Guest guest
Donna....We've had about a half dozen members on this group who have had their emails hijacked. Several were inactive members and I tried to contact them but didn't get a response so I had to remove them from the group. I am an owner of our local freecycle group and it has hit several people there too. I've been trying to help one get rid of it and if you have any suggestions please let me know. I told her to change her passwords, run her virus software, a spyware detector, and then change her passwords again. But she is still having the same problem. Some mornings I'm dumber than dirt.. I do have all kinds of "protective" things running, so shouldn't have a problem with my mail being hi-jacked though.. PeerBlock is a great little program to have running in the background.. it's just additional protection.. that I keep running on all the machines here. HUGS |)onna I see 's email has been hijacked. I am going to put her on moderation until she can get it cleared up. WARNING: don't open the links that came from her address! hugs Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. I've had 1 friend and my nephews e-mail show up like this, and I deleted both and didn't open either one. Guest guest
Jackie, There are some virus' that do nothing more to the computer than hi-jack an email account.. actually they don't hi-jack the account so much as they steal all the information in the person's address book, thereby getting the email address of everybody in the address book, and then the stolen email information is used to pass the virus on to the people that were in the address book... (if opened, it's much like a chain letter.. in as.. 1 open, 6 emails go out to the people from the address book, if all 6 open it and have 6 people in their address book.. 6 more emails are sent.. and so on and so forth..) The email will look as if it came from the person whose address book info was stolen, so that the unsuspecting receiver will open the email, thus infecting themselves and propagating the spread of that particular virus.. IF you are running an anti-virus program (such as Avast!) and allow it to scan incoming emails you'd get a very strong warning about opening the suspect email.. heuristic warnings are something to heed, but not necessarily a "this email definitely contains a virus" type message.. [Thunderbird, itself has a few detections built in.. I'll see message like.. "we think this is spam".. "we think this could be a scam".. etc.] Mine is set up (and I can't remember if it came this way, or I checked something in configuration) to not load remote content of a message.. unless I say.. sure.. I trust this person, go ahead an load it.. or if I add the person to my address book, that's the same as me saying I trust this person, without me having to click on the button saying.. yup.. go ahead and load it.. Google this term, without the quotations: "email propagated virus". The second result titled 'Email Virus Propagation Modeling and Analysis'... Click on the little thing that sez "Quick View".. otherwise the website will want you to download and open a pdf file.. I prefer quick view as to actually downloading the pdf file to my computer and then opening it.. The abstract part of the paper, is fairly technical, though readable.. But starting at the "Introduction" part of the paper, from what I've skimmed, looks like it will explain a bit better than I could.. It does give a history of virii from the beginning of time.. <grin>.. But I'm pretty sure it will explain all this stuff better than I can in an email.. Hope this helps HUGS |)onna Does anyone know how someone can use your e-mail address to do this?
