Treated for hyperthyroid 2009; thyroid meds. Having weird symptoms now.

welcome, sue,

i have primary progressive ms and have a clean mri every time the neuro makes me

the tattle tale for my dx (diagnosis) was a spinal tap (lumbar puncture).

have you had one of those? what exactly are your symptoms?

Hi, Everyone!

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Wow!

To answer some of your questions:

After the " clean " MRI, I was told not to worry about it. So, no " spinal tap "

yet.

In the meanwhile, I am patiently going through appts after appts with various

" specialists " to address the symptoms: physical therapy exercises to deal with

the pain, weakness and tingling and burning sensations in my right shoulder,

right arm, right lower back, right hip, right thigh, right leg. Yes, all on the

right side.

The ophthalmology appts to find out why I have episodes of losing vision in my

right eye.

Other symptoms:

I stumble and fall often - my right leg gives out when I walk or run; I have

bruises and cuts from falling.

I have burn scars on my right arm now from misplacing where my hand and arm is

intended to reach when I reach for stuff while I am cooking. I drop and break

things for no apparent reasons - even light stuff like a pen or a dish. I can't

use my right hand for more intricate work - like writing or dialing a

combination lock.

When I walk, I weave like I am drunk so have to steady myself by touching the

walls/railings. (I am terrified of getting pulled over - I know I can never

pass those sobriety tests I see on TV if they make me walk heel-to-toe!)

I have urinated on myself in public places several times, so have been wearing

pads for protection. And I go to the bathroom every hour or so just as a

precaution, whether I need to or not.

I am exhausted all the time.

I have problems focusing and am slow to understand what people say, but I passed

the cognitive tests even though I had to really, really struggle to think

through each answer. Same with when I speak; the wrong words would come out of

my mouth or they come out in the wrong order - it is easier for me to type; I

can go back and edit.

I forget people that I just meet (not just their names but the fact that we had

even met the day before) and that is upsetting because I am in the Army and work

as an aide to a VIP - and I can't do my job now. People are beginning to treat

me as if I am stupid and they don't give me any important work to do anymore

because I keep asking people to repeat what they say; now, I just answer the

phone and print out and file papers. I even avoid answering the phone because I

need to keep asking people to repeat themselves or I say things incorrectly and

they do not understand me!

I have been transfered to two jobs already in the past six months - this is

after a successful career of over 20 years!

When these crazy symptoms were first really noticeable in January, I contacted

the endocrinologist to see if it was the thyroid but she said not. So, I looked

up the symptoms at the Mayo Clinic web site and the list had suggested MS. But,

the MRIs looked good.

I guess all I can do is be patient and go through the tests then go back to the

neurologist as the symptoms persist.

Sorry for going on and on.

I am OK, but just need to plod through everything steadily.

I do have " good " days where I don't stumble but the bad days are becoming more

frequent. I will schedule another MRI in a few months, to see if they are still

good. And, I will demand a spinal fluid test.

regards-

Sue

Hi, Sue!

About the " drunk tests " - ask your doctor for a paper attesting to " I

ain't drunk, I've got A Neurological Disorder " , that should ease your mind a

bit on that score - mercy knows I haven't been able to do the " one foot "

thing for years, and nowadays can't swear to remember the alphabet on any

given day! :-)

Meanwhile, hope you find answers soon, and the right treatment for your

discomforts...

Hi SueYour symptoms do sound like MS but there are other things it could be as well. In our group files there is a file called "MS Mimics" in case you haven't read it yet. The National MS Society used to give out 'get out of jail free cards' that informed the police about MS and how it can affect walking and balance. I don't know if they still give them out though. So you are in the Army? Where are you stationed? Twenty years in the service must have taken you to a variety of posts, here and overseas. Where all have you been? Has your doctor put you through the big battery of blood tests to 'rule out' all the diseases that can cause your problems? Are you seeing a neurologist? What does the doc

say?hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. The slight variations in spelling and grammar enhance its individual character and beauty and in no way are to be considered flaws or defects. To: MSersLife Sent: Fri, July 2, 2010 12:39:27 PMSubject: Re: NEW MEMBER -- sue22310

Thanks, .

I will ask the primary care doctor for that note when I see him next week.

I had not thought of that. Am thinking of requesting a different neurologist

while I am at it. The current one basically wrote me off as not having a

neurological disorder. After the one 1-hour appointment in April to go over the

MRI result, he has not wanted to see me again - he just passed me on to

rheumatology and ophthamology and physical therapy. <sigh>

Hi, Sharon-

I am currently in andria, VA. I have been stationed in Germany a couple of

times, and also Fort Ord,CA, Fort Hood, TX and Pearl Harbor, HA, among other

locations. Several deployments since 1988.

Yes, I have read that there are potentially other illnesses that resemble MS,

but the neurologist spent one hour with me to go over the MRI back in April and

then basically told me to go away and see the rheumatologist, ophtamologist, and

physical therapist - to treat the individual symptoms; that's it.

Blood tests ruled out diabetes.

My thyroid tests are normal now that am on Synthroid - and get tested every 6

weeks for that to monitor that level.

ANA have been unusually high for some antibodies (and the MRI shower

degenerative disk disease). So, appt with the rheumatologist. But the

rheumatologist said all that is " normal " . Again, basically, " go away " .

My plan is to diligently go to all the referral tests and when they rule out all

their little checklist of what it is not, I will go back to demand the spinal

tap thing. Or check for lime disease or whatever. I know I am not/not imagining

all these symptoms. I mean, you can't imagine it when your pants are wet down to

the knees after you just peed on yourself for no reason, or when your boss tells

you you are speaking gibberish or jsut fall on your face because you can't

control your leg!

Are you in the military, by any chance?

regards-

Sue

Did the rheumatologist do a bunch of blood work? If so that is pretty standard. When I was going through diagnosis I was sent to a rheumatologist too. He ordered a number of blood tests and told me he did feel it was MS. It's all a part of the diagnosis process for many of us.hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. No, I'm not military but I have family that are. My brother and 4 nephews have been stationed in Germany and they loved the country. They all have returned several times and one nephew brought home a German wife. I think you plan is a good one--keep going to all the appointments and doing all the stuff. For most people a MS diagnosis is a process of elimination. Hang in there! SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. I

am new here as well. We were lucky in the fact that they have done so

many tests to eliminate what else it could have been. They are going to

be doing a spinal tap this week and another MRI. My husband your symptoms

are so much the same. He has been urinating himself quite a bit. It’s

very difficult to deal with when you don’t know what is going on. I

hope they can get you diagnosed soon.
