Guest guest
I know, just know, there is someone out there who can explain this to me ... My daughter has Asperger's syndrome. She is thirteen years old. Each day she takes 12,000mcg. mB12 orally, 1,000mg. Valtrex (500mg. twice a day), a rotated strep-free probiotic, 4 NeuroProtek, (2 capsules, twice a day), 200mg. Minocycline (100mg. twice a day for acne), and an anti-yeast such as capryllic acid. Sometimes I throw in a B6 or P5P. She is also on a gluten/casein/soy/egg/preservative/dye-free diet for the past ten years. J. does not have celiac disease (had gene test). Brilliant progress when she went on the diet. Brilliant progress when mB12 added. Brilliant progress when Valtrex added. Brilliant progress when NeuroProtek added. Probiotic and anti-yeast are just maintenance. Nothing much happens when I add B6 or P5P. Earlier this week I added 500mg. Acetyl L-carnitine (250mg. twice daily). Wow! The fog is lifting. She is showing a facility and ease with language that is quite lovely. Seems more in-tune with social stuff. But why? Can anyone tell me? This is more than idle curiosity. J. just finished a three month trial on Ritalin, Concerta, and Vyvanse. They left her dazed and stupid and distressed with daily meltdowns and tantrums. She was focused on whatever floated in front of her and not able to think at all. I described it as like loosing 40 IQ points. She is not doing well at school and needs serious and immediate help to focus. I am supposed to be hunting for a psychiatrist to prescribe other meds, but I still believe that the answer lies with correcting deficiencies, not sedating her. A cogent explanation would help me focus on where to go next. Many thanks.
Guest guest
Carnitine helps with mitochondrial function. Has her FlGlu ever been tested? What did it look like? Carnitine is recommended in combination with B12 to improve mito function (folate and COQ10, as well.). Give the carnitine a few weeks and observe. If you continue to see results and you're not sure of mito function, I would go ahead and add the folate and observe. Does it get even better? Wait, then add COQ10. Good luck! -Tammy To: mb12valtrex Sent: Thursday, February 2, 2012 12:09 PM Subject: I Need A Genius Explanation or An Ingenious Explanation I know, just know, there is someone out there who can explain this to me ... Guest guest
ALCAR also crosses the blood brain barrier and is good at getting energy into the cells.Do you do CoQ10 too? It is supposed to pair well with ALCAR (acetyl-l-carnitine)B6 + magnesium is best, not just plain B6 and we didn't see much till we hit very large doses of B6. We are using like 500mg sustained release (Source Naturals) or sometimesSolaray Dual Release 50/50 (50 mg immediate release / 50 mg delayed release)You might want to search pubmed regarding ALCAR (or spell it out) and brain inflammation and other brain things like alzheimers. I am not saying asperger's is a form of alzheimers LOL I amjust saying that some of the memory enhancers used in alzheimer's have helped ADD/ADHD/Asperger's types. Some of the studies may have hypothesis on why/how it works :-) I know, just know, there is someone out there who can explain this to me ... My daughter has Asperger's syndrome. Guest guest
While we are discussing acetyl l carnitine, I wanted to ask all of you if you are supplementing coQ10 in the ubiquinol form or as ubiquinone(coq10)? My dan recommended ubiquinol which is the active form and since our kids overall have lots of messed up pathways, they don't efficiently convert coq10 to the active form ubiquinol. Normally, healthy young people should have no difficulty with the conversion and the process gets affected after age 40. So how is everyone supplementing the coq10? My son did great initially on l-carnitine. Then I stopped it as he was found to have elevated testosterone. When I tried to reintroduce it twice, he had an increase in tantrums. I have purchased acetyl l carnitine from klaire labs this time and want to give it a try. I have heard that a lot of kids get hyperactivity on acetyl l carnitine. Could it be related to untreated yeast or other issues and once those issues are taken care of, the child will respond to the carnitine? Input will be appreciated. is > > Has your daughter ever been tested for mitochondrial issues? Guest guest
