Guest guest
The nice thing about low oxalate is it is not generally all/nothing.It is more like calorie counting. Plus you reduce things slowly.Very few foods are strictly off limits, things for instance like rhubarb and swiss chard (it's one of the mixed greens in the salad bags) Cassie's list of foods were either high in phenols/sal or med/high oxalateso that is likely causing some issues. Oxalate likes to bind with minerals so if you have a hard time keeping minerals up, oxalate is likely a problem. Kim, there's a list on yahoo, trying low oxalates is the name. Channa is over there andquite a few others I think. We have had a hard time adding in higher phenol/salicylate foods. Toni mentioned the low oxalate diet helping and another post recently suggested treating parasites might help. Anyone else have these experiences or other thoughts? My son's behavior is great right now but his food choices are pretty limited. I'd hate to limit further or start another intervention without a good reason... Guest guest
Udi's bread (which I limit and try to emilinate) - we use it, I think two slices is 14 mg oxalate, max for " low " diet is 40/day but we don't eat low, more like medium.Glutino pretzels - I stopped buying them though they are delicious, they have trace sesame and I am IGE allergic and the kids are IGG allergic; I think it's made with sunflower oil too which cross-reacts with sesame allergy. Almond Milk - coconut milk, coconut kefir, flax milk (available at some Walmarts) It's not actually super high butyou'd probably want to limit to one serving a day, I *think* it's 10mg oxalate in one cup. I'd have to check the spreadsheet. Rice - Uncle Ben's is actually 0 oxalate, something about the way they prepare it I guess.Green Beans - they show up on a lot of lists as low but they are high, we just don't eat them anymore b/cwe don't " love " them. You could likely keep them around if you reduced portion size and frequency. Potatoes - red potatoes have lower oxalate than white, small peeled ones boiled are best. We still allow potatoes and potato chips here and there but I am trying not to keep a big bag in the house b/c I eat them. Apple juice (diluted and given rarely) - We give pear juice. Prob not the best thing but we've been using the hispanic oriented juice boxes b/c they have the flavors we want but they do have sugar (not HFCS but sugar nonetheless, but they have mango and pear, flavors you can't find in normal juice boxes with 100% juice. Watch other juices that say 100% juice, they usually sneak apple juice or grape in there, both are non-FG stage 1) Applegate organic hot dogs - I think these probably have cherry in them. What I do is slice them long wise, boil them. This will allow whatever cherry juice inside to be sucked out into the boiling water.Sometimes he will eat chicken or steak but its a hit or miss - plain meat is low oxalate Grapes - grapes give my daughter headaches and bad sound sensitivity (think of a wine hangover, that is what I would characterize my daughter feeling like after grapes/raisins) She used to eat these daily. They were her favs. So while it saddened us both to avoid them, we just did it and it's all good. Sometimes I allow her to have a small amount but I'd never allow it day after day again. Apples (eliminated bc I noticed he started becoming obsessed and aggressive but he did eat them)Apples are not stage one approved but some people can tolerate the golden delicious. Granny makes my daughter a complete wreck. Other flavors just make her bouncy happy. So not a good thing if I need her to sit steal and " act like a lady " or whatever but if she's just home/playground, she's cool. We do only use organic though. Bananas - they are medium oxalate, we still allow them but 1/2 to one daily, not 2 a day like we'd done before. If you want to introduce a new food, I would suggest you do something that works with my younger kid, which is prepare a plate of something for myself and sit and eat it in front of them without offering any and perhaps comment on the interesting-ness of it. (While kiwi's & starfruit are ok for Feingold, they are really high oxalate so they can't be ones to test LOL.) Pineapple is high sal but for some reason some kids can tolerate so ok for FG st 1. Watermelon is ok st 1 but my daughter can't handle that! LOL Some kids can handle blueberries but they also are not fg st 1. Now the eating something different in front of my daughter does not entice her to want it. She is more about marketing so for instance, she'd need to see an ad on tv or youtube for it, or need to see a happy kid on the box. LMAO. Does your child eat any other green veggies? My daughter loves sulfur veggies LOL like broccoli and asparagus, even napa cabbage. Romaine lettuce is popular too. Guest guest
