Pass it around. The policy is new and has changed recently so be careful at the holidays. I understand the outrage of this man. Snopes confirms this: http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/restock.asp BEST BUY If you purchase something from Wal-Mart, Sears, etc. And you return the item with the receipt, they will give you your money back if you paid cash, or credit your account if paid by plastic. Well, I purchased a GPS for my car: a Tom Tom XL.S from 'Best Buy' They have a policy that it must be returned within 14 days for a refund! So after 4 days I returned it in the original box with all the items in the box, with paper work and cords all wrapped in the plastic.. Just as I received it, including the receipt. I explained to the lady at the return desk I did not like the way it couldn't find stored names.. The lady at the refund desk said, there is a 15% restock fee, for items returned. I said no one told me that. I asked how much would that be. She said it goes by the price of the item. It will be $45 for you. I said, all you're going to do is walk over and place it back on the shelf then charge me $45 of my money for restocking? She said that's the store policy. I said if more people were aware of it they would not buy anything here! If I bought a $2000 computer or TV and returned it I would be charged $300 restock fee? She said yes. 15%. I said OK, just give me my money minus the restock fee. She said, since the item is over $200 dollars, she can't give me my money back!Corporate has to and they will mail you a check in 7 to ten days.! I said 'WHAT?' It's my money! I paid in cash! I want to buy a different brand..Now I have to wait 7 to 10 days. She said well, our policy is on the back of your receipt. I said, do you read the front or back of your receipt? She said well, the front! I said so do I. I want to talk to the Manager! So the manager comes over, I explained everything to him, and he said, well, sir they should have told you about the policy when you got the item. I said, no one has ever told me about the check refund or restock fee when I bought items from computers to TVs from Best Buy. The only thing they ever discussed was the worthless extended warranty program. He said, well, I can give you corporate phone number. I called corporate. The guy said, well, I'm not supposed to do this but I can give you a 45 dollar gift card and you can use it at Best Buy. I told him if I bought something and returned it, you would charge me a restock fee on the item and then send me a check for the remaining 3 dollars. You can keep your gift card, I'm never shopping in Best Buy ever again, and if I'd been smart, I would have charged the whole thing on my credit card! Then I would have canceled the transaction. I would have gotten all my money back including your stupid fees! He didn't say a word! I informed him that I was going to e-mail my friends and give them a heads-up on the store's policy, as they don't tell you about all the little caveats. So please pass this on. Guest guest
OMG........this just happened to me from an online store that connects to Amazon.com. I bought a "vibrating watch" for my husband for Christmas a couple weeks ago. When I received it 2 weeks later it was not what I thought it was, very chinsy, and not a type he would wear. Too small, and for $75.00 I expected better quality. So I was instructed online to call them for a return number so I could print it out and put it on the package. While I was explaining to the rep why I was returning it, I mentioned it was a good thing I decided to return it now because if I would have waited until Christmas it would have been over the 30 days. Then I'd be stuck with it. She then told me that there would be a 25% restocking fee, and I said: " WHAT"???? I proceeded to very sternly say, you mean to tell me that its going to cost me 25% less of what I paid for this watch just to have someone put it back on the shelf"??? I told her it wasn't MY fault I didn't like the watch, plus I had to pay for the shipping both ways, and I didn't think it was right to have to pay such a high restocking fee on top of it. She put me on hold, and came back and said they would waive the fee. 'WHEW..."! But, I'll never buy from them again, which I didn't tell them that, but would have if they insisted I pay that fee. Another thing to watch out for is how long you have to send something back before it expires, because if you do your shopping online like I do it takes time to get it back to them, and they go by when you buy it to count towards the deadline. If you buy in Oct. for Christmas which I have done many times in the past years, and they have a 30 day return policy, then your out of luck if the item doesn't fit the person you got it for, for Christmas to be able to return it. If you wait to buy something closer to Christmas then you have to hope it gets to you in time. Hugs and Love, Jackie May the peace of God be with you...the love of Jesus enfold you...and the Spirit of Christ fill you. Guest guest
I have to say that this policy is not unique to Best Buy. Many electronics stores as well as computer stores have the same policy. There are a few people who will buy a video camera, for example, just because they want to use it one time for a wedding, or what have you. For example, a person would buy the video camera on Friday, use it at the wedding on Saturday, get the data imported to his or her computer on Sunday, then return it back to the store on Monday. The restock fee helps the store. How many times have you gone to a store and actually seen an electronics product reshelved in a package that has been stapled or taped shut? Most customers will avoid those packages that appear to have been opened. They avoid them like the plague. So, I can understand why stores do this. Once I bought a paper shredder at BiMart. It was on the small side; not nearly as big as the paper shredder that I had which died. When I got home, I plugged the shredder in and tried it out. It was really slow. I was okay with its slowness; but, the shredder was really loud. It was louder than my dead shredder. I would not be able to tolerate it for long. The next day, I was at Fred Meyer to get groceries. Out of curiosity, I went to look at the paper shredders. They had a shredder with twice the capacity of the one I bought at BiMart. Also, it did diamond cutting, which I like better than confetti cutting. I bought the diamond cut shredder from Fred Meyer and took the one I had got from BiMart back and got a full refund. I do not have the energy to run from store to store to check on prices. It's a bit easier if I do it on line; however, prices listed on line are often different from what I can find at the brick and mortar counterparts. Most stores who charge a restocking fee for electronics products will usually waive the restocking fees if the item is defective. If product works; but, doesn't work as expected or as promised on the packaging, does that mean the product gets charged the restocking fee?
