Guest guest
Once upon a time, I would roast a turkey with my own cornbread stuffing, having made the cornbread from scratch. But, turkeys were the least expensive meat I could buy. I think I paid 10 cents a pound, certainly not more than 19 cents a pound. Now, in order to get a turkey for 49 cents a pound, I have to spend $30. So, today, I bought a rotisseried chicken and a couple of pumpkin pies. I did not know that the milk was almost gone and I forgot to buy brown sugar. It's been so cold, my fingers are really numb. I can't even think about much of anything other than how we can keep warm. Yesterday, I turned the thermostat for the living room all the way up. I could feel the heat coming up from the baseboard heater but, it seems to want to go straight to the window which is right above it. This morning, when I got up, I did not notice it to be any warmer in the living room, so I turned the thermostat back down. My sister hasn't called, so I don't know her plans for Thanksgiving. It's not like she will show up on my doorstep. She insists that Washington is too cold for her. She always has an excuse. But, it's easier for her to travel because she can leave her husband at home. So, there's just her. If I travel, I have to take both my sons who live with me. I'll probably watch the parade and the dog show that comes on after the parade. I haven't made a big Thanksgiving dinner in a really long time. Our high was supposed to be 25; but, only got to 13 degrees. My daughter, Challis, will come over with her hubby and four kids to join us. That will make 13 of us all together for the day. My son is planning on taking all the kids on a hay ride before we eat. We will have turkey and ham, mashed potatoes and turkey gravy, spinach dip, rolls, relish tray, green bean salad and cranberry sauce. Desert is apple, pumpkin and pecan pies and cheesecake.I made three apple pies and two pumpkin pies today. I made cranberry sauce yesterday. This morning I made a pot of turkey broth to use tomorrow. My son and I will put the turkey on tomorrow. I will make the stuffing. What about you???? SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Well I forgot the stuffing and cranberries, but I have fresh yams that I will roast with some orange juice and brown sugar, a 14 lb bird to roast, I'll make giblet gravy, and rolls. And a pumpkin pie with some schwans cheesecake/turtle ice cream for the top...yum. The only fly in the ointment, and it's massive, is that Rob called this evening to invite Robbin (not ME, just Robbin) over to his mom's. I reminded him that this is the first Thanksgiving I will have with Robbin in three years, but will allow Robbin to go, as long as their timing doesn't mess up mine. He said they will probably eat fairly early, I was shooting for about 5 p.m, so that *might* work. If they're going to be too close to when I want to eat, I might just move mine to Sunday (which is also Rob's birthday), I don't want to make this feast only to have Robbin be not hungry because he is too full from there. It can wait a couple of days, it will be just as good. I don't honestly think Rob is going to pull anything, but the thought of him driving away with Robbin, even if only a few miles away and for a few hours, gives me the willies. I know it will be ok, I'll watch a movie while he's gone (I just got Letters to t from Netflix) but it's going to be a rough few hours. Yes, Robbin WILL have his cell WITH him. Robbin wants to go and doesn't want to go, the "doesn't want" is because he knows it is upsetting me. Not that I told him, he came in and found me crying and figured out why. I told him I'll be ok and I want him to go and have fun, I said well at least it's food I didn't have to buy (feeble attempt at a joke). I am NOT looking forward to that part of the day. Rob said he might join us for out feast (I invited him), said he might "make the rounds" lol... I'll be ok, tomorrow will be ok, Robbin will be fine and home for my cooking. I just have to get through it. ~*~Hugs~*~ ~*~Akiba~*~ http://www.affiliates-natural-salt-lamps.com/pages/156.php -- Happy Thanksgiving everyone! What are your plans? Guest guest
The Swedish thanksgiving day is the second Sunday of October, but it's not really celebrated the way the American Thanksgiving is, it's more of a church tradition only. However, we do have the first of Advent coming up this Sunday. That marks the beginningof the Christmas season in Sweden. And it used to mark the beginning of the Christmasseason in the stores too, but Christmas seems to come earlier and earlier in the shops every year...too bad, when I was a kid every shop would compete of having the most spectacularChristmas decorations/window dressings etc. And nothing of that even started beforethe first of Advent, incidentally the only Sunday when the stores where open. This meant that on the first of Advent the whole town would just burst out in Christmas beauty on that Sunday, from nothing to over the top in a moment... Nowadays they start sneaking Christmas on youalready in October, come December you are fed up with Santas and the likes already : (Anyhow. Even without the spectacular show in the stores, first of Advent is still first of Advent. We have invited our neighbor in for the traditional drink of glögg, and we'll make some homemadegoodies and candy. The ginger bread will be store bought though... We got hold of one bottle of this year's special limited edition glögg from Blossa (they make a new one, with new flavoring every year), and this year the flavor is safron (one of the traditional Christmasspices in Sweden). We are really curious of that one. Have a happy Thanksgiving today, all of you who celebrate it!love/Reb>> I hope each of you has a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!
