EchinaceaFrom MS Info WikiJump to: navigation, searchEchinacea purpurea is an herb that is often called the purple coneflower. Echinacea is said to have anti-bacteria and antiseptic properties. In addition, it is often used to boost the immune system, especially toward the prevention of colds. Scientific studies have indicated that this herb limits the length and severity of infections. [edit] Echinacea and MS This herb should be avoided by people with MS because it stimulates the immune system, especially T cells and macrophages. Using this herb could make the disease worse and can impair the effects of disease modifying drugs, such as Avonex.  Sometimes people with MS will use Echinacea to prevent infection from a virus, which could provoke an exacerbation. However, there are other medications and strategies that people with MS could use to prevent viral infection, such as 'handwashing and avoidance of people carrying certain viruses.  Recent studies have shown that using echinacea does not change the course of the common cold.