Just a note from the food list- Toni is absoultely correct about the foods being high in oxalates, phenols/salicilates, reading it made me feel twinges of pain because eating those foods would have put my daughter into aggressive, screaming fits and set her running in circles a year ago. Of interest, on top of the phenol/oxalate issues, my daughter still to this day, even with many food issues resolved, goes absolutely crazy on any Glutino brand product. It is the same with many GF snacks that are made with processed root starches (from the oxalates, or just the chemicals used in producing a dried starch?), and also from corn starch (I believe this is a GMO issue). Pears (peeled- if pear juice or canned pears are an issue, this is beacuse the peels are left on in the process of making juice for drinking or canning) are a godsend to us and we eat our weight in them each month! Pinto beans have been fantastic for us, even though they are purported to be difficult to digest. Their fiber is a big help. We cook them up with a lot of sesame oil and salt- to make a tasty refried bean, and eat with Que Pasa brand tortilla chips, the only kind the girls still don't react to. When understanding food reactions and hyperactivity, think about the effect of processing on foods. My husband sells automation equipment to manufacturers, including food manufacturers, and so it has been eye opening learning and understanding what is used in the food manufacturing process that can cause sensitivities. We make a lot of food in large batches (soup, beans), and freeze in daily meal sized glass containers. Then each morning I just pull something from the freezer to thaw for lunch or dinner, depending on what I will have time to make fresh that day. Hope this helps and does not just add more complications to consider. We are the family that did a parasite cleanse (Humaworm), and resolved our extreme sensitivity issues. We tracked our progress with a microscope and so have significant confidence that what we were seeing with diet opening up correlated with reducing our parasitic load. > > > ** > > > > > > We have had a hard time adding in higher phenol/salicylate foods. Guest guest
Hi Sandi-My son is 7 and weighs 50 pounds. We use Allergy Research Group P5p (vit B6) 275 mg. Magnesium is Perque, 220 mg in am and pm. Gaba is Kirkman (has niacinamide and inositol) - we take 150 mg in am and 300 mg in pm although I think others might take more... I am absolutely no expert with dosing. Our DAN gets us started and then we gradually increase / decrease here and there based on symptoms and tolerance.I think the Feingold organization is a good one. They advocate for food safety and worked hard on pressuring the FDA to label food dyes as harmful and causing hyperactivity (they already label in Europe). I think the $$ is hard for most to swallow with so much free information on the internet. I don't think there is a complete online source of the info but perhaps someone else knows of a great link. You might want to check the low oxalate site (www.lowoxalate.info) for a cross referenced list of high sal foods. The most common salicyates to avoid are apples, berries, tomatoes, peppers, citrus and grapes. They also avoid any preservatives, additives and food coloring. I think that most people on this group have already figured out that whole foods versus packaged, processed foods are essential, so if you are already eating non-processed foods, perhaps you could try to eliminate the above high salicylate items. If your child responds positively, then you can decide if you want to spend $$ on the program. Don't forget to journal so you know what foods are problematic.Good luck! Kim Kim,may I ask how much B6mag and GABA you use and what brands?also, I would like to try the few gold diet as I believe my son iPad phenols and sacilaytes issues, but do you have to buy the v exp feign old book to implement this diet, is there somewhere online to get the intro diet and beyond?thanks,SandiSent from my iPad Although every kid is different, my son would go crazy after eating apples of any kind, grapes or bananas. Guest guest
I know it is high but I swear I regretted not doing it sooner and the info they send is priceless. They have volunteers that write to companies and get them to certify that they are in fact not puttinghidden things in the food/packaging. The company has to sign off on this " contract. " Recently Frito Lay did not re-sign their committment so members got an email that said " remove Fritosfrom your safe list. " For instance, GF rice krispies, you think are ok but the product is packaged in a box coated with BHT inside. The company DOES reveal this on the package but they don't have to, because it's not in the food. Here's a sample : http://www.feingold.org/FL.html see it shows the brand, the flavor, and the offending item if it's in stage 2.You also get their info on supplements that are certified for stage 1 or 2.It is really nice to have a shopping guide to hand over to a family member and highlight the things you can buy, etc... helpful for me esp b/c my parents live next door and I could just show themin the book...The shopping guide is also based on your location so that's nice too.If you absolutely cannot afford it, email them, sometimes they give a break for extreme circumstances? www.feingold.org but its a whopping $82!Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry® Sender: mb12valtrex Date: Tue, 14 Feb 2012 17:24:23 -0500To: mb12valtrex <mb12valtrex > ReplyTo: mb12valtrex Subject: Re: hyperactive and aggressive Kim,may I ask how much B6mag and GABA you use and what brands?also, I would like to try the few gold diet as I believe my son iPad phenols and sacilaytes issues, but do you have to buy the v exp feign old book to implement this diet, is there somewhere online to get the intro diet and beyond? thanks,SandiSent from my iPad Although every kid is different, my son would go crazy after eating apples of any kind, grapes or bananas.
