Debra K. Carroll passed away yesterday after a three year battle with cancer.

Debra was a paramedic for thirty years and served the communities of Galveston

County, Highlands, Channelview, Liberty County, Mont Belvieu, and that is just

that I know of. She has made a difference in the lives of many including

students that she taught in the class room and in the field. Until her illness

she still worked on an ambulance and tried to get back to work everytime she

thought she had it beat. Her cancer came and went a lot. I was very fortunate to

have known her, she was my friend.

We are planning the memorial she deserves, and will send details as soon as I

have them.

I've known Debra for many years and can attest that she was a unique individual,

and certainly a memorable educator. If there are EMT classes in the hereafter

you can bet she'll be teaching them with her ponytail tied back, looking at the

student over the top of her glasses and saying " Are you done? " . Fond memories.

Kacey, keep me in the loop on the service please. We'll be there.

I met Debra in 1994 when I was lucky enough to be be hired to work as

her EMT-B partner. I was rather green, but anxious to learn

everything I could from her. I dont think I could have had a better

mentor to learn from. Debra and I were partners from the time I was

an EMT-B until I completed my Paramedic.

Debra and I worked together for 2 different FD/EMS services on

Houstons east side.

During this time I was so fortunate to learn many wonderful things.

To sit and listen to Debra speak about her early days as a Paramedic,

how things in EMS had changed (up to that point), and about the

struggles and battles as a women in EMS many years prior.

I dont think I have ever met a woman as strong and determined as

Debra.

Yet also have the bedside manners of a Saint. One thing she always

instilled was the need to keep " compassion " in EMS, in our bedside

manners, with our patients,,with our friends. Even within ourselves.

As time and our lives moved on, we each went on our own journey and

it has been a few years since I have seen Debra.

I am so saddened by the news of her passing.

Debra,,,take the glasses off and rest my friend.

You will be missed
