Guest guest
Wow I thought I was old. EMT Basic 1977, EMT Paramedic 1980. My Paramedic class was the first to be conducted here in Wichita Falls. We used the Caroline 2 book series, I believe they called it the beta set. I still have it on my book self. It always reminds me of where I come from. I am still enjoying the streets but retirement sure is looking good right now after 32 years. I agree with Bernie we should do a reunion at EMStock. Guest guest
Do I qualify with my strange route? EMT-B at Baylor in Dallas Jan 1982, worked part-time for Professional Ambulance in Dallas (got my 15 min of fame picking up bodies for ME office and at Cowboy games). Paramedic class in Terrell finished in 1984. My renewed patch expired in 1992 while I was a resident in Missouri and Ohio. NREMT *%$@*^'s would not let me take the tests because I had expired a few weeks before I met them while I was administering skills exams for Columbus FD. Finally became an EMS medical director in Missouri in 2001 and moved back home to Texas in 2003. Guest guest
I was in the first paramedic class at Tarrant County Junior College in 1975-1976 with Duane Selman, , Bill , Workman, Barnhart, , and Don (among others). Joann was the instructor. There was no Caroline then-we used the mimeographed (remember mimeographs) version of her book from the DOT. At the time, LVNs could not start IVs and a revolt ensued when they heard the ambulance drivers would be in the ER to learn to start IVs. They delayed our clinical until the LVNs had been trained in IVs. We had no place to do our field internships (Dallas Fire would not let non-fire paramedics ride) and a federal grant paid for half the class to go to Inglewood, California and Seattle, Washington for our field internships. I went to Seattle. Half the folks who went to California stayed (at least for a few years) and worked in Los Angeles County and Marin County. They were the first non-fire paramedics (Bill and ) Los Angeles County ever certified. Guest guest
There has always been a good ambulance trash contingent at EMStock. We can make most wheel-chair and handi-van accessible and we can hire guards to cover those who remain incarcerated. Let's have Skip Straus " Chaplain Skip " come for stories of his Fort Worth ambulance days before he found religion and CISM. We can make the members of his flock blush.. When we tell stories from the old days to the younger people, they rarely believe us. Remember seeing who could go the fastest through the old Dallas/Fort Worth Turnpike in a Modulance. We often exceeded 100 mph and sucked thousands of those IBM cards out of the booth in the draft behind the ambulance. Blumberg (GRHS) still holds the record. Guest guest
I qualify. After several years in the Police business, I went " over to the dark side " as my friends said, and became a Paramedic and Firefighter. Guest guest
Dang. I thought I had to be the oldest guy on this list, but I'm starting to think I'm the youngest! Started in 83 at the age of 33 as an EMT. I was the Emergency Management Coordinator for Benton County, AR and ran with First Responders in the rural fire association. NREMT-P in 87 and worked with Eureka Springs Fire, MEMS in Little Rock, and was one of those beloved Paramedic examiners with the Health Department just for fun, before going back to Emergency Management in Little Rock, then to Dallas. When I recertified last year, National Registry sent me a nice certificate congratulating me for 20 years or recerts....but I thought it was actually a warning to get the heck out before I'm too old....but after listening to you guys...I have a ways to go! My favorite old item was the pager we used in the early 80's....it was red and about the size of a portable radio these days and you got voice commands over it.
