Guest guest
I am confused about reading about sugar free products. For instant, I get POPSICLE brand of sugar free ice pops, they are 15 calories, and read total carbs 4g, but then it goes on to read sugars 0g, sugar alcohol 2g?? Wouldn' that leave each pop with 2g of sugar then from some source?? 2 from 4 leaves 2 of something?? " TLC " Joyce

The 'rule' I was taught was that you subtract 1/2 of the sugar alcohols from the total carbs to get your 'net carbs.' However, nutrition labels are not required to list 'net carbs' as everyone calculates them differently. They list total carbs followed by a breakdown of the types of carbs, but only for certain types of carbs. Apparently there are some carbs in the sugar free ice pops that come from something other than sugar, fiber or sugar alcohols. (Maybe they have some real fruit juice?) For instance, some Oatmeal I have lists carbs at 19g, with 3g fiber (of which 1g is soluble fiber) and 0g of sugars. So there are plenty of carbs, but only 3 grams come from fiber, and none come from sugar. Hope that helps. Mike

Guest guest
If the label for carbs says: Total Carbs 12 g Sugar alcohol 6 g Your 'net carbs' would be 9 g. (Take the sugar alcohol and divide that in 1/2, so 3g can be subtracted from the 12g) The reason you are supposed to be able to do this is that sugar alcohols digest differently than typical sugars (sugar alcohols are the sorbitol's and other items ending in 'tol). They are also the same things that prompt the warning 'excess consumption may have a laxative effect! ;-) Mike > > Mike, > > huh? wadja say???? > > JUDITH > > > The 'rule' I was taught was that you subtract 1/2 of the sugar alcohols > from > > the total carbs to get your 'net carbs.' > > > >
