The " nice " thing about low oxalate diet is it is NOT one you do at once.Cutting out spinach should be adequate to help. You may be able to replaceit with arugala, which is a little spicier but I find arugala + romaine makes a very pretty salad

and one that replaced my " mixed green + spinach " one well. ;-)Shredded carrots on salad would prob be ok, just not " unmonitored snacking " or by the bag full, knowwhat I mean? Also, canned carrots are low/med so if they are a fav, canned is ok...

and boiling (not steaming or microwaving or baking) pulls a lot of oxalate out (but also vitamins)in the water, so that could help if you throw the water out. But again no need to make a bunch of changesall at once, the spinach removal/reduction is probably ok.

Kerri, sorry I can't always keep everyone straight, did you mention doing Yasko testing? My son and I also have high B12 levels, and I have them even if I do NOT supp;we both have MTHFR issues. I am not sure if my daughters levels are high on b12.

Maybe the high b12 level is an indication that the body is not able to use it well???Were your b12 the methyl variety?

Thanks for the info!  I will look into it.  My son recently had labs and one of the tests checked his B12 level.  His B12 blood analysis was extremely high at 3963 with the norm range b/t 211-900.  This was after stopping B12 injections four weeks before the labs.  He did B12 inj for two and a half years.  I stopped it on my own because I sensed something was not right.  Wonder if the B12 could make him deficient on B vit.1-9's.  I will ask our doc about this next week.  Puzzling!  I will pay attention to the oxalates.  The only thing I will be cutting out will be spinach, zuchinni and carrots that I chop up really fine and cook to add to just about everything he eats.

Again, we say oxalate here. But " oxalate dumping " and " PANDAS flares " look a lot alike. Owens (oxalate project for ARI) believes that perhaps some of the oxalate crystals thatform trap strep bacteria and it allows the strep to " hide " out till oxalate is being dumped.

I think she says they proved that for another type of bacteria but never looked at strep + oxalate.Dumping makes my daughter sound sensitive and tic-y. It makes my son irrational, aggressive.Makes me sound sensitive and irritable.

The dry peeling lips is an oxalate dumping sign too but also B vitamin deficiency,I think biotin and riboflavin, not completely sure. I know WIKI has a good decription of vitamin B def. symptoms.

My son has been having much of the same issues.  Does not want to go to sleep, gets out of his bed and bolts in my room.  He also has been having red lips and today a red cheeks.  No fever though.  The last time he had the red scaly lips was Jan. 13.  With the red lips comes very regressive behavior. Uncontrollable, OCD, Zoned out, hitting, kicking and really fidgety.  Any clues what this could be?

Kerry - I have heard that high b12 means that they r not methyl aging well. Instead of converting the b12 into the methylated form, it builds up. Not sure but something to check into. Ruth Sent from my iPhone

Wow! This is so hard to figure out. I am always searching for answers. It really helps to know we are not alone. Also, the lips cleared up in three days and behaviors got better which suggests viruses to me. However, it could very well be bacterial. It just creeps up and down every three weeks.

Toni,

Ok, I see what you mean by cutting down and replacing. I will take that advice. As for the B12, yes it was the trio, Methyl B12/folinic/acetylcysteine injection. Does this make a difference. Thanks for the great information! I really appreciate it!

I used Almond and rice milk at one time and decided to give it up all together since it did not support any nutritional value. Too much sugar. I started adding water to the milk in small amounts until he did not want it anymore. He has not drank milk in a year. Not to steal Toni's spotlight:)

Kerri

Toni,

Thank you for the info on MTHFR. This makes tons of sense! This explains the high levels of B12 since they are not used by cells because the mechanism if shut down. I also read that with the MTHFR mutation, your child should not have anesthesia. In a 2003 case, a child suffered neurololgical deterioration after anesthesia with nitrous oxide and eventually died the second time she underwent the anesthesia. This explains my son's severe regression after surgery at 12 mo. Before the surgery, he showed no symtoms. This may also explain why symptoms occur in some children after immunizations. I can not thank you enough for leading me to this. Is your child a patient of Yasko? Is she in ME? I am considering making an appt. with her.

