Guest guest
I have been seeing Dr. D, a family practice doctor, for more that 8 years. I have always liked him because he's funny and friendly and it's always like visiting with an old friend. But I was not happy with him when I saw him last week. Our small community doesn't have enough doctors and there is no neurologist (the last one was arrested;). So I don't have unlimited options. I do feel I need to do something though. Let me tell you what happened and you tell me what I should do.... new doc or give him another chance?I told his nurse my problems were a rapid heart beat and falling and losing my balance. So doc comes in and starts talking about me having an MS flare up. He didn't say anything about the heart beat thing. So I told him about the episode I had in May where I had rapid heart beat lasting more than 10 minutes. I tried to count the beats but couldn't keep up. After it went back to normal I was weak and that lasted into the next day. So I told doc about it. He didn't listen to my heart at all. He didn't take my pulse. He didn't ask any questions at all. He did tell me he thinks it was caused because I don't drink enough water. ME not drink enough water?? I have extremely dry mouth and have water with me every minute of the day and during the night too. I reminded doc about the dry mouth and said I am always drinking water. He didn't say anything. Then he said "is there anything else?" I said well what about the rapid heartbeat? Again he said he thinks it was caused by not drinking enough water. He didn't listen to my heart, didn't take my pulse, didn't order blood work. Nothing. It was later I realized he didn't even order my mammogram that is due. I forgot to say anything about the mammogram because I was stunned over the lack of response from him. What should I do? There's another provider who is actually closer to my home who is a nurse practioner with his own practice. His name is Jack and I have also seen him off and on for years. Jack and his wife are wonderful people. I have bounced between Jack and Dr. D because with my disability pension I have to be seen by an MD. So Dr. D is the one who fills out my forms for my disability pension when they need things filled out. Dr. D is on my insurance (Humana PPO) and Jack isn't. Jack will follow up on things better but has a tendency to refer out more than I like. Jack only charges $35 for an office visit. I called Humana today and found out if I see Jack and he orders tests they will pay for the tests if they are done at an in-network facility. I am thinking about going back to Jack but also staying with Dr. D in case I need forms filled out. What do you all think?hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
I just realized I said Jack is a nurse practitioner. He is an RN but is also a Physician's Assistant. My mind was on my problems and not focused on what I was writing. SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Hi Sharon,You said rapid heart beat and I am wondering how is your potassium levels? A couple weeks ago I had Marcus in the ER because of a rapid heart rate. The ER doc gave him a dose of Ativan because he thought Marcus was just having an anxiety attack. He also ordered bloodwork. About an hour into our stay in the ER, a different ER doc took over. He came back with the results of the bloodwork and explained that Marcus's potassium level had dropped to below normal. The low end of normal is 3.3 based upon our hospital's lab standards. Marcus's was 2.2. The doc added that a low potassium level can cause a rapid heart beat in some people and a very slow heart beat in others. Marcus has a diagnosis of autism, so he will be dealing with anxiety at times. But, this particular incident, I believe that the rapid heart rate caused an increase in his anxiety level. That's what the 2nd ER doc had said to us. So he ordered IV infusion of potassium plus the oral dose of potassium. The 300 ml of potassium was infused at a rate of 100 ml/hr. After the final bag of potassium was infused Marcus had to wait for about 10 minutes or so, then the lab tech came and drew some more blood. After about another 45 minutes or so, the nurse came back and said that Marcus would not have to be admitted. He was sent home with a prescription for potassium and instructions to have a follow up with Mara. Mara is the nurse practitioner that we see. Guest guest
I've been looking around at other doctors as well but found no one I wanted to see. I thought about seeing an internist but found out two have left the community in the past two months leaving only one very overworked internist left. There have been several other doctors leave the community in the past month as well. I know the two internists that left said it was because of the poor Medicare reimbursement rates. They have gone to Phoenix and sdale where there are more people with private insurance. Sad. Thanks n for the encouragement:) SharonThis email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, I think it was a week before his ER visit that we had gone to the park so that Marcus could take some reference photos for his storyboard. When we left the park, we were going to go to Fred Meyer; but, we started hearing a loud bumping sound. I turned onto the road that Hay is on and pulled into one of their parking lots. Marcus got out and saw that the back tire was flat. I called Roadside Assistance and got connected to a provider in Cle Elum. He said that he was sure there was at least one provider in our town who could help us sooner. So, he disconnected and the operator came on the line. Anyway, we ended up getting the spare put on by a young man with a little girl in his truck. He had a tank on the back of the truck, probably with weed killer or bug killer in it. He offered to change the tire and had it all finished and the Roadside Assitance provider still had not shown up. Even though it was going on 9 PM, Marcus still wanted to go to the store. We didn't make it to the store. His heart started beating hard and fast, so I asked him if he wanted to go to the ER. He nodded and instead of turning into Fred Meyer's parking lot, I turned toward the hospital. When we got there, Marcus said he needed to get a drink, so he went to the fountain, while I explained to the clerk what was going on. When Marcus got back, he said he felt better. The clerk asked if he still wanted to be seen. I asked the clerk how busy it was back there and he said that it was kind of busy. So, Marcus decided he didn't want to stay. Then we went to Fred Meyer and I Marcus did not say anything more about a rapid heart beat. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Sharon, I also have a rapid heart beat. I take atenenol to bring it back down. I have to monitor the pulse rate and when it is high, I take a atenenol. Mine has been high since 2001. Mine goes up when i have the shocking electric pain. I have had it as high as 138. mostly in the low 100's. Guest guest
If that's your only choices, I think take your real concerns (the heart thing, etc) to Jack, and Dr D for all the " paperwork " Jack can't take care of... If I complained of heart weirdness, I'd expect SOMEBODY to at least take my pulse!!!! in WY Practical Blackwork Designs " You get a wonderful view from the point of no return... " http://practical-blackwork.blogspot.com http://practicalblackwork.com my doctor problems--what do you think? I have been seeing Dr. D, a family practice doctor, for more that 8 years. I have always liked him because he's funny and friendly and it's always like visiting with an old friend. But I was not happy with him when I saw him last week. Our small community doesn't have enough doctors and there is no neurologist (the last one was arrested;). So I don't have unlimited options. I do feel I need to do something though. Let me tell you what happened and you tell me what I should do.... new doc or give him another chance? I told his nurse my problems were a rapid heart beat and falling and losing my balance. Then he said " is there anything else? " I said well what about the rapid heartbeat? What do you all think? hugs Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
The nurse took my blood pressure but didn't take my pulse. I think I will see Jack and keep Dr. D as a "backup". I will follow through with my mammogram, especially since last time I had to have several before they cleared me. big hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product.
