Guest guest
I didn't mention my EMT-B. 1977 I think it was. We decided to go from Red Cross to EMT, and add to our skills and equipment. Those of you from those days remember that an 8-hour RedCross First Aid course was all that was required. Ambulances had to carry a " first-aid kit " and a traction splint. That was it. Jimmy Dunn helped us get the course organized. We had several physicians who agreed to teach us the course, but we soon discovered that they were either clueless as to what an EMT did and wanted to have us intubating and doing intracardiac injections right off the bat or they never showed up for class. So we divided the Orange Book up into chapters and basically taught ourselves. In those days folks from the Regional TDH offices came and did the skills exams, and boy were they strict. Dressing, bandaging, and splinting had to be done just so, and we took pride in following all the rules. We all passed our exams the first time around. We did lots of time in the ER, and we learned to bag with the BVM in the OR with the anesthesiologist. I remember coming out after a procedure in which I had been the sole ventilator for an hour or so, and my left hand was semi-permanently claw shaped. We bought our first ambulance, which was a Ford low-top van with plywood cabinets, which kept falling over on us after about the first year. But we were a huge improvement over what we had before even though, in those days, we didn't know anything about Load and Go. We stayed and played. We delivered our patients to the hospital beautifully splinted and bandaged after 45 minutes on scene. They were, of course, 90% dead from shock, but we didn't allow those broken bones to move an inch. By the time I got to paramedic school, concepts were changing. The first IV I ever started in the field was with Houston FD and it was enroute to The Tubs. I was scared to death about sticking on the roll, but once it was done, and I saw I could do it, that became my permanent plan. HFD had some great medics in those days, and I learned lessons from them I will never forget. Guest guest
I liked the funeral home work. I could always make someone smile. Why did we come up with high tops with inverters? We had to be 18 to get an EMT certificate & recertify every two years. It was not racing. It was just sure fun. Not all the paper work & suits. I learned the old tricks the hard way. Stretcher pushed down a bridge, keys taken, back door blocked, ect. It was fun. If the Q2B was still coasting, you were on scene too long. B. Guest guest
That's a name out of the past as well as Pro! Guess it's time to chime in too. ECA in 1978 and EMT in '79 in Nacogdoches. The " orange book " from ACEP was the text. I was a student at SFA and volunteered on the ambulance. We ran out of the county ED (Memorial Hospital) so when not on a call we worked the ED and learned a lot from the Docs and nurses. Docs were not there 24/7. They had to be called in, especially at night and on weekends. You never knew what doc, there for what specialty was showing up. Coming in with an OB you could have the orthopedist on call who comes in!!! You had to renew your certification every 2 years and that was with state doing the skills and written testing! 1981 was special skills and going to work for Paris, TX who was just starting to do ALS. We had to call for permission to start IV's or intubate! They didn't have standing orders/protocols yet. When it was a bad call and you started the IV in the back of the ambulance, it wasn't uncommon to shove the needle in the bench seat so no one would get stuck by it during the call and clean it up later. It was also a time when only " wimps " wore gloves unless it was an OB call. Getting blood on you was a sign of a " good " call and almost like a badge of honor!!! We weren't worried about HIV (what was that) and most didn't worry about hep or other diseases too often! What a change. 1982 Paramedic school back in Nacogdoches. Carolines book was it! In the 1980's was HEB ambulance service....post s era back in the DFW metroplex. We thought we were something with 2 paramedics on the box (no high-top vans anymore!) was running things, Barnhart was a supervisor, was there. Donnie P. you remember those days right!? I've been able to work with a lot of great medics over the years! Still run into many of them/you at conference!
