COLLEGE STATION, TX-The Gay, Lesbian and Transgendered Society (GLATS) has

filed a formal complaint with the university Provost following an article

that appeared in the June 21, 2008 issue of The Battalion that reported that

800 fairies drowned in the Philippines. In their letter, GLATS stated that

the term " fairy " is inappropriate and demoralizing. Instead, they recommend

The Batt follow the " Chicago Manual of Style " and use accepted names like

" gay " , " lesbian " , or " transgendered. " The Batt editor, " Otter "

Stratton, when first contacted by the News said, " This is the first I have

heard of this. I will have to look into it and get back to you. " Later,

Stratton revealed that the article was about a " ferry " that sunk and not

" fairies. " Statton said, " Even at A & M it is hard to believe that these two

words could be confused with one another. " Zavala, assistant chair

of GLATS, initially failed to understand the issue. But, she acknowledged,

" Now that I see the story I see there must have been a misunderstanding.

After all, " ferry " and " fairy " sound similar. Regardless, redneck sailors

have always had a genuine dislike for those sexually disenfranchised.

Perhaps they need to change the name of those boats to 'Big Interport

Transporters of Cars and Humans (BITCH)'. The next time one of them sinks,

there will not be so much confusion. " Stratton was found in his office,

incontinent of urine, and still laughing 2 hours later.
