A happy 25th anniversary to Pat Elmes, Larry , Dale Gunnels, and me. 25

years ago we became paramedics. We're the only one left out of our class. It

only seems like yesterday a boy named Pat was playing Neil Young songs on his

guitar trying to pick up chicks.

Everyone else either went on to work in Wal-Mart's, are currently confined in

Turkish prisons, or became RNs. To me, our profession has really not changed

that much over 25 years. In some ways one may consider that good in other ways

not so good. In most professions 25 years is a nice moderate time spent, in EMS

it's considered an old-timer. Here's to 25 more years you old grunts!!!!

Hey Mike and all --

My apologies for not following Rule #1 when sending messages......... " don't

be dealing with your 7 year old at the same time one is sending an email and

one's message might have better spelling and clearer sentence structure. " Oh

well..........I can always fall back to the " I'm blonde " routine if all else

fails.

Again.........congrats to you guys!!

What ever happened to the " Dinosaurus Medicus " list or something like

that? It would be nice to see all the names on the list, with the

current inductees added.

Congrats to all four. Making it in EMS 25 years or longer is a milestone

to be celebrated.

Congrats gentlemen.

I too graduated from TSTI in Sweetwater, in August 1983. C.L. Meeks was the

instructor. Worked 48 hours on and 48 hours off with Abilene EMS. On my days off

it was paramedic school, rotations and frosty beverages.

Miss those Days. The place you worked were your friends and your family.

Congrats guys!

This time in 1981 I was in the second week of my Paramedic Course at UTHSC

Houston. Gene Weatherall was the principle instructor.

We spent 160 hours in class over 4 weeks, did a month of ER time at Ben Taub,

and then worked 10 24-hour shifts with HFD. I had 172 patient contacts at

the end of my training and I sat for the exam in July of 1981. The whole

course was 400 hours and we used Caroline's Emergency Care in the Streets. I

still have my copy.

Now, my basic EMT students know most of the didactic stuff I knew then, and

they now can give Epi by EpiPen, do albuterol nebs, and put in Combitubes,

Kings, and LMAs. Paramedic courses now average around 1200 hours and cover a

slew of stuff we never thought about then.

Yet, what I learned back then has served me well as a foundation for learning

We EMS Mossbacks had it better than we knew.

Let's hear from some of the other Dinosaurs. We really should have a Dino

Reunion.

I finally found the link although it doesn't work now:

http://users.computron.net/dinerman/DinosaurusMedicus/DinosaurusMe

Apparently Terry Dinerman owned the page. I hope he can ressurrect

the page, or maybe start a new one? Can DSHS come up with a new

feature in the EMS Messenger to highlight those who have been in the

state EMS system for 25 or 30 years(whatever the predetermined time

is)?

Seems like it would be nice to recognize our EMS dinosaurs as such.

Lord knows they haven't done it for the pay.

,

I was hired by Bob Kellow at Ray Crowder as an EMT and decided not to take

the job after seeing the bullet proof glass around dispatch in the basement

of the Funeral Home. The good old days.....We should hold the Dino Medic

reunion at EMStock.