Thanks again,

Kerri

Also, canned carrots are low/med so if they are a fav, canned is ok...and boiling (not steaming or microwaving or baking) pulls a lot of oxalate out (but also vitamins)in the water, so that could help if you throw the water out. But again no need to make a bunch of changesall at once, the spinach removal/reduction is probably ok.Kerri, sorry I can't always keep everyone straight, did you mention doing Yasko testing? My son and I also have high B12 levels, and I have them even if I do NOT

supp;we both have MTHFR issues. I am not sure if my daughters levels are high on b12.Maybe the high b12 level is an indication that the body is not able to use it well???Were your b12 the methyl variety?

But "oxalate dumping" and "PANDAS flares" look a lot alike. Owens (oxalate project for ARI) believes that perhaps some of the oxalate crystals thatform trap strep bacteria and it allows the strep to "hide" out till oxalate is being dumped.I think she says they proved that for another type of bacteria but never looked at strep + oxalate.Dumping makes my daughter sound sensitive and tic-y.

Personally, I would rather supplement calcium (which I am not doing at the present) than give him the extra sugar intake from almond or rice milk. Where we are right now, with all of the inflammation, I stopped all supplementation because it was causing stomach upset and due to the inflammation, his body was not absorbing the vitamins. However, I do believe the liquid vitamins are more bio-available to their bodies. After his inflammation comes down, we will start back with a simple liquid multi-vitamin that includes calcium. I get our compounding pharmacy to custom make his liquid vit.

Thanks Kerri. Can the kids have problems with low calcium without the almond/rice milk/dairy?

Kerri

hi Toni,

While we're on oxalates topics...what do you give to your kids as a milk replacement? I have been giving almond milk but am wondering if this could be part of their oxalate issues. Any advice?

Many thanks,

Toni,

Ok, I see what you mean by cutting down and replacing. I will take that advice. As for the B12, yes it was the trio, Methyl B12/folinic/acetylcysteine injection. Does this make a difference. Thanks for the great information! I really appreciate it!

Kerri,Have you tried OLE? It's a reverse transcriptase inhibitor and effects bacteria for some. This has been a really good herb for our son. Just sharing a thought,Sent from my iPhone

Wow! This is so hard to figure out. I am always searching for answers. It really helps to know we are not alone. Also, the lips cleared up in three days and behaviors got better which suggests viruses to me. However, it could very well be bacterial. It just creeps up and down every three weeks.

Kerri,

Our son had same- elevated ( actually too high to be measured) b12 levels after 6 weeks of being off of the shots. Someone suggested some bacteria let off B12. I've not had time to research so I hardly know if it's true but wanted to mention.

Have you changed the diet recently?A lot of what you are describing would fall into what we would call "dumping" on the low oxalate list.Something that might cause regressions in behavior and biological symptoms could be taking away nuts, soy, or spinach.???

I forgot to mention, my daughter has had what appears to be croup turning into a nasty cough/flu/bronchitis which started on Sun....my son has not had the cough....just the diareah on Sat/Sun.

----- Forwarded Message -----To: "mb12valtrex " <mb12valtrex > Sent: Friday, January 27, 2012 9:05 PMSubject: HELP: new nighttime anxiety and OCD!

Hi All,

I need your brains to help figure out a new, dramatic change in my 5 year old's behavior. For months, he has been going to bed on his own without any problems. I would tuck him in and then go to his little sister's room to stay with her until she sleeps (she doesn't fall asleep on her own yet;).

As of a couple of days ago, he has become very anxious and OCD about going to bed. He cannot stay in his bed and comes into my daughter's room obsessively. When I ask him to be quiet and not say anything he cannot. He keeps saying he has to go to the bathroom (we go and then he immediately has to go again)....he says this over and over and gets very upset. He cannot control his urge to get out of bed, ask to go the potty or not talk.

I am trying to pinpoint the culprit. I was thinking strep/Pandas, Phenols, virus, new supplement or food infraction. Here is a quick time line of events:

Friday: party at our house with kids -- possibility he ate something with gluten/casein without us knowing. I found out later some of the older kids had opened their chips bags and left them on the counter. He was also given strawberries without his Nophenol

Sat: watery diarrhea (greenish - viral?)

Sun: diarrhea but better

Mon: Peeing alot. Started Lithium oratate (balance mood, behavior)

Tues: Stopped Liverlife

Wed: weepy and frustrated at times. Started the above OCD/anxious night time behavior. Pooped on bedroom floor.

Thurs: Stopped Lithium Oratate. Same behavior as Wed.

Fri: Same night time behavior as Wed and Thurs. Restarted low dose Liverlife.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts!! Bedtime is becoming a nightmare!

Many thanks,
