I'm not sure a friend has diabetes

A couple months ago I posted about a friend being diagnosed with diabetes.

She had a fasting of 142. A couple weeks later, I tested her more than 2

hours after lunch and she had a reading of 179.

Several weeks ago, she started testing and was getting great numbers

(between 80-115). I could not believe the breakfast she told me she had at

Cracker

Barrel (2 biscuits plus other food) and 1 1/2 hours later, a reading of 112.

Her doctor wanted her to attend classes. She called about the class and the

educator told her that a person needed to have 2 high fasting numbers to be

diagnosed. So last week, she went back for another fasting. It was 105. At

the time they did the fasting, they also did an A1c. The A1c was 7.2.

She was on prednisone for a couple of months and she also had an infection.

I am thinking that the prednisone and infection caused her higher numbers.

However, she knows she is a candidate for diabetes since it runs in her

family and she is much overweight. She has started losing weight and most of

the

time watching what she eats.

She is scheduled for another A1c in Sept. It will be interesting to see

what that number is.

Eunice: As you know, your friend is wise to begin watching now. You may

well be correct that the prednisone caused the higher numbers -- steroids

wreak havoc with my numbers, even when it's injected locally -- had that

done twice with my ankle and swore I'd NEVER do it again! Even my

podiatrist was surprised -- generally, localized injections don't do that --

lucky me!

Good luck to your friend -- perhaps she'll get a handle on things early

enough to never have to worry!

I've been on prednisone since 1992 and have had injections for the past 3

years. It is not an option for me to stop this. My drs have all agreed

that my 'pre-diabetes' or diabetes (there are those who say pre-diabetes is

like being a little bit pregnant), is caused by this. The only thing

recommended to me is to watch my diet carefully which I am doing and to

loose weight which I should have done before.

So much for that.....

An A1c of 7.2% is a plasma blood glucose level of 179 mg/dl. That is

diabetic.

Hi ,

I believe and the doctor believes this came from the prednisone and

infection. She has been getting terrific readings for the past month, nothing

over

115. She had a breakfast of eggs, potato casserole, 2 biscuits, one with

gravy and got a reading of 112 less than 2 hours later. Even later in the day

her bg's were normal.

She is keeping a close check on things and will get an A1c done again in

Sept.
