEFA -- over 1200 EPA.Gayle and others, what do you use to treat strep/PANDAS?, I hadnt thought of uti. I can easily rule that one out (or in). Parasites have always been on my mind too. We havent treated yet for that. I mentioned treating with our Dan at our last appt and she thought he is too sensitive right now for treatment (apparently parasite cleanses are rough on the bodies??).Hope we get it figured out shortly!!Many thanks, From: Channa Brennon To: "mb12valtrex " <mb12valtrex > Sent: Friday, January 27, 2012 10:36 PM Subject: Re: Fw: HELP: new nighttime anxiety and OCD! -- forgot daughter with flu how did the diahreah smell? not to be gross but really bad smelly poop would be a sign of bacteria overload....can your son take naturals? maybe try a week of goldenseal...up the culturelle at same time...if that helps then you know it was bacteria To: "mb12valtrex " <mb12valtrex > Sent: Friday, January 27, 2012 9:10 PMSubject: Fw: HELP: new nighttime anxiety and OCD! -- forgot daughter with flu I forgot to mention, my daughter has had what appears to be croup turning into a nasty cough/flu/bronchitis which started on Sun....my son has not had the cough....just the diareah on Sat/Sun. ----- Forwarded Message -----To: "mb12valtrex " <mb12valtrex > Sent: Friday, January 27, 2012 9:05 PMSubject: HELP: new nighttime anxiety and OCD! Guest guest
- the chronic cough makes me think of mycoplasma pneumonia. And the symptoms sound very much like pandas (www.pandaslink.com). You could ask doc to check titers (IgG & IgM) or strep and myco p just to make sure. Also, they could check ASO & AntiDnase for strep as well. And if you want you could also check for common beepers viruses like hhb6 & cmv. If you see increased emotional lability, separation anxiety, OCD, fears, etc these are all classic signs of pandas. Hope all returns to normal soon, Ruth. Guest guest
, my son is older, 18 now, but we've been at this a long time. My son, as Ruth suggested, is positive for strep AND myco p. The latter wasn't discovered until our last awful exacerbation but that knowledge can make a world of difference in treatment options if you go the antibiotic route. My son never did well on abx, they tore his already torn gut to a place I wasn't sure he'd recover from (and actually its the last piece to come back together). We live, swear by and will not be without Olive Leaf Extract...with a high percentage of oleuropein (the active ingredient in OLE). In addition, exceptional probiotics, MB12, folapro, magnesium, vit c and a consistent dose of melatonin at night....which will help with that bedtime ocd/anxiety. Best wishes to you. Guest guest
Thank you Gayle, Ruth and ! This has all been very helpful. I am definitely thinking this could be strep/PANDAS and i doubt this is the first episode. I remember about a year ago this time that he started a jaw tic that lasted months after an illness plus he had more anxiety then. I have the OLE on board but will be ordering new probiotics soon and looking into melatonin too (he had a hard time falling asleep again tonight and that hasnt been a problem in a long time)....not sure on the antibiotic at this time but will ask our dr. about it and all the titers, cultures to run....i am afraid that an antib will make his clostridia flare and I/we do not want the clostridia beast again.Thank you again!! Guest guest
Hi ,Is chlostidia yeast.? And if so,what did u use to help with?I will buy the olive leaf, trying diff things right now,hi dose biotin, zinc and now trying calcium for behaviours off the wall, jumping, hyper, darting, ace stuff, biting, chewing clothes, metal hair..What is adv stuff u mentioned?SandiSent from my iPad Hi sandi,We use the now brand olive leaf glycerite. Haven't decided yet what we will do for strep/pandas. Ordering culturelle and thinking about goldenseal (channa's rec). We will probably not do antibs either unless there is a positive throat culture....if I remember correctly our dr recommended adv biocidin this summer for strep while my son was on nystatin. He had the worst clostridia flare putting him back a year in language, cognition and behavior so we have to be very careful with clostridia flares and balancing the tummy bugs.Hope this helps!-- Sent from my Palm Pre ,what brand of olive leaf extract do you use?..also,what do u use for PANDAS?My son was supp red for this without doing strep titre, and given hi dose antib which made issues worse and I do not want to do anymore antib.SandiSent from my iPad Thank you Gayle, Ruth and ! Guest guest
My son has been having much of the same issues. Does not want to go to sleep, gets out of his bed and bolts in my room. He also has been having red lips and today a red cheeks. No fever though. The last time he had the red scaly lips was Jan. 13. With the red lips comes very regressive behavior. Uncontrollable, OCD, Zoned out, hitting, kicking and really fidgety. Any clues what this could be? Guest guest
Hi Kerri,For us, the uncontrollable, zoned out, hitting, kicking and fidgety is more clostridia and yeast behaviors. I can comment on the red lips...and OCD (strep? but I am also thinking OCD comes with clostridia too?). Guest guest
Again, we say oxalate here. But " oxalate dumping " and " PANDAS flares " look a lot alike. Owens (oxalate project for ARI) believes that perhaps some of the oxalate crystals thatform trap strep bacteria and it allows the strep to " hide " out till oxalate is being dumped. I think she says they proved that for another type of bacteria but never looked at strep + oxalate.Dumping makes my daughter sound sensitive and tic-y. It makes my son irrational, aggressive.Makes me sound sensitive and irritable. The dry peeling lips is an oxalate dumping sign too but also B vitamin deficiency,I think biotin and riboflavin, not completely sure. I know WIKI has a good decription of vitamin B def. symptoms. Guest guest
Thanks for the info! I will look into it. My son recently had labs and one of the tests checked his B12 level. His B12 blood analysis was extremely high at 3963 with the norm range b/t 211-900. This was after stopping B12 injections four weeks before the labs. He did B12 inj for two and a half years. I stopped it on my own because I sensed something was not right. Wonder if the B12 could make him deficient on B vit.1-9's. I will ask our doc about this next week. Puzzling! I will pay attention to the oxalates. The only thing I will be cutting out will be spinach, zuchinni and carrots that I chop up really fine and cook to add to just about everything he eats. Guest guest
, Yes, I am sure he is yeasty right now. Waiting to see a new doc next week and do not want to start on anti-fungal before a long trip/flight and risk die off reactions during an already difficult schedule change. Also, want to do things in right order for the NIDS protocol. Soooo ready for next Tuesday!
