Hey all....need some help...my son is chewing like crazy for a while now. We went through this before and a couple times it went away with extra Zinc or Parasite protocol. This time I knew the yeasties were back (cause I got lazy with his Lamisil) and after several large dumps AND zinc AND black Walnut & wormwood complex...he's still chewing. He's actually tearing threads in his sleeve cuffs to create holes. And he's doing this head thing where it looks like he's gently shaking his head "no". ADVICE???? HELP!!!! Guest guest
---interestingly enough, I have gotten 2 notices of strep from his preschool. BUT this chewing was going on long before that---not that I am ruling out PANDAS. He sees Dr. DeMio in Columbus who treats and is very familiar with PANDAS. I HATE HATE HATE that I would have to give him an antibiotic though....that makes me want to cry just thinking about it. > > The chewing and shaking his head (tic) SCREAMS PANDAS!!! Go to www.pandasnetwork.org for info. Guest guest
I always thought antibiotics were bad too but if you have PANDAS you need them. I agree Dr DeMio is good. Look at PANDAS network.org and see if you see any other signs.......aggression, clinginess, separation anxiety, anxiety, loss of handwriting, tics, OCD. If you have a kid with gut issues and you do not want oral antibiotics then you can consider bicillin shots to bypass the gut. Azithromycin is easier on the gut than augmentin. 5t sounds like PANDAS especially cause you have knwon exposure at school. PANDAS get worse and worse with each exposure......the symptoms even get worse and better......so he may haved chewed a bit before and is now chewing much more. Guest guest
What is so ironic about this situation is that I just " sent " my girlfriend to a bio-med doc because she consulted me about her son and I told her he has PANDAS. After the doc visit, the doc said the same thing. How could I not see it in my OWN child? His teacher has had trouble with him being compliant (and that is a newer thing) and his handwriting SUCKS even though before he went to preschool he was the BOMB at letters. I've had this feeling for a while that he's regressed a bit but not anything I can put my finger on....SIGH. > > > > The chewing and shaking his head (tic) SCREAMS PANDAS!!! Go to www.pandasnetwork.org for info. Guest guest
Pandas is a very new diagnosis and sooooo many of the symptoms and regressions are just chalked up to being autistic. Strep may have played a major part into my sons initial decent into autism since he had pneumonia (80% of pneumonia is caused by strep) and 2 weeks later I brought him in for a well baby visit and he got 2 vaccines. He immediately relapsed with pneumonia and then regressed into autism. i think the vaccines weaken the immune system and then the body just can't handle a strep infection normally and the body goes into attack mode producing too many antibodies that then attck the brain. Guest guest
, does pocketing food sound like PANDAS? I have a friend whose son pockets his food in his cheeks. It takes him hours to eat and he has been through years of protocols (Pfeiffer, DAN, NAET, neurofeedback, AIT, the list goes on - she is a local friend and is big on biomed and consults with me all the time before gossip about everything else over breakfast ). I keep telling mom to test for PANDAS and she hasn't gotten around to it. I've never heard of anyone else pocketing food so I'm having a great deal of difficulty helping her figure this out. ~ Antiviral Therapy 101~~ Make a biomed book ~~ gryffinstail.wordpress.com ~~ @Gryffins_Tail ~ The chewing and shaking his head (tic) SCREAMS PANDAS!!! Guest guest
Thanks and everyone. The more I piece things together with the PANDAS check list, it seems like this is what's going on. Last spring my son was at his best and made some great progress. He HAS lost handwriting skills. Used to be able to do every letter legibly and now his teacher is only having him do an " M " for his name and even that is a struggle. Hyperactive and obsessive about volume knobs....turns the computer volume up and down and up and down as well as the CD player. Eating in-edibles and chewing holes in clothes. Using the bed to bounce his head or body off of it. Compliance issues at school. I feel like he is just " far away " if that makes sense. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF PANDAS WILL CAUSE CHRONIC INFLAMMATION OF THE TONSILS? Cause my son's tonsils are exploding out of his throat but the ENT wouldn't do surgery b/c he doesn't snore or have sleep apnea. SOMETHING is harboring in those tonsils I SWEAR IT!! > > > > > > The chewing and shaking his head (tic) SCREAMS PANDAS!!! Go to www.pandasnetwork.org for info. Guest guest
Me, never heard it defined as pocketing but I have 2 w PANDAS who do this, one is NT and verbal and she says she just can't swallow it and that it grosses her. I just dice all their food for them or substitute smoothies when they are having flares because her less verbal brother has similar issues w food during flares and he'd just avoid eating and then get starving and scrounge for junk. The weird thing is that they are not tonsils kids, their tonsils never get swollen nor do they ever have red throats but w a PANDAS flare they get gaggy. Prior to her being able to explain this to us we just thought they were food averse, or in our daughters case having anorexic type symptoms. FWIW we really like these shakes made w Hemp milk or almond milk. Guest guest
Cheryl, I don't have any ideas, so I didn't write, but I wanted to let you know that I had a friend who said she used to hold food in her cheeks when she was little. She said it used to drive her Mom crazy. We were friends in high school. She was really skinny. Her Mom still had problems getting her to eat. Her Mom would cut her food up into bite size pieces like she was a little kid just to get her to eat. I actually do remember that even in high school, she used to take a bite of food, put it in her cheek and start talking and talking and not chew her food for quite some time. > > , does pocketing food sound like PANDAS? Guest guest
I didn't say anything, either, because I have no explanation for it - but as a child my sister did this, too. She hated to eat and wasn't permitted to leave the table until she emptied her plate so I think it was more of a control thing or better yet, a smart way to finally be able to get up from the table. She was born premature (3 lbs) and suffered from a pretty nasty case of scarlet fever early on so I don't know if it contributed to her lack of appetite. Odd thing is, she ended up chunking out and has struggled with being overweight ever since. As a side note (and sort of related), about 15 years ago, her husband went through a period of time where he was hardly eating because he couldn't swallow. It wasn't painful or anything. He said it made him feel as if he might choke or suffocate. No one had an explanation for him. She thought he was losing his marbles. I remember it would drive her batty because he would chew his food for sooooooooo long before he would swallow it. Eventually it passed.