My son is already ADHD but was mostly resolved while on B6 + mag. However when I added ALCAR, he was back to " nutso " lol meaning bouncing off the walls, no attention span. It was like he was before the B6 and mag. He has a seizure disorder and ALCAR has a cautionary warning in those with seizures. I guess b/c it crosses the BBB and may amplify electrical impulses??? I dunno. I stopped using it on my son but am thinking of using it on my hubby who is looking to clear some brain fog. I am thinking of switching brands of coq10 to Jarrow Qsorb, I thinkit's supposed to be better? We also use MRM coq10 w/ l-carn which is a liquid. I get a stomach ache after taking it, I think Alberta was saying the same... better with fatty meal I think. We are using l-carn rx. Toni, are you using coq10? Also did you ever try l-carnitine? Guest guest
I find L-carnitine better with carbs -- potatoes, pasta, rice...anything starchy, which my kids love. My son had major issues digesting carbs until I started giving L-carnitine with meals and then it worked awesome. With ALCAR, I find it works best when I give it with a nice fatty breakfast, but schedules don't always work out that way... (Because we had a hectic day yesterday and we had no fatty meal until dinner at 5:30...I gave it too late in the day and it's 2:30 AM and Miss Maia is hippity hoppity playing right now). I keep making the same stupid mistake all the time and I want to hold out for a fatty meal sometimes and it ends up I don't get it in her until too late. DOH! Guest guest
I agree with Melinda have a mitochondrial screening done. Sounds like you're on the right path with treatment. Here's more background information on Mitochondrial dysfunction and autism. Children With Autism Have Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Study Finds http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/11/101130161521.htm "Reduced mitochondrial enzyme function proved widespread among the autistic children. Eighty percent had lowered activity in NADH oxidase than did controls, while 60 percent, 40 percent and 30 percent had low activity in succinate oxidase, ATPase and cytochrome c oxidase, respectively. The researchers went on to isolate the origins of these defects by assessing the activity of each of the five enzyme complexes involved in mitochondrial respiration. Complex I was the site of the most common deficiency, found in 60 percent of autistic subjects, and occurred five out of six times in combination with Complex V. Other children had problems in Complexes III and IV." Guest guest
Toni, Jarrow Qsorb is ubiquinone which still needs to be converted to ubiquinol, the active form. But I noticed that most of our kids are using the ubiquinone and some parents are seeing very good results with that. I used Thorne's Q cell few months ago which is now called Q best. Then I got confused between ubiquinol and ubiquinone. I guess I will just get ubiquinone then as the only ubiquinol which has fish capsule is from Mercola and I am not sure how his products are. I don't give my son any bovine or porcine gel caps. If somebody has some experience with Mercola products, please share. is > > > > > > > > > > Has your daughter ever been tested for mitochondrial issues? Guest guest
oh forget my last post i got your answer here alberta..thanks! To: mb12valtrex Sent: Friday, February 3, 2012 2:35 AMSubject: Re: Re: I Need A Genius Explanation or An Ingenious Explanation I find L-carnitine better with carbs -- potatoes, pasta, rice...anything starchy, which my kids love. My son had major issues digesting carbs until I started giving L-carnitine with meals and then it worked awesome. With ALCAR, I find it works best when I give it with a nice fatty breakfast, but schedules don't always work out that way...(Because we had a hectic day yesterday and we had no fatty meal until dinner at 5:30...I gave it too late in the day and it's 2:30 AM and Miss Maia is hippity hoppity playing right now). I keep making the same stupid mistake all the time and I want to hold out for a fatty meal sometimes and it ends up I don't get it in her until too late. DOH! Guest guest
Do you know of good quality brand of Taurine that is not too expensive? Shirley To: mb12valtrex Sent: Friday, February 3, 2012 10:41 AMSubject: Re: I Need A Genius Explanation or An Ingenious Explanation Toni, Jarrow Qsorb is ubiquinone which still needs to be converted to ubiquinol, the active form. If somebody has some experience with Mercola products, please share.is> > > > >> > > > > Has your daughter ever been tested for mitochondrial issues?
