Guest guest
nne, There is a difference between SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Income).. State of PA doesn't include those benefits for Personal Income Tax purposes.. The Feds on the other hand.. 9 times out of 10 it will not be taxable, but again that depends on total family income and any of the other many things that go with Federal Income Tax.. Most of the time.. SSDI gets added into the Federal Return (because she will received a 1099-G at the end of the year), and then most of the time it will be deducted from income somewhere later in the filing of the tax return.. In some cases it would end being taxable (not often) when filing a joint return and the spouse makes tons and tons of money.. There is an option, I do believe, to have income tax deducted from the SSDI payments though.. if one suspects that they will end up owing taxes because of the amount of income in the family.. I'll check with my niece, who does tax returns for H & R block and see if she has any clue as to where the taxability might come into play.. Though it might not be until Tuesday when I speak with her next.. I'll let you know what she tells me.. Guest guest
Thanks Donna. Terry is getting SSDI. They file separate income tax because our son owes some back support from when he was unemployed and this way they only take what he gets back in a refund and they can't touch the daughter in laws. Guest guest
There's a worksheet for determing whether you'll owe taxes on SSDI. Here is a link to the worksheet: http://taxguide.completetax.com/tools/ssbenefits_m.asp Basically, add HALF of your SSDI benefits + total taxable income (pension, interest, dividends, wages) + non-taxable income. If the total is more than $25000 (single), $32000 (married filing jointly) or $0 (married filing separately), then you may be taxed on your SSDI. You really want to avoid married filing separately unless absolutely necessary. If you live together and file "married filing separately," you can be taxed on up to 85% of your Social Security earnings! Example, you are single and receive $18000 in social security in 2010. You also receive $200 in interest on a savings account. $9000 + 200 = $9200. You won't owe tax on the social security as it's less than $25000. If you determine that you will owe on social security, you do need to send estimated payments to the IRS each quarter of the year.Dan U dao_nguu@... Guest guest
Some states don't tax social security payments. For example, California doesn't. But, you'd have to check on the regulations for your state. Still, you might owe Federal tax on a portion of your social security depending on your TOTAL income. Remember, someone like Bill Gates or Oprah Winfrey is eligible to receive social security the same as anyone else who's paid into the program. So, if Bill were to be disabled tomorrow, he could collect SSDI even though he'd be making millions of $$$ on his stock. But, he'd be taxed on 50% of his SSDI while most of us wouldn't incur any tax.Dan U dao_nguu@...
