Guest guest
Accessible kitchens? Sound like a dream, doesn't it? But there are things that can be done without a lot of money or rebuilding. There is no way I can reach up into the cupboards that are normally used to keep plates, cups and glasses. In our kitchen only the "company" dishes are in the upper cupboards. There is an open pantry and my daughter-in-law setup a lower shelf with the dishes, cups and glasses where I can reach them. DIL put a 3 shelf bookcase against one wall in the kitchen and that's where the skillets and baking pans go. The bottom of the pantry is for the cooking pots and misc. The large bowls and platters are on another low bookcase type shelf. I can reach everything I use all the time. Maybe that kind of thing would work for you as well? Silverware.. well. there is only one place to keep that.. (unless of course he figures out how to store it out of my reach.. LOL).... Skillets & pots.. well I might find one or two of them..never the size I'd need.. and lids for those would be probably on a shelf out in the laundry room to boot.. (Except rearranging the kitchen cupboards, or clearing a path to the laundry room!) He's actually made it possible, if not a big pain in arse for himself, for me to actually get into the tub, and SITTING in the water, rather than using the seat itself.. He puts the transfer into the tub.. till I get transferred to wear I can then work my way down into the tub.. then gets the transfer thing out of the way.. he's even shaving my legs for me, when using the chair to shower, cause I couldn't keep my legs controlled enough to do the shaving for myself.. and all I need to do is see that gross stuff growing out.. and I want it GONE!!!.. I managed to pull myself up enough to be in a standing position.. and he's got to QUICKLY get that seat under me.. so that I can sit down.. BUT he manages to get a towel on the seat.. so I don't have to "stand" to dry my butt.. well at least not as long as it would take to dry my entire, size of Texas butt.. towel on the seat does most of that work.. then I stand for a second or two longer.. till he gets the thing pulled out enough that I can actually stay sitting until I'm ready to scoot on over and get the rest of me dried outside the tub.. Guest guest
I use a grabber that can reach up into the cupboards. It helps me pick up dropped items from the floor. I also make sure that dishes and cups are down low enough for me to reach. Margaret A. CoteTo: MSersLife Sent: Tue, December 7, 2010 12:56:00 PMSubject: Accessible kitchens....I)onna and everyone! Silverware.. well. there is only one place to keep that.. (unless of course he figures out how to store it out of my reach.. LOL).... Skillets & pots.. well I might find one or two of them..never the size I'd need.. and lids for those would be probably on a shelf out in the laundry room to boot.. (and that room he's conveniently managed to make completely impassable for either of my chairs.. LOL.. so I'm NOT out there doing laundry.. Got to wonder sometimes if he's not trying to keep me so dependent on him that I can't get mad enough to 'roll' out (aka walk out) on him.. I do say that jokingly.. though I do sometimes get upset enough with him, cause I don't wanna be a nagger.. and sometimes he makes me become one... (like changing the oil in the car!).. I really couldn't do without him.. and lately he's been a tremendous tremendous amount of assistance to me.. He broke out the 3-in-1 potty chair (can't figure out what that third use is though).. and sat it beside the foot of the bed.. so that I could transfer to it, without having to try and get into the bathroom either by foot or rolling over dogs in the manual wheelchair (or their piles of blankets on the floor... oh they do have a foam mattress, covered with a sheet too for bedding on the floor.. just tons of blankets to keep warm as well.. spoiled mutts!).. But unfortunately.. my butt just knows the difference between a REAL toilet seat.. and some contraption made to resemble one.. and I just CAN'T use it.. he did get the second of the 3-in-1 set up.. over the toilet so I'd have hand rails.. I could pee.. but I couldn't seem to get anything else done (and peeing wasn't easy either).. must be something in the sub-brain-warted-brain that tells me that I'm going to miss or something.. and just won't relax those muscles.. LOL.. All joking aside.. though.. he's made my life, these past couple of weeks much easier for me, and would make it easier yet if I could only tell him how or what I need done.. LOL.. now it gets a little more difficult when it's time to get OUT of the tub.. Oh.. there's never a dull moment around this house.. at least not while he's at home.. LOL..I am, again, SOOOOOOOOOO happy that you got all settled in and that the heat is working on a consistent basis.. cause it's colder than a umm.. well.. had to bring the brass monkeys in out of the yard yesterday!...There might be a frantic need to get out of the chaos..but I'm going to suggest, that you slow down just a bit.. or maybe.. for your health benefit.. use the fly lady system.. 