My 8 yr. old son is spiraling downwards, biting and hitting himself, aggressive towards the dogs, destructive in general and lots of tantrums. Usually this is fixed by vanco and a yeast med, but he's been on vanco and keto for about 2 weeks now and behavior is getting worse. Doc suggested trying Gentamicin in case it's an abnormal bacteria we're dealing with, but I have no experience with this med so wanted to hear other's experience???

My son is really sensitive to meds and has regressed on some before (badly regressed on augmentin when he was a toddler), so I'm scared of trying new things. Please advise!!

I know others may not agree with what im goin to say..but even though i believe there is a time and place for meds there is usually a lot of reprcecussions that go along...antibiotics are really hard on the gut and after a while the gut cant recover..i would try tons of the probiotic that works well for your child. if he can handle culturelle that is specific for fighting bacteria..i would get him on that for a while and then maybe try the naturals after the gut has recovered a bit like goldenseal root or oil of oregano...but it sounds like his gut flora could be damaged real bad from so much antibiotics and inflammation..have you tried neuroprotek? that stuff helps a lot of kids with inflammation.

Crystal, my son went through this at age 7. He turned into a child none of us recognized. I know nothing about vanco, but high dose buffered vitamin c, epsom baths and l-theanine really helped alot. Also, melatonin at night will help him sleep and help to calm him during the day. I've been where you are. Sorry, mama. It might help to know that my son came out the other side better than ever. -TammyTo: mb12valtrex Sent: Monday, August 29, 2011 8:16 AMSubject: Fwd: Question/Gentamicin...

An added thought: I remember reading before about a condtion that occurs with kids who have had measles. This generally occurs around 7 years or so after the initial infection. Symptoms include regression in behavior and neurological symptoms. It always stands out in my mind when parents report regression in their kids at the age of 7-8-9ish. I wonder if there is a reaction similar to (or one that mimics) that occurance after natural measles infection? Has anyone come across any articles/studies that address this? -TammyTo: "mb12valtrex " <mb12valtrex >Sent: Monday, August 29, 2011 9:21 AMSubject: Re: Fwd: Question/Gentamicin...

I appreciate all views/input/advice!!

Couple of considerations...my son has never done well on probiotics and I'm not sure why. They turn him into a little crazy dude and I've tried so many different ones. Funny thing is they do stick in his gut and show up on his stool tests under beneficial flora. His stool tests will have a ton of scary serious stuff show up and on the other side is a ton of beneficial flora...it's so weird he's got so much good stuff; why isn't it crowding out the bad stuff??

Also, right now my son seems to be experiencing seasonal allergies which is new for him. He's got some mild shiners under his eyes and total swamp breath. I am actually wondering if he's got a sinus infection going on. I have not found any allergy meds or supps that work well without increased hyperactivity or irritability.

Little guy has a pretty clean diet and eats great. We also incorporate Feingold because all dyes and preservatives really set him off.
