Slacker,I think my point with all that wind below is that the problem you had is still there no matter which way you go. You still don't know what's doing what or if you've gotten to the root. But in your case, since you started biomed before meds and had done a lot and knew where you were and weren't seeing improvement, you already know what it's not. Whereas starting with meds first, you run into that problem much quicker. The problem I see with either method is that we'll likely never know if we've gotten to the root because the processes are soooo messed up that we'll always have a chicken/egg question.

Yes I would agree that it's always nice to help with the symptoms while trying to figure out the problem but it's not quite that easy with hyperactivity and focus. You can't possibly know if treating the yeast is what is helping the hyperactivity if you are giving something that will calm your kid down anyway. It's still the same issue - know what's doing what. With thyroid, it's quantifiable. You can test thyroid while taking it and trying to fix the underlying problem and get the body producing thyroid. You know if you are getting to the root by watching the thyroid numbers. It should show in the numbers.Hyperactivity and focus have no numbers.I've been dealing with ADD the entire journey and while biomed has done tons for autism, it's done nothing for the ADD. We are actually at that point of looking at meds. But I would never have known that nothing was working if I had started meds first. And this is coming from a person that *is* treating symptoms (piracetam, phos. chol., hydergine, vinpocetine and SAMe - our ADD cocktail) for a long time hoping to find the right combo while praying that my biomed would actually get to the root of the problem. It hasn't and neither has treating symptoms which is the only reason why I know I haven't. Our ADD cocktail has absolutely helped with cognition which is why we still use it. But like everything else, hasn't done a thing for ADD.Yes, it's hard to watch your child struggle with it. It's hard to be the parent struggling with how to help their kid. I *am* that mom. And every time homework reduces to yelling it sucks and I cry - *this* is when you know it's time for Rx ADHD meds. But choices have to be made in the beginning. There is no wrong choice but still, a choice needs to be made. If you go to meds first with ADHD, then that's pretty much where you'll stay until you stop and then go back to see what's doing what because otherwise, you'll simply never know if the reason your kid is calm is because you've fixed whatever issue there was or because of ritalin. At some point, you have to stop it to know. Why start it first if that's the case?

My Wife and I were very against stimulants and non stimulant to get the hyperactivity under control. However, even though we see a HUGE decrease in hyperactivity and basically all signs of autism why my son is on oral vancomycin, we still cannot determine wether the oral vanco is killing a bug or if it the "calming" of symptoms is caused by something secondary to the oral vano....i.e. similar to the reduced inflammation of the minocyclines.

The point I am getting to is this..... If you have a weak thyroid, would you try to find a cure for the reason that the thyroid is not doing its job? While that would be a good thing to do, we would still treat the thyroid with a synthetic or natural hormone replacement.

So our stand is this on adhd meds wether they be stimulants or non stimulants, give something to reduce the symptoms until the cause can be found. IMHO watching a child bounce off the walls isnt fun for the parents and not very much fun for the child either, I imagine them having a constant "panic attack" type symptoms going on in their head, and that would just be torture.

Our dan suggested Intuniv for him but I am skeptical as I was wondering is it a good idea to use something like intuniv while his symptoms could be a result of bacterial/fungal overgrowth? It is so frustrating to wait for the results and feel like I am not doing anything for him for all these weeks. I am scared of trying neuroprotek also as some kids get sleep disturbance and nightmares on it and my son is already waking up around 4 or 5 am despite melatonin. Any suggestions?
