Guest guest
How are any of you treating generalized anxiety at school? My ds just started second grade. He has so much anxiety that it is really hard for him to function at school. The anxiety is totally separate from the HFA. It is generalized anxiety. Examples: being late to school, finishing his work, his work being perfect, finishing first, missing class when he leaves for breaks, speech and OT, etc. It is definitely more generalized than social. What should I do? He is only like this at school. At home he is more relaxed however he is an only child and always has my undivided attention. Help! Guest guest
When my son, Jimmy started gymnastics, he became very upset because he couldn't remember the directions (he was so excited, learning a new place, etc) that I saw it stressed him out, so much so, that he started to break down in class. After class I spoke with the instructor to get what would be done for next weeks lesson. We practice it at home. I have helped him work on what to do if he's not perfect, and help him to involve humor. Being able to laugh at yourself, is a great coping skill. I also taught him some jokes to help deflect some of the attention from his imperfections...a little mis-direction... He is very hard on himself, and has to know everything, a very tedious and annoying trait (I had to spend time looking up the specs on the starship enterprise..I was like come on now!), but that being said, he doesn't like surprises and doesn't like not to know something. And likes to be in charge of his direction. I think this is very typical trait of our kids. Jimmy is recovered, and I blame myself for him feeling self conscious about himself, because I was so conscious of his behavior, that I feel like I created some of that. I have a girlfriend who is a therapist (for adults) said that, you can help him navigate new experiences, and as his experiences grow, don't forget to stop talking. He needs to make his own mistakes, have his own experiences without you, because you will not always be there to help. She suggested a book " How to Listen so kids will talk and talk so kids will listen. " It's a good read and helpful. laura > > How are any of you treating generalized anxiety at school? Guest guest
Thanks for the suggestions. I have a couple of natural supplements that I will try first. I am not sure what to do at this point and I struggle with the idea of putting him on prescription medicine. I had the same anxiety as a kid and in my twenties was diagnosed with generalized anxiety. I take Cymbalta every day and Klonopin as needed. I wonder if it is biological and should be treated separate from the autism.
Guest guest
I've heard that Valerian root can be bad for the liver so I would watch that. I've been recommended "Relax-a-sauris" L-theanine blend chewables (grape flavored gummies) you can take several a day several hours apart. I haven't tried them yet for my DS, but my DAN recommended them for anxiety.Subject: RE: What to do about anxiety? To: mb12valtrex Date: Thursday, September 8, 2011, 6:11 AM My daughter has the same anxiety issues. I agree with trying the supplements. I also have the school counselor working with her. I have the teacher modify certain things like make-up work. I took her to a physciatrist who recommended paxil. I choose not to go that route because the anxiety is mainly at school. I also found that private counceling made her anxiety worse. Last year was so severe that she cryed everday. This year's teacher seems to make a better fit. Also, in our community we have Crider Health Center. They come into schools and work with kids with anxiety problems. Please let me know if you find anything else that really works for your child. To: mb12valtrex From: pamelaleigh99@...Date: Thu, 8 Sep 2011 06:48:17 -0400Subject: RE: What to do about anxiety? Guest guest
Mega b vitamins have helped our anxiety levels. The problem is you have to dose often (2 or sometimes 3 times a day, varies as stress levels do) and we use all separate Bs b/c of b-12 issues, so the cost of supplementing many B vitamins, a few times a day.... cost prohibitive for most. For us too, but we still do it :-(  Thanks for the suggestions. I have a couple of natural supplements that I will try first. Guest guest
Try naturals first but there are certainly children out there for which naturals simply aren't enough. Just do your research. Pamela From: mb12valtrex [mailto:mb12valtrex ] On Behalf Of Dgrundland@...Sent: Thursday, September 08, 2011 12:35 PMTo: mb12valtrex Subject: Re: What to do about anxiety? Guest guest
Antibiotics and vitamin c both eliminated anxiety in my son. If you like naturals, try OLE or OoO.Vitamin c also eliminated 24/7 thumb sucking in one day.Caryn
Guest guest
5 HTP (Griffonia) by Thorne, tyrosine, and Holy Basil is what we use. Been thinking of adding Valerian Root, but Holy Basil is definitely a great help as far as reducing self injurious behaviour. when not dealing with bacteria.... 5htp and l theanine worked amazing....for anxiety To: mb12valtrex Sent: Thursday, September 8, 2011 6:48 AMSubject: RE: What to do about anxiety? Guest guest
, glad to hear someone is using holy basil with some success. I have been considering it for my older son (who is having glucose issues) because I saw this: Holy Basil have been shown in clinical trials to nourish the pancreas and specifically help generate healthy new beta cells. Here are some other things I found for anyone interested. http://www.holy-basil.com/MaimesReportHolyBasil-1.pdf http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17887944 J Med Food. 2007 Sep;10(3):495-502.Ocimum sanctum Linn. (Holy Basil) ethanolic leaf extract protects against 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-induced genotoxicity, oxidative stress, and imbalance in xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes.Manikandan P, Murugan RS, Abbas H, Abraham SK, Nagini S.SourceDepartment of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Faculty of Science, malai University, malainagar, Tamil Nadu, India.AbstractThe present study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of ethanolic Ocimum sanctum leaf extract against 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced genotoxicity, oxidative stress, and imbalance in xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes. Four different concentrations of ethanolic O. sanctum leaf extract (100, 200, 300, and 400 mg/kg of body weight) were administered to Wistar rats by intragastric intubation for five consecutive days followed by intraperitoneal injection of DMBA (35 mg/kg of body weight) 90 minutes after the final dose of the extract. Administration of DMBA increased bone marrow micronuclei, phase I enzymes, lipid peroxidation, and protein carbonyl formation. This was accompanied by a significant decrease in the activities of phase II detoxification enzymes and antioxidants in the liver, erythrocytes, and bone marrow. Pretreatment with ethanolic O. sanctum leaf extract at a concentration of 300 mg/kg of body weight significantly reduced micronuclei formation and phase I enzymes as well as lipid and protein oxidation with enhanced antioxidant and phase II enzyme activities. The results of the present study suggest that ethanolic O. sanctum leaf extract inhibits DMBA-induced genotoxicity and oxidative stress by modulating xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, reducing the extent of lipid and protein oxidation and up-regulating antioxidant defenses.PMID: 17887944AlyssaTo: mb12valtrex Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2011 7:23 PMSubject: Re: What to do about anxiety? 5 HTP (Griffonia) by Thorne, tyrosine, and Holy Basil is what we use.
