Guest guest
(Un) fortunately, I do not do the Christmas baking round here, though I may stick a finger or two in the batter I did help spread the filling on the chocolate gobs that made the other night. I don't believe those will be here until Christmas though.. not if Earl can find them. They weren't really intended for Christmas anyway.. more as a money saver for lunch packing anyway. I'm not sure what has in mind for Christmas goodies this year. And I'm not sure if I'm up to assisting in "all that" anyway. There will always be a pumpkin pie or two even if he accomplishes nothing else in the baking department. I do suspect that he will be making the evil Date/Nut bread for dinner though. Not sure how he can eat that, let alone make turkey salad with left over turkey and spread the good stuff on the nasty stuff.. and THEN actually put it in his mouth, chew & swallow!... LOL.. There are usually raisin filled cookies, peanut butter blossoms, and Russian tea cakes. This year I think I'll see if I can't get him to do something like Pumpkin gobs, rather than chocolate.. and I think I'll try to convince him that a Gob Cake will be much easier to accomplish rather than the individuals.. sure does sound easier.. mix the batter.. split between two cookie sheets, bake.. slap the filling on one sheet cake, flip the 2nd cake over top the first.. then cut up into squares. Then again, I've never really been all that keen on all the "goodies" at Christmas time.. but lay the "real" food in front of me.. and watch me go to town.. LOL.. Guest guest
You must have been terribly exhausted from that day, Sharon! I do bet you got a lot done however.I am going to make peanut butter cookies, the one with the hershey kiss in the center; gingerbread cookies and butter cookies. Things are tight around here, so I think cookies are going to be one item folks get...like maybe the bus driver, the mailman. The garbage men always get $ from us though. They do the recycling and the garbage. I would love the fudge recipe. Do you need a candy thermometer for it? I always heard fudge is a challenge to make.love, KateTo: Group <mserslife >Sent: Wed, December 15, 2010 12:41:53 PMSubject: my day yesterday and Christmas baking I went shopping with my daughter. Guest guest
I think it's great you bake, Dan. I, along with everyone else, am curious as to the spice in the spicy cookies! Are macaroons hard to make? My mouth is watering thinking about all these goodies. How are you feeling these days, and how is it going with the neighbors that were giving you a hard time having Whisper? I hope it has resolved and they aren't being creepy to you anymore. At least that's what I considered them to be!hugs, KateFrom: Dao Nguu To: mserslife Sent: Thu, December 16, 2010 12:19:49 PMSubject: RE: my day yesterday and Christmas baking I'm planning to bake cookies as gifts this year, too. Guest guest
I forgot that "gobs" are local to this area.. But sez to tell you...Gobs are good eating! but basically they are a "two gobs of cake cookie with white icing squeezed between".. The can be made out of pumpkin, vanilla, or any kind of cake you choose too.. (I'm not fond of this recipe for Chocolate, but a chocolate cake mix will work too) Gobs (Devil Dogs - mom's) Sift together, 4 cups flour, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup of cocoa Cream 1/2 cup shortening and then add 2 cups sugar, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup sour milk, Then add dry ingredients, add 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 cup boiling water. Drop by teaspoons on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10 minutes at 400 degrees. Cooked Frosting 3 Tablespoons flour, 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup crisco, 1 cup sugar, 1/2 teaspoons vanilla. Cook flour and milk together, stirring constantly till thick. Set aside and let cool. Mix in bowl the remaining ingredients. Add cooled flour mixture to this. Beat for 15 minutes.. (or beat the snot out of it, until it gets fluffy and smooth) You can also make a "Gob Cake" as well.. by splitting the cake batter between two cookie sheets.. flip the first half out onto something flat, or leave it on the cookie sheet, slater the cake with the icing, flip the 2nd half of the cookie sheet cake over top the first.. I think a Gob Cake would be much easier, and less time consuming to make.. and one can always cut that cake into squares and wrap them individual in plastic like you do the cookie shaped Gobs.. Hope this clears it up.. HUGS |)onna, who thinks she might get Pumpkin Gobs for Christmas instead of Chocolate.. Okay Donna....what are GOBS? lol Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. LOL.. Kinda funny how most people put on weight at the holidays from all the "goodies" and such.. Me.. I get fat eating the green bean casserole, ham and turkey.. And now.. I'm back down for another nap.. I sure hope the fatigue goes away soon... HUGS |)onna I went shopping with my daughter. We were gone all dang day! lol She picked me up a little after 9 a.m. and it was nearly 8 p.m. when she dropped me off at home. We went to the post office, three thrift stores, met my daughter-in-law at the chinese restaurant for lunch and then to Walmart. I was so incredibly tired. I couldn't have gone one more single place. Thank goodness for the electric scooters at Wally World:) I bought my baking supplies for my Christmas baking/goodie making. I know I will make fudge (my grandmother's old recipe), thumbprint cookies and chocolate chip cookies. I think I will also make penuche and white fudge. It all depends on how I feel each day. What about all of you? hugs Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Dan, I've done the very same thing, in the past, as well.. Only I'm not too hot on the baking front [i was horrendously teased one year, by the guys at "hunting camp" because of the cookies I sent with the old hubby -- they told me that had the Game Warden visited their campsite, they would have been fined for having "illegal ammunition" in camp!] So I did candy.. Not sure that it would be called "hardtack" candy or not.. but it involved a ton of sugar and a few other things.. boiled to the "hard crack" stage.. adding flavored oils & food coloring. I made a ton of the stuff.. then instead of the boxes, used colored cellophane paper and tied it all together with the curling ribbon (only then curling ribbon wasn't something you could buy, it had to be made by pulling one side of a pair of scissors down the ribbon, causing it to curl).. The candy was a hit.. as I'm positive your cookies will be as well. HUGS |)onna I'm planning to bake cookies as gifts this year, too. I've been practicing and have made oatmeal raisins, macaroons and my spicy chocolate chip cookies. I think friends appreciate them as they're homemade. I bought those holiday colored storage containers to store them. Dan U dao_nguu@...
