Strattera

I know that most of us believe that our kids should stay away from prescription

medication that help with ADHD symptoms but are there any parents who have had

positive results, specifically with Strattera? My son is 9 and has HFA. His

biggest area of concern is impulsivity, hyperactivity and anxiety. We have been

working with a DAN! Doctor since he was 2 years old and have done everything. He

has been a good responder to almost every supplement/medication (gut, yeast,

anti-viral) we have tried. I have been debating on a trial ADHD medication to

see if it helps (specifically at school). We work with Dr. Usman and I have

never mentioned ADHD medication to her. Does or will she prescribe?

TIA,

Dayna

Dayna,My son and I are taking 1/2 of a sudafed (decongestant) daily to help us focus. He is 40ish lbs and I am 145ish lol... I am fairly sure it helps him and not sure if it helps me LOL but this morning we did not have it and we have both been less focused. If you look online, there are people that actually feel sudafed helped them focus far better than the RX adhd stuff.

The only reason I suggest it, is that it's a fairly easy thing to obtain (got to sign at the counter b/c it can be used to make meth)and it's cheap and if it doesn't work out, then you've lost about 5$. I think a 90tab box of generic at walgreens cost me about that much. And if it doesnt work out you can still use it for congestion this winter LOL (it does contain red dye)

It is a stimulant though, so if it does work, and you still want to try an RX, at least you know the RX will probably work. There's also tenex and the long acting form of that, but they can make a kid tired... my son has all the adhd and anxiety you mention, but when he is tired, his behaviors get even worse (aggressive) so we have chosen not to try tenex for his anxiety.

We haven't tried RX adhd meds because he has a seizure disorder and it's contra-indicated in those.

Dayna please do post if you decided to try, I'm very interested to hear more. We are are in a similar place here, both re current symptoms and responses to DAN. Having said that we have more of 'pure' ADD than ADHD. We are looking into propranolol actually, as should work for anxiety and impulsivity, as well as AD(H)D, and has very good safety profile in low doses. If that does not work or we cannot get a trial I might start considering some 'standard' medications. That is good to hear, thanks for posting, we have been meaning to try. Is the one you are taking combined with dextromethorphan, or just a single active ingredient?Same here re worsening of behaviours when tired, I suspect and hope that propranolol might help there as that could be linked to dysregulated sympathetic responses> > > **> >> >> > I know that most of us believe that our kids should stay away from> > prescription medication that help with ADHD symptoms but are there any> > parents who have had positive results, specifically with Strattera? Just plain old psuedophedrine, nothing else. But I guess I have heard the DM might help too??

Yes, it is a glutamate blocker, anti-inflammatory, including calming microglial

inflammation! Many other things too, email me if you'd like forwards... (has

been tried in autism also, a couple of small scale promising studies) neno @

I just want to mention that for those who to avoid medication there is a company called Neuroscience that makes supplements geared to work with neurotransmitters. We did a urine test with them & we have used thaws with good luck in the past. We r going to give them another shot. Dr Usman does work with this company. RuthSent from my iPhone

now, our pediatrician has told us to stay as far as possible AWAY from

pseudoepiniphedrine since my first child was a toddler. He felt that it was the

most dangerous cold medicine I could give my young children. I guess because

it's a stimulant...he never said why. Can someone explain to me why it's safe

for my 6 year old with ASD to take now?

We are on the verge of trying some Rx drugs too. We don't want to, but we are

getting really, really, really tired...

Your pediatrician said that probably for the same reason that he would advise

you against giving Strattera to a toddler, because both can potentially affect

neurotransmitters, adrenergic function etc. Which is the exact thing that needs

to be tweaked in our kids now!

My short take on it is that these pathways are very messed up in some of our

kids and need to be brought back into balance. Imo removing the culprit/s that

initially caused these things to go wrong can only, in most cases, correct some

of the issues. Not all. This is down to epigenetic changes. Because even if the

things that originally caused HPA dysfunction, or serotogenic dysfunction, are

completely removed or blocked, we are still left with changed genetic expression

of say serotonin receptors or adrenergic receptors etc. Imo this can be

potentially brought into balance by careful and individualised use of

(pharmaceutical) agents that affect those things. Not to say that this is easy

or straightforward or will work for everyone. Also not to say that there are no

natural agents out there that would do the same - but the problem with this is

that those are not so streamlined. The other problem is that if a natural agent

is strong enough to do what we need it to do, it might be just as risky/powerful

as a pharmaceutical agent.

I think there may be some risk to cardiac function, but I believe that is true of all stimulants.

BTW the dose for decongesting a 6-12 yr old is 1-2 pills, I believe, and we are giving a 1/2 pill. Double check that but I am just

saying that it is a very small amt. No matter what you should be comfortable with what you are doing for you child, so

by all means, only try it if you are comfortable with that. I am afraid to try the RX stuff b/c of the incresaed risk of seizures

and Alek even had a dramatic staring spell once after having DMAE pill from the vitamin store... which I later found out is

also contra-indicated in seizure patients. Yet that is generally recommended for " focus. " Sigh.