15 minutes at work.. then take a break.. Guest guest
I've made some suggestions that would make it easier for me to get some things done.... like the dishes... easier... I love your suggestions..and maybe IF I can get him to clear a path to the laundry room.. we could do that with some shelving... But my suggestion for me reaching the kitchen sink (without soaking myself and the floor)... either build a ramp that would put me a couple inches higher in the chair.. OR sakes alive.. take the doors off under the sink.. and cover the opening with some different materials on a curtain rod.. that could be separated when I wanted/needed to roll up to the sink and closed when I'm not... he vetoed that suggestion real quick.. apparently he didn't like my idea even when we lived in the apartment that had the bookshelf type deal under the tall bar.. I bought Christmas material and made curtains to cover the clutter we kept in there.. then other materials at different times of the year.. Oh well.. guess he's stuck with the dishes now.. LOL HUGS |)onna Accessible kitchens? Guest guest
I can reach the lowest shelf of glasses.. but reaching in the dishwasher and getting them is easier.. and I've thought about a grabber.. but have been leery on spending the money on something that might not do the job completely... Makes me wish for that "self-cleaning" house that was being designed years and years ago.. http://www.weirdamerica.com/2007/01/03/weird-america-at-francis-gabes-self-cleaning-house/ turns out that it does exist.. only not quite the style I had imagined back then... HUGS |)onna I use a grabber that can reach up into the cupboards. It helps me pick up dropped items from the floor. I also make sure that dishes and cups are down low enough for me to reach.  Margaret A. Guest guest
I don't remember if I replied to this or not.. so I'm gonna do it a second time, if it isn't the first time.. LOL.. I hate brain warts, I really do.. LOL I'm glad that I could make you smile... that WAS my intent after all.. Stress can be sooooo draining on us.. that we've got to do whatever it takes to reduce that stress.. and it's been said that laughter is the best medicine.. so hopefully I gave you a full dose!.. And the fact remains, that if we could NOT find something to laugh about.. even if it is the MonSter itself and some of the strange and outlandish things it causes.. we'd be a sorry huddled lump of misery.. I personally prefer the "laugh with me, laugh at me" outlook to the whole situation.. And of course always seems to provide loads of material for the "laughs"... And when I can't seem to find something to laugh at or pick up my spirits.. some other dear person in this group will find something for me to laugh at, or pick my spirits up.. or give me grounds to pull my sorry crap together to find something to make them laugh or pick them up.. So dear Shalonda (and everyone else as well) THANK YOU for giving me a purpose to pick myself up, brush myself off.. and start all over again!.. LOL Donna i so love u!! I truly smiled for first time in a week...HAHAHA I'm not gonna slap u silly cuz you are my buddy and theres no sarcasm or secret BS behind it. Nowi got some kitchen placement stuff to plan~~woo-hoo!! I promise im going slow....not by choice my darn legs are achy. My old landlord thinks im going to pay rent until my lease ends in july mmmmm yea whatever!! Im just staying to myself and outta the line of fire. My nerves, emotions, patience, tact are all out of it right now. My brotheer calls it "going ghost" when i go into myself. Right now im not liking myself,my family(most) my friends(most). I gotta take a minute and find my happy place. Im ok but i know im at the point i cant take much more drama so i gotta handle it now. Geezy Peezy! hugs.....