My son is incredibly anxious and I am not sure if we would see an increase LOLb/c what would that look like? Haha. He already goes selectively mute in situations, without the sudafed, so I am not sure I would notice the increase of anxiety, if that makes sense?

Aug 17 he bit his teacher Aug 18 he gripped the assistant in the classroom when she grabbed him up for going to the wrong side of the playground. We removed him from that school and I started giving him his arsenal of bio-med again (during summer he did very well without the entire arsenal at home, very almost normal LOL)

Aug 22 sent to a new school, with the arsenal, was very anxious, still trying to elope but at least verbally saying " I want to get out of here " as he's opening the door to leave, selectively mute when required spoke to by anyone, but was able to separate from momma Aug 25 got gold ticket for superior behavior, Aug 26, bit teacher after being grabbed for trying to elope.

So uh, he has difficulty in school with or without the arsenal. I truly am not sure the sudafed increases his anxiety. I do know that without it, I have never been told that he had a great day. The first time I used it in pre-k, it was when he was 4 and it was actually for a stuffy nose, I was told " oh my goodness mommy, he had the best day EVER. Whatever you did, do it again!!! " which what caused me to review the stuff I did and then look up sudafed... and learn that it had " focus " capabilities (I knew it was used to make meth, I did not know people used it off-label to help them study and focus)

It's a decongestant. He takes a separate anti-histamine.

Thanks. It is also primarily an antihistamine. Have you tried him on any other antihistamines or mast cell blockers?> > > >> > > > >> > > >> > > > > > **

Us to! We're more inattentive type than hyperactive. He doesn't remember reading the first sentence of a 3 sentence math word problem! Talk about frustrating homework... My son does not have anxiety or impulsivity. He just can't focus on anything he doesn't have 100% total interest in.I'm at the point of begging to try adderall. I can't stand to see him going through this any longer. It's hard for him and it's hard for me. I've been doing biomed for years and while his ASD is mostly gone, his ADD is just not getting any better.Tenex made him sleepy. He would take 3 hour naps. No bueno.

Natasa >> I know that most of us believe that our kids should stay away from prescription medication that help with ADHD symptoms but are there any parents who have had positive results, specifically with Strattera? My son is 9 and has HFA. His biggest area of concern is impulsivity, hyperactivity and anxiety. We have been working with a DAN! Doctor since he was 2 years old and have done everything. He has been a good responder to almost every supplement/medication (gut, yeast, anti-viral) we have tried. I have been debating on a trial ADHD medication to see if it helps (specifically at school). We work with Dr. Usman and I have never mentioned ADHD medication to her. Does or will she prescribe? > > TIA,> Dayna>

Oooooh don't mention the H word! :(

So Tenex can be a sedative, and Strattera can induce extra anxiety...

huh (we have issues both with low energy and anxiety). Adderall works

through similar mechanisms as Strattera, but if anxiety is not an issue

that might be just the right thing. It also says that it can offset

negative effects of SSRIs and is sometimes used in combination with

them.

Maybe we should have a separate yahoo list for discussions on meds (and

other approaches) for high-functioning nearly-recovered biomed-resistant

AD(H)D. Anyone?

We can, but I honestly don't see any reason why we shouldn't just discuss it here. Unless you really just want another list to try to keep up with. I went no mail to all my other biomed lists just because I can't keep up with them all and take care of this one.I would join the list if you made it, though. I just don't think it's necessary to make one. This list is not anti-med, just anti-doing-meds-first-unless-absolutely-necessary (and there are times when it's absolutely necessary). Besides that, this is just not uncommon. So many kids are biomed resistant when it comes to ADHD and most of them end up on them by 10.

ok, I my feeling was that it could clog up the list with things that not

so many are interested in, but you are right it is hard following too

many lists.... Though if someone does create one I'd be happy to join :)

Don't feel that it will clog up the list with things that notso many are interested in. Just in my case, I have 3folders for the post: one FOR KEEPS, one is IMPORTANTTO REVIEW and one is VIRA for everything else.Sometimes, others are just ahead. So agree! Best list ever. Even if my ideas or questions don't make sense, I

never feel like I'm in trouble for having them. I changed all my other settings

too LOL!

Why I love this list above others... almost no one ever responds: " Did you read all the documents? " " Did you do a search? " etc.I hate that about other lists... you ask a simple question and the first

response is whether you read a 60 page document. :-\Well, if I don't know the answer to the question and I asked it...I either didn't read the document or don't remember reading the answer.

So, if you can't help me out, why does the list exist? LOLLOVE MY MB12V!!! <3(Thanks Cheryl)
